'Just be strong and keep going': the influence of Superwoman Schema on Black women's perceived expectations of coping with sexual pain.

Superwoman Schema, a conceptual framework that reflects Black women's ability to overcome gendered racism and stress, affects the way Black women choose to cope with health-related issues. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Black women perceive they should cope with sexual pain using the Superwoman Schema as an analytic and interpretative guide. Data were derived from participants who completed an individual interview on sexual pain and pleasure. Deductive thematic analysis was conducted. Results indicated whereas some Black women endorsed all five components of Superwoman Schema

Anxiety and coping strategies among dyslexics in Ethiopia.

Individuals with dyslexia have been shown to have an increased risk for developing internalizing problems. Various studies have revealed the powerful role that culture plays in determining the type of anxiety and coping strategies adopted by various groups of individuals. However, compared to the vast number of studies conducted in individualistic cultures, knowledge on collectivistic cultures with respect to this issue is still limited. This study examined anxiety and coping strategies of children with and without dyslexia in Ethiopia, where the majority of its cultural dimensions could be re

Problem-oriented coping and resilience among Fibromyalgia patients who live under security threats and have undergone a Fibrotherapy intervention program.

Our study examined the association between problem-focused coping and resilience among fibromyalgia (FM) patients who live under constant security threats. Resilience is a coping resource and detrimentally affects FM female patients (FMPs) to get up and cope with life. A cohort of 96 FMPs ages 19-75 was subjected to a Fibrotherapy intervention program in the Rehabilitation Help Center in Sderot (Ezra Le'Marpeh), Israel. We examined levels of problem-oriented coping and levels of resilience among the sample. In addition, we assessed whether there is a correlation between their resilience level

Enhanced coping and self-efficacy in caregivers of stem cell transplant recipients: Identifying mechanisms of a multimodal psychosocial intervention.

BackgroundIn a recent trial, a 6-session intervention (BMT-CARE) integrating medical information with cognitive-behavioral strategies improved quality of life (QOL), mood, coping skills, and self-efficacy for family/friend caregivers of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) recipients. This study examined whether improvements in coping and self-efficacy mediated the intervention effects on QOL and mood.MethodsFrom December 2017 to April 2019, 100 caregivers of HCT recipients were enrolled into a randomized clinical trial of BMT-CARE versus usual care. Caregivers completed self-report m

Behavioral interventions for alleviating psychotic symptoms.

Behavioral interventions can augment the effects of antipsychotic medication in alleviating hallucinations, delusions, and conceptual disorganization. Such interventions may be based on operant conditioning and reinforcement strategies and on training in coping skills. Reinforcement strategies have been used to decrease the rate of confused speech, delusional talk, and other psychotic behaviors, but they appear to have little effect on the subjective distress patients experience as a result of such symptoms. Strategies that teach patients skills for coping with psychotic symptoms include cogni

Momentary Associations Between Positive Coping and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Risk Among Individuals With Problematic Alcohol Use.

Background: The use of positive coping skills has demonstrated protective effects with regard to Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) engagement; however, cross-sectional evidence suggests that the presence of comorbid conditions, such as alcohol use disorders, may negate these benefits. Aims: The current study leverages ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the between-person and within-person relationships between positive coping strategies and NSSI risk among individuals with problematic alcohol use. Method: Undergraduate students (n = 56) completed a 21-day EMA protocol, in which they

Workplace Conflict Escalates Stress into Emotional Exhaustion in Teachers: The Significance of Functional Coping Strategies.

Evidence has documented several affective consequences of stress (e.g., burnout) in the workplace, particularly for teachers in the public sector, due to inadequacies within their work environments. However, limited research has examined the association between occupational stress and emotional exhaustion (EE) and the underlying mechanisms of this association in teachers. This study is an attempt to investigate whether workplace conflict mediates the well-established association between occupational stress and EE and if the mediating effect is moderated by teachers' coping skills. A cross-sect

Psychometric Properties of the Dutch Version of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Ways of Coping Checklist (DBT-WCCL).

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an extensively studied treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), with skills use being one of the hypothesized mechanisms of change. Research has previously been hindered by the absence of an appropriate tool to measure skills use, leading to the development of the DBT Ways of Coping Checklist (DBT-WCCL). The DBT-WCCL aims to assess DBT skills use (DSS) as well as dysfunctional coping (DCS), which can be divided into dysfunctional coping in general (DCS1) and blaming others (DCS2). This study evaluated the Dutch version of the DBT-WCCL by examin

Types of alcoholics, II. Application of an empirically derived typology to treatment matching.

Data from 79 male alcoholics who were randomly assigned to either coping skills training or interactional group psychotherapy were used to replicate a multidimensional, empirically derived typology and to evaluate the typology's usefulness in matching patients to treatment. Consistent with previous cluster analysis research, indicators of risk for alcoholism, alcohol dependence, drinking history, and psychopathological impairment distinguished alcoholics along two broad dimensions of vulnerability and severity, with one subtype (type B alcoholics) manifesting an earlier onset of problem drinki

A Combined Approach to Understanding Grief: Integration of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping With Bereavement (DPM).

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en

Therapeutic Writing Interventions for Adults With Chronic Pain: Experiences and Health Effects-A Systematic Review With a Narrative Synthesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is often associated with heightened psychological stress, which may exacerbate symptoms and impair functioning. Therapeutic writing has been proposed as a low-cost adjunctive strategy. This review evaluated the reported experiences and health effects of writing interventions in adults with non-malignant chronic pain. DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT: A systematic search of Web of Science, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Ovid and Scopus (1999-November 5, 2025) identified studies examining health effects and experiences of therapeutic writing. Methodological quality was

Catastrophizing versus positive reappraisal: The cognitive depletion effects of workplace incivility.

As a low-intensity stressor with ambiguous intent, workplace incivility has sparked debate regarding its real impact. A key unresolved question is how daily incivility elicits specific cognitive processes that lead to sustained exhaustion over time. This study examines cognitive depletion-a critical state linked to impaired job performance-by investigating its relationship with workplace incivility and the mediating roles of catastrophizing and positive reappraisal across different time frames. Using a hybrid methodological approach that combines a five-day daily diary study with a three-wave

Strengths, Challenges, and Experiences of Neurodivergent Faculty in Academia.

Recently, there has been increasing attention to neurodiversity in academia, with focus on supporting neurodivergent (ND) students. The experiences of ND faculty, however, are often overlooked in neurodiversity research, leading to a lack of support. In this study, we quantitatively and qualitatively surveyed self-identified ND faculty (n = 66) about their experiences in academia to learn more about their perceived strengths and weaknesses, coping strategies, and advice for other ND academics and neurotypical (NT) peers. Overall, 93.3%, 73.3%, 27.1% of our participants met or exceeded clinical

Examining distinctions between polyregulation and single-strategy emotion regulation.

Polyregulation refers to the simultaneous or sequential use of emotion regulation (ER) approaches. Although research has documented that polyregulation is common, more research is needed to clarify when it occurs and how it relates to ER processes. A total of 179 adults reported on a recent event 5×/day for 14 days between 2022 and 2023. For each event, participants reported on momentary contextual factors, including positive affect and negative affect, social context (presence of others), and event appraisals (pleasantness, importance), along with whether they engaged in ER. When ER was repor

Managing radiological technologists' impatience: testing the effectiveness of a group work intervention.

Impatience is closely associated with stress, anxiety, and tension, all of which can adversely affect task performance and decision-making. Previous research analyzing incident reports from radiological technologists (RTs) has shown that impatience contributes to incidents regardless of years of experience. Based on these findings, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a group-work intervention designed to regulate feelings of impatience. A group-work session titled "Coping with Impatience and Its Effects" was conducted with 16 RTs at Kyoto University Hospital (mean experience: 5.2

Understanding Toxic Behavior in Game-Mediated Social Interaction: A Systematic Review and Future Directions.

As multiplayer online games increasingly evolve into prominent social platforms, toxic behavior (TB), a range of negative player interactions, has attracted growing scholarly attention. However, existing research remains fragmented, lacking conceptual clarity and systematic synthesis. Thus, this study conducted a systematic review of 48 empirical studies on TB, examining its definitions, classifications and measurements, correlates, perceived consequences, and coping strategies. This study identified four main approaches to defining TB, including umbrella, subconcept, impact-based approach, an

Identifying coping strategies that regulate negative climate emotions without reducing pro-environmental behavior.

Negative climate emotions may represent both a psychological burden and a motivator for pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Identifying coping strategies that reduce distress without undermining engagement is therefore crucial. In this preregistered online experiment (N = 313), negative climate emotions were induced via film and participants were randomized to meaning-focused coping (MFC), emotional acceptance, or cognitive distraction. Negative and positive affect were assessed before and after coping, and PEB was measured using a fully incentivized behavioral task involving real time and effor

Burnout and Coping Strategies Among Paediatric Oncologists: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric oncologists routinely face emotionally demanding situations, including prolonged exposure to child suffering, ethically complex decision-making, and high clinical workloads. These stressors contribute to burnout, moral distress, and psychological strain, yet their lived experiences remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise existing evidence on the psychological challenges experienced by paediatric oncologists, with a focus on burnout, emotional exhaustion, moral distress, and coping strategies. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Instit
