Corneal Optical Densitometry in the Evaluation of 2-Year Graft Function Following Endothelial Keratoplasty.

This study aimed to assess clinical application of the Scheimpflug corneal tomography for objective evaluation of corneal optical density in eyes undergoing Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK). In this prospective study, 39 pseudophakic eyes with bullous keratopathy were enrolled. All eyes underwent primary DSEK. Ophthalmic examination included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, biomicroscopy, Scheimpflug tomography, pachymetry, and endothelial cell count. All measurements were taken preoperatively and within a 2-year follow-up period. Gradual BCVA improvement wa

Predicting Keratoconus Progression and Need for Corneal Crosslinking Using Deep Learning.

We aimed to predict keratoconus progression and the need for corneal crosslinking (CXL) using deep learning (DL). Two hundred and seventy-four corneal tomography images taken by Pentacam HR® (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) of 158 keratoconus patients were examined. All patients were examined two times or more, and divided into two groups; the progression group and the non-progression group. An axial map of the frontal corneal plane, a pachymetry map, and a combination of these two maps at the initial examination were assessed according to the patients' age. Training with a convolutional neural netw

Laser Vision Correction with Q Factor Modification for Keratoconus Management.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of corneal laser ablation with Q factor modification for vision correction in patients with progressive keratoconus. METHODS: In this prospective study, 50 eyes of 50 patients were divided into two groups based on Q factor (>-1 in Group I and ≤-1 in Group II). All patients underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination including uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), subjective acceptance and corneal topography using the Pentacam. The topolyzer was used to measure the corneal asphericity (Q). Ablation was performed ba

Millimeter wave absorption in the nonhuman primate eye at 35 GHz and 94 GHz.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate anterior segment bioeffects of pulsed 35 GHz and 94 GHz microwave exposure in the nonhuman primate eye. Five juvenile rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) underwent baseline anterior segment ocular assessment consisting of slit lamp examination, corneal topography, specular microscopy, and pachymetry. These studies were repeated after exposure of one eye to pulsed 35 GHz or 94 GHz microwaves at varied fluences, with the other eye serving as a control. The mean fluence required to produce a threshold corneal lesion (faint epithelial edema and fluorescein sta

Reduced quality of life in corneal dystrophy - a prospective case control study.

BACKGROUND: Corneal dystrophies are a group of rare eye diseases that can cause visual impairment and affect social well-being, independence, and active participation in society. This study presents data on the impact of corneal dystrophies on quality of life compared to a healthy control group. METHODS: This prospective case control study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Ulm in Germany. The study included 45 patients with corneal dystrophy (excluding Fuchs endothelial dystrophy) between 2021 and 2024, and a control group of 45 healthy patients. All

Do we overestimate the endothelial cell "loss" after descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty?

PURPOSE: To evaluate how corneal deturgescence after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) influences the posterior corneal surface area and the endothelial cell density (ECD) measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mathematical model was formulated to estimate the increase in posterior corneal surface area associated with postoperative corneal deturgescence and its effect on ECD measurements. Important input parameter for the model was the change in pachymetry from 1 h to 6 months after surgery. To this end, the clinical records of 25 patients (25 eyes) who underwent DMEK were rev

Visual rehabilitation in keratoconus by altering corneal shape using the corneal crosslinking pen: initial results.

BACKGROUND: A Phase I/II trial to evaluate the initial safety and performance of a novel corneal crosslinking device, the Corneal Crosslinking Pen in keratoconus patients. This was a prospective exploratory study with 12 months of follow up. METHODS: Twenty-one eyes of 21 patients aged 14-27 years and diagnosed with progressive keratoconus were enrolled and treated unilaterally. Corneal crosslinking (CXL) following an accelerated epi-off protocol with riboflavin was done using the Corneal Crosslinking Pen. Effectiveness endpoints included changes in astigmatism, maximum keratometry (KMax), an

Pterygia with deep corneal changes.

PURPOSE: To report a series of patients with pterygia associated with deep corneal marks at the level of the endothelium and Descemet membrane previously unreported. METHODS: Clinical presentations of 7 patients (11 eyes) with pterygia and underlying deep corneal changes were reviewed for age, duration of pterygium, size of pterygium, and location of pterygium. Slit-lamp photos were obtained. Specular microscopy was performed on both eyes of 6 of these patients to evaluate the central endothelium and measure central corneal pachymetry. RESULTS: All patients were elderly (mean age 75 years, r

[Pachymetry with a video slit lamp].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Presentation and application of a method for pachymetry with the slit lamp based on the concept of a defined optical section. METHODS AND PATIENTS: The visible width of an optical section on slit lamp examination with a 45° angle between the slit beam and the central corneal surface was determined in 103 eyes (68 with glaucoma and 35 in patients with keratoconus). The measurements were compared to the pachymetric values previously determined elsewhere for these eyes in order to establish a proportionality factor for calculation of corneal thickness from slit lamp mea

Keratoconus diagnosis with optical coherence tomography pachymetry mapping.

OBJECTIVE: To detect abnormal corneal thinning in keratoconus using pachymetry maps measured by high-speed anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT). DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-seven keratoconic eyes from 21 subjects and 36 eyes from 18 normal subjects. METHODS: The OCT system operated at a 1.3 microm wavelength with a scan rate of 2000 axial scans per second. A pachymetry scan pattern (8 radials, 128 axial scans each; 10 mm diameter) centered at the corneal vertex was used to map the corneal thickness. The pachymetry map was divided into zon

Changes of corneal biomechanics with keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To perform advanced analysis of the corneal deformation response to air pressure in keratoconics compared with age- and sex-matched controls. METHODS: The ocular response analyzer was used to measure the air pressure-corneal deformation relationship of 37 patients with keratoconus and 37 age (mean 36 ± 10 years)- and sex-matched controls with healthy corneas. Four repeat air pressure-corneal deformation profiles were averaged, and 42 separate parameters relating to each element of the profiles were extracted. Corneal topography and pachymetry were performed with the Orbscan II. The s

[Topographical pachymetry and pachymetric topography in circumscribed posterior keratoconus].

CASE REPORT: A 29 year-old male patient presenting circumscribed posterior keratoconus in the left eye was studied. After ocular examination, corneal morphometry was studied by a computer-assisted topographic analysis and topographical ultrasonic pachymetry. Corneal thickness profile was represented by a colour-coded map from twenty-five measured points (pachymetric topography). DISCUSSION: Slit lamp biomicroscopy shows a paracentral-localized area of moderate corneal thinning with a nasal-superior concavity on posterior corneal surface. Topographical pachometry and pachometric topography all
