The microlesion concept in HZE particle dosimetry.

High energy, high-Z (HZE) particles are present in high-altitude and high-inclination satellite orbits. Most of the HZE dose above LET = 200 keV/micrometer is due to Fe nuclei. Individual HZE particles can damage several cells adjacent to one another along the particle track in tissue. The outcome has been described as a "microlesion" by D. Grahn. The present study attempts to define conditions for microlesions in specific tissues, to seek biological evidence that microlesions are produced, and to evaluate the microlesion as a potentially useful unit of dose in assessing hazards to spaceworker

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 746: Air Travel During Pregnancy.

In the absence of obstetric or medical complications, occasional air travel is safe for pregnant women. Pregnant women can fly safely, observing the same precautions for air travel as the general population. Because severe air turbulence cannot be predicted and the subsequent risk for trauma is significant should this occur, pregnant women should be instructed to use their seat belts continuously while seated. Despite a lack of evidence associating lower extremity edema and venous thrombotic events with air travel during pregnancy, certain preventive measures can be used to minimize these risk

Flying microbes-survival in the extreme conditions of the stratosphere during a stratospheric balloon flight experiment.

UNLABELLED: Earth's stratosphere is characterized by hypobaric conditions, low temperatures, and high intensities of ultraviolet (UV) and cosmic radiation as well as low water and nutrient availability. While it is not considered a permanent habitat for microorganisms, they can be transported to the stratosphere by storms, volcanic action, or human activity. The impact of those extreme conditions on microorganisms and their survival were tested by sending a sample gondola to the stratosphere. The sample gondola was built to allow exposure of Bacillus subtilis endospores at different angles to

Synergistic effect of high charge and energy particle radiation and chronological age on biomarkers of oxidative stress and tissue degeneration: a ground-based study using the vertebrate laboratory model organism Oryzias latipes.

High charge and energy (HZE) particles are a main hazard of the space radiation environment. Uncertainty regarding their health effects is a limiting factor in the design of human exploration-class space missions, that is, missions beyond low earth orbit. Previous work has shown that HZE exposure increases cancer risk and elicits other aging-like phenomena in animal models. Here, we investigate how a single exposure to HZE particle radiation, early in life, influences the subsequent age-dependent evolution of oxidative stress and appearance of degenerative tissue changes. Embryos of the labora

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Rays Modify Mitochondrial Metabolism in Osteoclasts, Increase Osteoclastogenesis and Cause Trabecular Bone Loss in Mice.

Space is a high-stress environment. One major risk factor for the astronauts when they leave the Earth's magnetic field is exposure to ionizing radiation from galactic cosmic rays (GCR). Several adverse changes occur in mammalian anatomy and physiology in space, including bone loss. In this study, we assessed the effects of simplified GCR exposure on skeletal health in vivo. Three months following exposure to 0.5 Gy total body simulated GCR, blood, bone marrow and tissue were collected from 9 months old male mice. The key findings from our cell and tissue analysis are (1) GCR induced femoral t

Assessing Nonlinearity in Harderian Gland Tumor Induction Using Three Combined HZE-irradiated Mouse Datasets.

Recently reported studies considering nonlinearity in the effects of low-dose space radiation have assumed a nontargeted mechanism. To date, few analyses have been performed to assess whether a nontargeted term is supported by the available data. The Harderian gland data from Alpen et al. (published in 1993 and 1994), and Chang et al. (2016) provide the most diversity of ions and energies in a tumor induction model, including multiple high-energy and charge particles. These data can be used to investigate various nonlinearity assumptions against a linear model, including nontargeted effects in

The first four ground-level enhancements in the 1940s: investigation, digitization and analysis of forgotten data.

Intense solar eruptions occasionally accelerate solar energetic particles (SEPs) and trigger ground-level enhancements (GLEs). Among the 77 known GLEs, the first four #1- 4, in the 1940s, took place before the advent of the standard neutron monitors (NMs) and were missing from the International GLE Database (IGLED). This data gap challenged their quantification. To overcome this difficulty, we systematically gathered, digitized and quantified contemporaneous cosmic-ray records pertaining to these GLEs. These data allow us to reconstruct the GLE temporal evolution with 1-15 minute resolutions a

Galactic Cosmic Irradiation Alters Acute and Delayed Species-Typical Behavior in Male and Female Mice.

Exposure to space galactic cosmic radiation is a principal consideration for deep space missions. While the effects of space irradiation on the nervous system are not fully known, studies in animal models have shown that exposure to ionizing radiation can cause neuronal damage and lead to downstream cognitive and behavioral deficits. Cognitive health implications put humans and missions at risk, and with the upcoming Artemis missions in which female crew will play a major role, advance critical analysis of the neurological and performance responses of male and female rodents to space radiation

Increased and varied radiation during the Sun's encounters with cold clouds in the last 10 million years.

Recent research raises the possibility that 2-3 and 6-7 million years ago, the Sun encountered massive clouds that shrank the heliosphere -the solar cocoon protecting our solar system- exposing Earth to its interstellar environment, in agreement with geological evidence from 60Fe and 244Pu isotopes. Here we show that during such encounters Earth was exposed to increased radiation in the form of high-energy particles. During periods of Earth's immersion in the heliosphere, it received particle radiation that we name Heliospheric Energetic Particles (HEPs). The intensity of < 10 MeV protons was

Exposure to a Single Dose of Space-Relevant Proton Radiation Alters the Intestinal One-Carbon Metabolism Pathway and Microbiome in Mice.

Space radiation, primarily originating from galactic cosmic rays, is mainly composed of protons. Given NASA's plans for manned lunar and Mars missions, it is critical to assess the risk of proton radiation in disrupting tissue homeostasis, including in the intestine, which is a highly radiosensitive organ that harbors trillions of bacteria on the luminal surface. One-carbon metabolism encompasses the folate and methionine cycle and plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue homeostasis by regulating methylation, reductive metabolism, and nucleotide synthesis. However, the effects of proton rad

Synthetic torpor protects rats from exposure to accelerated heavy ions.

Hibernation or torpor is considered a possible tool to protect astronauts from the deleterious effects of space radiation that contains high-energy heavy ions. We induced synthetic torpor in rats by injecting adenosine 5'-monophosphate monohydrate (5'-AMP) i.p. and maintaining in low ambient temperature room (+ 16 °C) for 6 h immediately after total body irradiation (TBI) with accelerated carbon ions (C-ions). The 5'-AMP treatment in combination with low ambient temperature reduced skin temperature and increased survival following 8 Gy C-ion irradiation compared to saline-injected animals. Ana

Cardiovascular and central nervous system risk in astronauts: the minipig as a physiologically relevant radiation model.

Humans will return to the Moon and travel to deep space on their journey to Mars. Space exploration presents significant hazards to human health, including exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPEs). Space radiation-induced carcinogenesis is considered a primary risk to astronaut health. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction have emerged as significant health risks for astronauts. Small animal models, particularly rodents, have provided valuable information regarding IR effects on the cardiov

A priming dose of protons alters the early cardiac cellular and molecular response to (56)Fe irradiation.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence suggests that the heart may be injured by ionizing radiation at lower doses than was previously thought. This raises concerns about the cardiovascular risks from exposure to radiation during space travel. Since space travel is associated with exposure to both protons from solar particle events and heavy ions from galactic cosmic rays, we here examined the effects of a "priming" dose of protons on the cardiac cellular and molecular response to a "challenge" dose of (56)Fe in a mouse model. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice at 10 weeks of age were exposed to sham-irradiation,

Radioactive Games? Radiation Hazard Assessment of the Tokyo Olympic Summer Games.

We conducted a comprehensive radiation hazard assessment of the Tokyo Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020, postponed to 2021). Our combined experimental and literature study focused on both external and internal exposure to ionizing radiation for athletes and visitors of the Games. The effective dose for a visit of 2 weeks ranges from 57 to 310 μSv (including flight dose). The main contributors to the dose are cosmic radiation during the flights (approximately 10-81%), inhalation of natural radon (approximately 9-47%), and external exposure (approximately 8-42%). In this complex exposure, anthropogenic

Space Radiation and Bone Loss.

Exposure to ionizing radiation may negatively impact skeletal integrity during extended spaceflight missions to the moon, Mars, or near-Earth asteroids. However, our understanding of the effects of radiation on bone is limited when compared to the effects of weightlessness. In addition to microgravity, astronauts will be exposed to space radiation from solar and cosmic sources. Historically, radiation exposure has been shown to damage both osteoblast precursors and local vasculature within the irradiated volume. The resulting suppression of bone formation and a general state of low bone-turnov

The brain-eye-liver axis during spaceflight: implications of hepatic dysfunction in spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome.

Spaceflight presents unique physiological challenges, with prolonged exposure to microgravity, cosmic radiation, and psychological stress impacting astronaut health. Hepatic dysfunction may contribute to the pathogenesis of astronaut diseases, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), one of the largest physiologic barriers to future spaceflight. This paper explores the interconnected effects of spaceflight on the liver, particularly focusing on alterations in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, liver injury, inflammation, and compromised biotransformation processes. Degradation of cyanobacterial biosignatures by ionizing radiation.

Primitive photosynthetic microorganisms, either dormant or dead, may remain today on the martian surface, akin to terrestrial cyanobacteria surviving endolithically in martian analog sites on Earth such as the Antarctic Dry Valleys and the Atacama Desert. Potential markers of martian photoautotrophs include the red edge of chlorophyll reflectance spectra or fluorescence emission from systems of light-harvesting pigments. Such biosignatures, however, would be modified and degraded by long-term exposure to ionizing radiation from the unshielded cosmic ray flux onto the martian surface. In this i

NASA GeneLab Project: Bridging Space Radiation Omics with Ground Studies.

Accurate assessment of risks of long-term space missions is critical for human space exploration. It is essential to have a detailed understanding of the biological effects on humans living and working in deep space. Ionizing radiation from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) is a major health risk factor for astronauts on extended missions outside the protective effects of the Earth's magnetic field. Currently, there are gaps in our knowledge of the health risks associated with chronic low-dose, low-dose-rate ionizing radiation, specifically ions associated with high (H) atomic number (Z) and energy (
