PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of using corneal stromal lenticules (CSLs) obtained during refractive surgery Refractive Lenticule Extraction (ReLEx) with the Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) procedure for the treatment of corneal ulcers.

CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 29 year-old man who came to the Emergency Department due to pain in the right eye. There was demonstrated a complete corneal de-epithelialisation. There was no clinical improvement after appropriate treatment, which was complicated by migraine and vomiting. The computerized tomography (CT) scan showed images suggestive of cerebral toxoplasmosis. After the complete tarsorrhaphy a restitution ad integrum was observed.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation in the management of treated infectious corneal ulcer in which inflammatory reactions were responsible for corneal damage.
METHOD: A prospective study of 21 consecutive eyes (21 patients) was performed. Sufficient antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral agents were applied to eradicate causative organisms before permanent or temporary amniotic membrane transplantation, or a combination of the two in few patients. PURPOSE: To report a case of conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia presenting as corneal ulcer.
METHOD: Case report of a 28-year-old man who presented with sudden onset of pain, redness, and watering in the right eye. Examination of right cornea revealed deep stromal infiltrate inferonasally. Adjacent to the infiltrate and straddling the inferonasal limbus, a reddish well-defined sessible lesion with prominent blood vessels was seen. After corneal scraping for microbiological evaluation, the patient was treated with frequent instillation of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride 0.3% eyedrops.

The paper presents a case of spontaneous perforation of the cornea happened on an eye with neglected relapsed herpetic keratitis. It is discussed the role of corticotherapy, local toxicity of used antiviral drugs and neurotrophic troulles in the territory of the ophthalmic nerve, as being factors which could have hurried up the evolution towards the perforation. A Pseudomonas-caused corneal ulcer developed in a 44-year-old man with severe facial and upper torso thermal burns while in the hospital burn unit. The infecting strain was resistant to most antibiotics, including gentamicin sulfate and tobramycin sulfate. Treatment with topical and parenteral amikacin sulfate resulted in rapid healing. To our knowledge, there have been no reports of the use of amikacin for corneal ulcer. BACKGROUND: Patients frequently present to general practitioners (GPs) with discomfort and a red eye due to corneal ulceration, defined as a defect in the corneal epithelium and underlying stroma. A myriad of conditions may lead to corneal ulcers, and prompt diagnosis and adequate management is needed to prevent visual morbidity.
