Diffuse lung disease caused by cotton fibre inhalation but distinct from byssinosis.

A 66 year old man had inhaled cotton fibre for 50 years at his workplace. He did not have any respiratory symptoms. Chest CT scans revealed diffuse centrilobular and peribronchovascular interstitial thickening. Lung biopsy specimens confirmed the presence of string-like foreign bodies as well as granulomas and fibrosis in the peribronchial region. Infrared spectrophotometry confirmed that the foreign bodies were composed of natural cellulose. This is the first study to show directly by examination of biopsy samples that cotton fibre inhalation can cause diffuse lung disease. The clinical featu

Mondays without dread: the Trade Union response to byssinosis in the Lancashire cotton industry in the twentieth century.

Trade unions have often been criticized for their failure to address occupational health issues. This article explores their response to byssinosis-a chronic respiratory disease caused by exposure to cotton dust that was rife in the Lancashire cotton industry in the early nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Using the archives of the cardroom and spinning unions, it is demonstrated that trade union efforts to combat byssinosis began before the First World War and were sustained for over 70 years. During that period, byssinosis became a recognized medical condition and a compensatable disease, d

Asymmetrical Pore Design of Sustainable Underwear for Improved Intimate Comfort.

The large amount of waste underwear generated has a considerable impact on the environment. Searching for more sustainable underwear materials and designs is important for effective air, thermal, and moisture management. However, sustainable cotton underwear is much less effective in moisture transport and in inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mites. Here, a hierarchically porous knitted fabric (HPKF) made from sustainable cotton and polylactic acid (PLA) fiber materials, constructed using an asymmetrical knitting pore design, is developed. The HPKF not only shows excellent moisture managem

Gaseous carbon dioxide removal from composting of biomass and cotton textile waste.

The carbon conversion efficiency of composting with food, yard, and cotton waste is analyzed herein. We demonstrate the ability of air-aerated and oxygen-aerated composting reactors to achieve carbon conversion efficiencies between 23 and 60 % and cotton mass degradation between 37 and 99 %. This carbon conversion efficiency is equivalent to removing 0.32 - 0.97 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of dry biomass waste processed, which compares favorably to the carbon removal potential of anaerobic digestion (0.04 - 0.40 t-CO2/t-biomass) and hydrothermal liquefaction (0.49 - 0.62 t-CO2/t-biomass), two BiCR

Phytic acid-induced durable fire-proof and hydrophobic complex coating for versatile cotton fabrics.

To address the current development requirements for multifunctional cotton fabrics, a phytic acid-induced flame-retardant hydrophobic coating containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silicon (Si) was grafted on the surface of cotton fabrics using a facile step-by-step immersion method. The limiting oxygen index value improved to 31.2 %, decreasing to 26.7 % after 50 laundering cycles, while the fabric remained self-extinguishing effect in the vertical flammability test and showed a water contact angle of 126.1°. Cone calorimetry test showed that the modified fabric could not be ignited at

Too Hot to Handle? Full-Thickness Burn Injury in a Child Caused by Cyanoacrylate Glue and Cotton-A Case Report and Experimental Study.

Domestic superglue (cyanoacrylate) in the hands of children can have devastating consequences, especially when cotton clothing is involved. When cotton comes into contact with cyanoacrylate, an intense exothermic reaction occurs, creating temperatures high enough to cause significant thermal injury. A literature review found 16 such cases of burns documented (2 adult and 14 pediatric). This article presents a case report of a 4-year-old child sustaining a full-thickness burn injury to her leg requiring skin grafting when superglue was spilt onto cotton pants. She was sitting near a fan heater

The population of coloured fibres in human head hair.

In 2002 a population study of textile fibres in human hair was carried out using 26 volunteers in Cambridgeshire, UK. Over 12,000 fibres were recovered from a variety of hair lengths using low adhesive tape and classified according to colour, generic type and fibre length. The results of the study showed that the most common fibre colours were black/grey (48%), blue (29.1%) and red (12.7%), the least common being green, orange/brown and yellow which each accounted for less than 5% of the total. Natural fibres (mainly cotton) were predominant (72.3%) and man-made fibres were considerably less f

A SERS-active swab for integrated sampling, response and detection of saliva of normal and sleep-deprived mice.

BACKGROUND: The redox status is closely related to physiology and pathology of organisms. Saliva has received increasing attention in health monitoring and medical diagnosis and more importantly, saliva is an ideal sample of non-invasive detection. The technology of quickly, easily and accurately detecting the redox-related parameters of the body can promote clinical diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and scientific research. RESULTS: The cotton fibers of a cotton swab were first fixed with PMMA, and then three micron-scaled SERS probes (redox potential, oxidative capacity, and pH) were dropped

Respiratory-function changes in textile workers exposed to synthetic fibers.

The prevalence of respiratory symptoms and acute and chronic changes in ventilatory function were studied in three groups of textile workers: 68 workers with exposure to synthetic fibers only, 30 with previous exposure to cotton, and 77 with previous exposure to hemp. The prevalence of dyspnea, grade 3 to 4, was significantly lower (P less than .01) in workers with a history of exposure to synthetic fibers only than in those previously exposed to hemp or cotton. No case of byssinosis was found in any of the workers studied. Values in ventilatory-function tests (FEV 1.0, FVC and MEF 50%) were s

Carbon fiber/microlattice 3D hybrid architecture as multi-scale scaffold for tissue engineering.

Multiscale 3D carbon architectures are of particular interest in tissue engineering applications, as these structures may allow for three-dimensional cell colonization essential for tissue growth. In this work, carbon fiber/microlattice hybrid architectures are introduced as innovative multi-scale scaffolds for tissue engineering. The microlattice provides the design freedom and structural integrity, whereas the fibrous component creates a cellular microenvironment for cell colonization. The hybrid structures are fabricated by carbonization of stereolithographically 3D printed epoxy microlatti

Traces under nails in clinical forensic medicine: not just DNA.

When dealing with complex crimes such as rape and assault, every trace takes on an essential role. The hands are often the only means of defence and offence for the victim as well as a frequent area of contact with the environment; fingernails of a victim are a well-known possible source of DNA of the aggressor; nevertheless, they are more rarely treated as an area of interest for non-genetic material, particularly on living victims. The hyponychium, because of its physiological protective function, lends itself ideally to retaining different kinds of traces representative of an environment or

Stimulation and release of prostaglandins and thromboxane from macrophages by cotton dust associated lipopolysaccharides.

Decreases in the ventilation capacity of human lungs following the inspiration of cotton dust correlates more closely with the concentration of endotoxin in the dust than with any other parameter measured thus far. A lipopolysaccharide isolated from the endotoxin of Enterobacter agglomerans, a common bacterial contaminant of cotton fiber, stimulated isolated rat macrophages to produce and release prostaglandins 6 keto-PGF1 alpha, PGF2 alpha, PGE2, PGD2, PGA2, and PGB2 and thromboxane B2. Nutrient management in calcareous soils under semi-arid environments: effects on cotton productivity and soil health.

In calcareous and alkaline soils, the availability of essential nutrients is limited, leading to substantial reductions in both yield and fiber quality in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production. This study investigated the effects of different combinations of sulfur (S), zinc sulfate (ZnSO₄), potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄), and urea on cotton yield and soil health in a two-year field experiment conducted under the conditions of the Şanlıurfa–Harran (Türkiye) Plain during the 2023–2024 growing seasons. Six different treatments were applied via soil and foliar application methods, and yield parame

Environmental impact of open burning of polyester and cotton textile waste: a comparative analysis.

Open burning of waste (OBW), particularly textile waste, is a growing but under-researched global issue with critical environmental and public health implications. This study examines the scale and impact of open burning of textile waste (OBTW), focusing on polyester and cotton materials commonly found in post-consumer and industrial waste streams. While high-income countries strictly regulate open burning, it remains prevalent in low- and middle-income countries due to limited waste infrastructure and poor waste management, contributing to severe air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissio

Improved cotton transformation protocol mediated by Agrobacterium and biolistic combined-methods.

The combined Agrobacterium- and biolistic-mediated methods of cotton transformation provide a straightforward and highly efficient protocol for obtaining transgenic cotton. Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is the most important crop for natural textile fiber production worldwide. Nonetheless, one of the main challenges in cotton production are the losses resulting from insect pests, pathogens, and abiotic stresses. One effective way to solve these issues is to use genetically modified (GM) varieties. Herein, we describe an improved protocol for straightforward and cost-effective genetic transformation

Structural basis for sequence-specific DNA recognition by a group IId WRKY transcription factor GhWRKY17 in cotton.

WRKY transcription factors, a plant-specific family of transcriptional regulators, are classified into four groups (I-IV) and play pivotal roles in plant defense, development, and stress responses. These proteins are characterized by conserved WRKY domains that preferentially bind to the W-box cis-element C/TTGACC/T in target gene promoters. In Gossypium hirsutum (Gh; upland cotton), the group IId member GhWRKY17 regulates cotton fiber development by activating downstream target genes such as GhHOX3 through promoter W-box binding. However, the structural basis for its DNA recognition specifici
