A combination of ellagic acid and tetracycline inhibits biofilm formation and the associated virulence of Propionibacterium acnes in vitro and in vivo.

Propionibacterium acnes is an opportunistic pathogen which has become notorious owing to its ability to form a recalcitrant biofilm and to develop drug resistance. The current study aimed to develop anti-biofilm treatments against clinical isolates of P. acnes under in vitro and in vivo conditions. A combination of ellagic acid and tetracycline (ETC; 250 μg ml(-1) + 0.312 μg ml(-1)) was determined to effectively inhibit biofilm formation by P. acnes (80-91%) without affecting its growth, therefore potentially limiting the possibility of the bacterium attaining resistance. In addition, ETC redu

A Self-Deliverable H2O2-Responsive Tocopherol Dimer for Enhanced Antioxidant and Liposomal Delivery.

Oxidative stress induced by excessive hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a critical pathological factor in skin aging, inflammatory disorders, and photodamage. While tocopherol (TCP) is a gold-standard antioxidant in cosmetics, its potential in H2O2-responsive systems remains underexplored. In this study, we report the design and characterization of ditocopheryl peroxalate (TOT), a novel tocopherol dimer linked via a H2O2-cleavable peroxalate linkage. TOT remains chemically stable under physiological conditions but undergoes selective chemiluminescence-like degradation upon exposure to H2O2, simultan

Tyrosinase inhibition by natural stilbenoid glycosides: Critical role of the vinyl moiety in piceid for melanogenesis suppression.

Skin hyperpigmentation due to UV-induced tyrosinase activation and melanin overproduction is an ongoing challenge in cosmetic and dermatological applications. While resveratrol analogues show anti-melanogenic potential, the structure-activity relationships of their glycosylated derivatives remain underexplored. Here, we investigate how the vinyl moiety in the food-derived stilbenoid glycoside piceid (resveratrol-3-O-β-glucoside) affects tyrosinase inhibition. We reduced the vinyl moiety to yield dihydropiceid by catalytic hydrogenation and systematically assessed both compounds for anti-melano
