Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are highly susceptible to infestations with the ectoparasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis, the salmon louse. Infestations elicit an immune response in the fish, but the response does not lead to parasite clearance, nor does it protect against subsequent infestations. It is, however, not known why the immune response is not adequate, possibly because the local response directly underneath the louse has been poorly evaluated. The present study describes the transcriptomic response by RNA sequencing of skin at the site of copepodid attachment. Analysing differentially exp

Nematode parasites of the family Anisakidae infect definitive hosts, such as fish-eating birds and mammals, through primary intermediate hosts like copepods and secondary intermediate hosts like fishes. However, consumption of raw or undercooked fish can lead to nematode infection called anisakidosis in humans. We observed the presence of nematode infection in hillstream loaches of families Cobitidae and Nemacheilidae available for human consumption in the local markets in the northern parts of Western Ghats, India. Scanning electron micrograph and genetic identification employing mitochondria

Colonisation of crustacean zooplankton with ciliate epibionts is widespread in freshwater and marine environments. However, the ecology of such association are little studied as yet. The occurrence of ciliate epibionts on copepods and the preference towards this association with different life stages of Mesocyclops were studied from winter to spring. Relative susceptibility of zooplankton species was evaluated by analysing the epibiont colonies and zooids and relate this to the surface area of the host. The maximum epibiont infestation per unit body surface area was recorded on copepodites fol

Sea lice infestations represent one of the most significant challenges facing the salmon farming industry, giving rise to lost production, additional costs of treatment and potential negative interactions with wild stocks. At present, cleaner fish, which actively remove lice from salmon, are an effective, biological, long-term option which has been adopted by many countries. In Ireland, several key studies were conducted in the 1990s on the use of wild-caught wrasse (corkwing, goldsinny and rock cook) as cleaner fish in experimental and commercial scale trials. More recently, the National Univ

Host-parasite coevolution has rarely been observed in natural systems. Its study often relies on microparasitic infections introducing a potential bias in the estimation of the evolutionary change of host and parasite traits. Using biological invasions as a tool to study host-parasite coevolution in nature can overcome these biases. We demonstrate this with a cross-infection experiment in the invasive macroparasite Mytilicola intestinalis and its bivalve host, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. The invasion history of the parasite is well known for the southeastern North Sea and is characterised

Sea lice are significant parasites of marine and brackish farmed fishes. Freshwater bathing is a potential control option against numerous sea lice species, although has been viewed as futile against those that are capable of tolerating freshwater for extended periods. By comparing freshwater survival times across host-attached stages of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer), a key parasite in Atlantic salmon farming, we show the first attached (copepodid) stage undergoes 96-100% mortality after 1 h in freshwater, whereas later attached stages can tolerate up to 8 days. Thus, regular freshwater bat

In studies of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837), experimental design is complicated by a highly variable and unpredictable lice loss among common experimental tanks and a substantial rate of host transfer within tanks. When fish hosting L. salmonis are maintained in individual tanks, unspecific effects such as host transfer, louse predation by cohabitant hosts and agonistic host interactions are excluded. This study suggests that it is possible to maintain Atlantic salmon Salmo salar infected with L. salmonis in an array of small, single fish tanks and, by doing so, provi

This study examines the gut contents of 203 early juvenile Atlantic cod [17-101 mm ± 18.48 mm standard deviation (SD)] from the Western Baltic Sea (ICES Subdivision 22) collected between 2020 and 2022. According to the observed prey (proportion of pelagic, intermediate and benthic items) in the cod guts, settlement transition from a pelagic to a benthic lifestyle is estimated to take place at 46-87 mm cod total length (TL). Copepod species were the preferred prey item of pelagic feeding juvenile cod, dominated by the genus Acartia, which is also the most abundant copepod genus in the area. Wit

The vast majority of coastal organisms have been facing multigenerational scenarios of fluctuatingly high pCO2 and Cd pollution in their natural habitats. However, the adaptive capacity of these organisms to such combined stressors and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a multigenerational experiment (F1-F4) to investigate the adaptive responses of the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus to combined fluctuatingly high pCO2 and Cd exposure, along with the associated mechanisms. Our findings revealed that steady high pCO2 aggravated Cd multigenerationa

Monitoring sea lice infestation levels on populations of farmed and wild salmonids is critical to the development of evidence-based policy designed to mitigate the risk these ectoparasites represent to wild juvenile salmon and the on-going sustainability of salmon aquaculture. The data described relate to sea lice monitoring along the coast of British Columbia (BC), Canada from all areas where Atlantic salmon farms are present, spanning over two decades of observations from these farms and adjacent wild Pacific salmonid populations. Around 10,000 mean monthly sea lice estimates are included fr

The copepod Lernathropus kroyeri constitutes one of the major parasites for the Mediterranean aquaculture, infesting the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax causing thus disruptions of growth performance and occasionally mortalities. Despite the large spread and the high frequency of this parasite in mariculture farms of Eastern Mediterranean, L. kroyeri genetic profile from aquaculture as well as the pathophysiological response of D. labrax have not been studied so far. Keeping this in mind, in the present study we investigated the L. kroyeri infestation on D. labrax from two farms in Greece, exami

This study presents an Agent-Based Model (ABM) simulation to assess the impact of varying migration routes on sea lice (Caligus clemensi) infestation levels in juvenile wild sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia, Canada. This research highlights the importance of migratory routes in determining the extent of exposure to sea lice originating from nearby salmon farms. Three northward out-migration routes were modelled, each exposing the fish to different levels of infestation pressure based on proximity to salmon farms. The ABM incorporates spatially expl

Spillback effects of the parasitic salmon louse from fish farms to wild fish are a critical environmental concern for countries with wild salmon. The ectoparasitic louse causes significant physical and physiological damage to wild salmonids that probably have long-term impacts on individuals and population dynamics. However, empirical links between injuries and abundance of lice have not been established in the wild. This study establishes a strong association between dorsal fin injuries in wild sea trout (Salmo trutta) and infestation with salmon lice at a marine site in Norway. We further as

OBJECTIVE: We explore apparent infection of Salmincola californiensis arising during investigations involving this lernaeopodid copepod parasitic on Pacific salmon and trout Oncorhynchus spp.
METHODS: We noted occasional unusual coloration of adult female copepods collected from the wild. These females were bright blue and pink in contrast to the cream white coloration characteristic of the copepod. We also observed that similar color patterns developed under laboratory settings when copepod eggs were held for hatching. In paired egg cases, we found consistent hatching failure of blue and pin

There is growing contamination of copper (Cu) in the marine environment, particularly after the ban of organotin compounds and the increase of the use of Cu-based antifouling paints. Although there are increasing research interests in temperature-dependent chemical toxicity to aquatic organisms, most existing studies focused on acute impacts of chemicals at high concentrations. This study aimed to investigate the interacting effect of temperature and copper exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations on survival and development in the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus with a partial l

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is repeatedly exposed to and infected with ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) both in farms and in nature. However, this is not reflected in laboratory experiments where fish typically are infected only once. To investigate if a previous lice infection affects host response to subsequent infections, fish received 4 different experimental treatments; including 2 groups of fish that had previously been infected either with adult or infective salmon lice larvae (copepodids). Thereafter, fish in all treatment groups were infected with either a double

We used 4 years of publicly available data (2016-2019) on chemical usage at salmon sites with information on production, stocking, locations and environmental conditions to explore patterns of anti-sea lice treatments in a Canadian province. Results show that sequential chemical treatments are prevalent, emamectin benzoate (EMB) with azamethiphos being the most used combination with a decrease in ivermectin usage. Relatively high rates of usage of EMB per fish biomass may point to potential lice resistance patterns with information needed on mechanisms and local populations. Lower or no chemic

The aims of the present study were to describe the salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer, 1837) situation in an intensive salmon production area in mid-Norway and to consider implications of changing practices of how salmon lice infestation can be controlled. The results in this study suggest that there are steps that can be carried out to keep salmon lice under control even during years when the temperature facilitates a quick salmon lice development. The present work indicates that the use of cleaner fish can delay the time it takes adult female lice to reach 0.1 per salmon in the begi
