Electrochemical corrosion accompanies dendrite growth in solid electrolytes.

Charging rates, cycling performance and safety of solid-state batteries using metal negative electrodes are often limited by dendrites1-3, the growth of which depends on coupling between electrochemical and mechanical driving forces. Previously, it has been assumed that dendrites propagate when plating-induced stresses reach the fracture stress of the solid electrolyte. Here we show that dendrites can propagate at far lower stresses. Using operando birefringence microscopy4, we directly measure stresses around growing dendrites in garnet Li6.6La3Zr1.6Ta0.4O12, a highly stable solid electrolyte

Corrosion Behavior of Surface-Treated Metallic Implant Materials.

Corrosion of taper connections in total hip arthroplasty remains of concern, as particles and ions generated by corrosive processes can cause clinical problems such as periprosthetic osteolysis or adverse reaction to metallic debris. Mechanical surface treatments that introduce compressive residual stresses (RSs) in metallic materials can lead to a better performance in terms of fretting and fatigue and may lower the susceptibility to corrosion. The study investigates the impact of mechanical surface treatments on the corrosion behavior of metallic biomaterials. Compressive RSs were introduced

Revisiting the concept of inflammatory cell-induced corrosion.

A peculiar type of surface pitting damage to revised joint replacement implant metal surfaces has been attributed to cellular activity and termed "inflammatory cell-induced-corrosion." We visually examined 1859 explanted metal implants to document the presence and extent of these features. The data was used to examine correlations between these features and the implant material, and modularity as well as clinical variables. The features were observed in approximately 77% of modular and 30% of monobloc hip implants in a variety of metals, as well as to some degree in various other implants. To

Experimental and Statistical Approach to Detect the Corrosion Rate and Influencing Profiles for Enhancing Corrosion Rate of High-Voltage Insulator Materials.

The influence of temperature, pollutant, and pH on the local corrosion rate of insulators installed in industrial, marine, and rural installation sites is investigated based on experimental and statistical investigations. The tensile load test confirms that corroded insulator specimens collected from industrial sites aged more than 10 years represent a minimum fracture load, 19,892 lbs. It was further observed that more than 91.24% and 64.62% corroded insulator specimens suffered from shell break and pin detachment, respectively. The microstructural and XRF analysis reveal that insulator speci

Adsorption and Corrosion Inhibition Evaluation of Agro-Industrial Waste-Derived Sustainable Carbon Dots for Corrosion Protection of Q235 Steel in 5% HCl.

Nitrogen and sulfur codoped carbon dots (SB-CDs) were developed from sugar cane bagasse, an agro-industrial waste, and evaluated as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for Q235B steel in HCl solution. The surface coverage of the adsorbed SB-CDs is strongly influenced by immersion time (6 and 72 h, both in static and dynamic conditions) and inhibitor concentration (20-200 mg/L). Maximum and uniform coverage is achieved with 150 mg/L SB-CDs. At this concentration, SB-CDs demonstrated a high inhibition efficiency of 96% after 6 h of immersion, maintaining effectiveness at 94 and 92% under static

Post Wire-Bonding Corrosion Prevention Strategies to Mitigate Chloride- and Bromide-Induced Corrosion Failures in Cu- and PCC-Based Wire-Bonded Packages.

To ensure the highest safety standards in modern automobiles, the industry is constantly adopting zero-defect frameworks, such as AEC-Q100, which aims for defective-parts-per-billion (DPPB) or grade-0 level reliability standards in automotive integrated-circuit (IC) packages. Most contemporary wire-bonded packages use either pure copper (Cu) or palladium (Pd)-coated copper (PCC) wires bonded to aluminum (Al) bond pads as interconnections. This choice is made due to their lower cost and superior electrical and mechanical performance, compared to traditional gold wire-based devices. However, the

Investigating Flow-Induced Corrosion of Magnesium in Ophthalmological Milieu.

Although the impact of local fluid dynamics in the biodegradation of magnesium is well known, currently no studies in the literature address the degradation effects of ocular vitreous on bioresorbable devices made of magnesium, which could be developed as drug delivery carriers. The aim of this study was to investigate the flow-induced corrosion mechanism of magnesium in an ophthalmological environment for future applications in ophthalmic drug delivery. To achieve this, experimental and computational methods were combined. Specifically, a CFD model was employed to design experimental conditio

Evaluation of a New In Chemico Skin Corrosion Test.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a novel macromolecular test method for the identification of dermal corrosives. The simple in chemico test procedure involves allowing the material to be tested to interact with a skin biomarker for corrosivity and then adding a detection reagent. The corrosivity of the test substance is predicted based on the measured macromolecular damage, which results in reduced optical density of the detection reagent as compared with controls. This study aims to determine if such an extremely simple, cell-free test method can accurately identify dermal corrosives.

Accelerated Ballast Tank Corrosion Simulation Protocols: A Critical Assessment.

In the realm of accelerated testing within controlled laboratory settings, the fidelity of the service environment assumes paramount importance. It is imperative to replicate real-world conditions while compressing the testing duration to facilitate early evaluations, thereby optimizing time and cost efficiencies. Traditional immersion protocols, reflective solely of full ballast tank conditions, inadequately expedite the corrosion process representative of an average ballast tank environment. Through the integration of immersion with fog/dry conditions, aligning the test protocol more closely

Multilayered LDH/Microcapsule Smart Epoxy Coating for Corrosion Protection.

A multilayered smart epoxy coating for corrosion prevention of carbon steel was developed and characterized. Toward this direction, as a first step, zinc-aluminum nitrate-layered double hydroxide (Zn/Al LDH) was synthesized using the hydrothermal crystallization technique and then loaded with dodecylamine (DOD), which was used as an inhibitor (pH-sensitive). Similarly, the synthesis of the urea-formaldehyde microcapsules (UFMCs) has been carried out using the in-situ polymerization method, and then the microcapsules (LAUFCs) were encapsulated with linalyl acetate (LA) as a self-healing agent.

[Experimental processing of corrosion casts of large animal organs].

INTRODUCTION: Corrosion casts (CCs) are used for the visualization and assessment of hollow structures. CCs with filled capillaries enable (with the help of imaging methods) to obtain data for mathematical organ perfusion modelling. As the processing is more difficult in case of organs with greater volume of the vasculature, mainly organs from small animals have been cast up to now. The aim of this study was to optimize the protocol of corrosion casting of different organs of pig. Porcine organs are relatively easily accessible and frequently used in experimental medicine. METHOD: Organs from

Fluoride induced corrosion affecting Titanium brackets: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: A number of studies have been published regarding the behaviour of titanium inside the oral cavity or in a similar environment. Very often the results converge although they may on occasion be divergent. There appears to be a strong need for a systematic review because of this disparity, with a view to designing an experimental working method. Our study will attempt to analyse the various aspects of this problem. It will therefore focus on fluoride and its impact, as well as on the role it plays in corroding titanium orthodontic brackets (Ti) according to the synthesis and critic

Vascular corrosion casting of normal and pre-eclamptic placentas.

Pre-eclampsia is an important cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality that is associated with decreased placental perfusion. In the present study, vascular corrosion casting was used to investigate the differences in structural changes of the fetoplacental vasculature between normal and pre-eclamptic placentas. An improved epoxy resin vascular casting technique was used in the present study. Casting media were infused into 40 normal and 40 pre-eclamptic placentas through umbilical arteries and veins in order to construct three dimensional fetoplacental vasculatures. The number of b

A high-specific-strength and corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy.

Ultra-lightweight alloys with high strength, ductility and corrosion resistance are desirable for applications in the automotive, aerospace, defence, biomedical, sporting and electronic goods sectors. Ductility and corrosion resistance are generally inversely correlated with strength, making it difficult to optimize all three simultaneously. Here we design an ultralow density (1.4 g cm(-3)) Mg-Li-based alloy that is strong, ductile, and more corrosion resistant than Mg-based alloys reported so far. The alloy is Li-rich and a solute nanostructure within a body-centred cubic matrix is achieved b

Nitinol: Tubing versus sputtered film - microcleanliness and corrosion behavior.

Corrosion behavior and microcleanliness of medical-device grade Nitinol tubing (Nix Ti1- x , x = 0.51; outer diameter 7 mm, wall thickness 0.5 mm), drawn from various ingot qualities, are compared to the characteristics of sputtered Nitinol film material (Nix Ti1- x , x = 0.51; thickness 50 µm). Electropolished tubing half-shell samples are tested versus as-received sputtered film samples. Inclusion size distributions are assessed using quantitative metallography and corrosion behavior is investigated by potentiodynamic polarization testing in phosphate-buffered saline at body temperature.
