Investigating social communication in mice: A two-intruders test approach.

Understanding the complex dynamics of social communication behaviors, such as exploration, communication, courtship, mating, and aggression in animal models, is crucial to reveal key neural and hormonal mechanisms underlying these behaviors. The two-intruders test is designed to investigate residents' behavior toward both male and female intruders within the home cage of the test male. During this test imitating natural conditions, several aspects of social interaction were investigated: Exploration, courtship, mating, and aggressive behavior. As mating and aggression involve overlapping neura

Serum kisspeptin: New possible biomarker for sexual behaviour and sperm concentration in buffalo bulls.

The study was designed to decipher the inter-relationship between peripheral hormones (kisspeptin and testosterone), sexual behaviour and seminal variables of Murrah buffalo bulls (n = 134). In this study, we recorded that 13%, 37%, 40%, 6% and 4% Murrah buffalo bulls had reaction time of <30, 31-60, 61-180, 181-300 and >300 s, respectively. Further, it was observed that 4%, 85% and 10% buffalo bulls were sexually aggressive, active and dull, respectively, during semen collection. The courtship behaviour was not found to be desirable for the bulls used for the semen collection. Mean of ejacula

The Limits of Evolutionary Convergence in Sympatry: Reproductive Interference and Historical Constraints Leading to Local Diversity in Warning Traits.

AbstractMutualistic interactions between defended species represent a striking case of evolutionary convergence in sympatry, driven by the increased protection against predators brought by mimicry in warning traits. However, such convergence is often limited: sympatric defended species frequently display different or imperfectly similar warning traits. The phylogenetic distance between sympatric species may indeed prevent evolution toward the exact same signal. Moreover, warning traits are also involved in mate recognition, so trait convergence might result in heterospecific courtship and mati

Elevated temperatures have sex-specific effects on nuptial gift behavior.

Increasing developmental temperatures are well-known to impact fertility, yet their effects on pre-copulatory behaviors, despite having clear fitness consequences, are often overlooked. In many species, male nuptial gift presentation during courtship plays an important role in sex-specific mate choice, fitness and subsequent co-evolutionary dynamics. However, developmental temperature effects on nuptial gift behaviors and their implications for population fitness remain unknown. Heat-induced changes to male behavior may signal fertility, diving female discrimination, particularly in monandrous

Experimental trait mismatches uncover specificity of evolutionary links between multiple signaling traits and their interactions in hummingbirds.

Many animal signals co-occur, and these signals may coevolve due to their interactive properties. Previous work has demonstrated ecological drivers of evolutionary relationships between signals and the environment, which leads to questions about why specific signal pairs evolved among species that possess multiple signals. We asked whether the coloration of different species was optimized for presentation with its natural behavioral display. We investigated this in "bee" hummingbirds, where males exhibit angle-dependent structurally-colored plumage and a stereotyped courtship (shuttle) display

The Intricate Role of Ecdysis Triggering Hormone Signaling in Insect Development and Reproductive Regulation.

Insect growth is interrupted by molts, during which the insect develops a new exoskeleton. The exoskeleton confers protection and undergoes shedding between each developmental stage through an evolutionarily conserved and ordered sequence of behaviors, collectively referred to as ecdysis. Ecdysis is triggered by Ecdysis triggering hormone (ETH) synthesized and secreted from peripheral Inka cells on the tracheal surface and plays a vital role in the orchestration of ecdysis in insects and possibly in other arthropod species. ETH synthesized by Inka cells then binds to ETH receptor (ETHR) presen

Minimal effects of 17 beta-hydroxy-17 alpha-methyl-estra-4,9,11-triene-3-one (R1881) on sexual behaviour in prepubertally castrated rams.

Ten adult prepubertally castrated rams were injected with 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP; 20 mg/day) for 3 weeks to stimulate genital development. Thereafter, half of the sheep were injected with testosterone (100 mg/day) for a further 4 weeks, while the remainder received the same dose of 17 beta-hydroxy-17 alpha-methyl-estra-4,9,11-triene-3-one (methyltrienolone; R1881). All the animals were tested for sexual behaviour on 15 occasions with ovariectomized ewes in which oestrous behaviour was induced by injections of 50 micrograms oestradiol-17 beta benzoate at 4- to 5-day interv

Body sway predicts romantic interest in speed dating.

Social bonding is fundamental to human society, and romantic interest involves an important type of bonding. Speed dating research paradigms offer both high external validity and experimental control for studying romantic interest in real-world settings. While previous studies focused on the effect of social and personality factors on romantic interest, the role of non-verbal interaction has been little studied in initial romantic interest, despite being commonly viewed as a crucial factor. The present study investigated whether romantic interest can be predicted by non-verbal dyadic interacti

Effects of dietary methylmercury on reproductive behavior of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

We examined the effects of dietary methylmercury on the production of testosterone in and the reproductive behavior of male fish. Juvenile fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were fed one of three diets contaminated with methylmercury at concentrations of 0.06 (control), 0.87 (low), and 3.93 (medium) microg Hg/g dry weight. After attaining sexual maturity, fish were paired for mating, and male behaviors were recorded. Carcass mercury and plasma testosterone concentrations also were measured. No significant differences were found in the amount of time spent by male fish in nest preparation or

Histological and Gene Expression Analyses of the Arm and Finger Macroglands of Two Hyloxalus Frogs (Dendrobatidae).

Chemical communication during courtship is well documented in salamanders and newts, but its role in frogs is less understood. In some Neotropical poison frogs, males exhibit specialised mucous glands (SMGs) in the hand integument that express high levels of sodefrin precursor-like factors (SPFs), an amphibian pheromone. Some species also show integumentary swellings at the distal upper arm-known as the black arm gland (BAG)-of unclear function. We used histology and RNA sequencing to analyse the arm and finger integument of Hyloxalus nexipus and H. azureiventris to examine glandular compositi

Ecologically-relevant exposure to methylmercury during early development does not affect adult phenotype in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Methylmercury causes behavioural and reproductive effects in adult mammals via early developmental exposure. Similar studies in birds are limited and mostly focussed on aquatic systems, but recent work has reported high blood mercury concentrations in terrestrial, passerine songbirds. We used the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) as a model to explore the long-term effects of early developmental exposure to methylmercury exposure. Chicks were dosed orally with either the vehicle control, 0.0315 µg Hg/g bw/day, or 0.075 µg Hg/g bw/day throughout the nestling period (days 1-21 post-hatching). We

A comparison of nonpatient and bipolar patient-well spouse couples.

The authors compared responses of 16 couples, in which one partner had a diagnosis of remitted bipolar illness, to a lengthy self-report questionnaire (KDS-15) designed to assess many aspects of marital adjustment with those of 16 matched nonpatient couples. The bipolar patient-well spouse couples had marital adjustments closely resembling those of the nonpatient couples; three of four global ratings of satisfaction failed to discriminate between the two groups. Perceptions of the courtship, first year of marriage, and the degree to which the marriage had met expectations were also similar for

Psychological abuse among college women in dating relationships.

A questionnaire designed to measure psychological abuse and kindness was responded to by 90 college women involved in dating relationships. Analysis indicated that, while many relationships were low abuse/high kindness, a substantial number were characterized by high abuse/low kindness, high abuse/high kindness and low abuse/low kindness. An analysis of these different categories of dating relationships as well as explanations as to why young women should be in such negative relationships are included. The study also indicated significant differences between women's reports of feelings and beh

Molecular analysis of an odorant-binding protein gene in two sympatric species of Lutzomyia longipalpis s.l.

Lutzomyia longipalpis s.l. is the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) and occurs as a species complex. DNA samples from two Brazilian sympatric species that differ in pheromone and courtship song production were used to analyse molecular polymorphisms in an odorant-binding protein (obp29) gene. OBPs are proteins related to olfaction and are involved in activities fundamental to survival, such as foraging, mating and choice of oviposition site. In this study, the marker obp29 was found to be highly polymorphic in Lu. longipalpis s.l. , with no fixed differences observed between

Beyond rodents: A systematic review of antidepressant-like effects in Drosophila melanogaster as an alternative model in psychopharmacology.

The development of antidepressants has traditionally relied on vertebrate models. Drosophila melanogaster offers a promising alternative approach, yet evidence of antidepressant-like effects is fragmented. The aim of this systematic review was to analyse the literature on the effects of antidepressants on D. melanogaster behaviours. A comprehensive search of a number of bibliographic databases (i.e. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and EMBASE) was followed by a further screening of the retrieved articles (i.e. inclusion of studies on any D. melanogaster strain, sex, age, dose or outcome, tested

Detection of estrus in Indian blackbuck: behavioural, hormonal and urinary volatiles evaluation.

The determination of the reproductive status is one of the most important factors for effective wild life conservation and management, and effective use of assisted reproductive techniques like artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer depends on the knowledge of the basic reproductive physiology. In this context the reproductive status of female blackbucks (Antelope cervicapra L.) was assessed by behaviour and determination, sex steroid hormones in faeces and urinary volatile compounds. The male and female blackbucks exhibited as many as 31 different reproductive/courtsh

Age-dependent cognitive impairment in a Drosophila fragile X model and its pharmacological rescue.

Fragile X syndrome afflicts 1 in 2,500 individuals and is the leading heritable cause of mental retardation worldwide. The overriding clinical manifestation of this disease is mild to severe cognitive impairment. Age-dependent cognitive decline has been identified in Fragile X patients, although it has not been fully characterized nor examined in animal models. A Drosophila model of this disease has been shown to display phenotypes bearing similarity to Fragile X symptoms. Most notably, we previously identified naive courtship and memory deficits in young adults with this model that appear to

Gender roles and interactions in drinking and drug use.

In gender-focused discussions of alcohol and other drug use and problems, the emphasis has usually been on the individual male or female or on the genders as aggregates of individuals. But most drinking and much drug use have strong social and interactional elements, where gender roles and often gendered interactions come into play. Drawing on the existing literature, opportunities for research on gender roles and interactions in drinking and drug use and problems are discussed under the following headings: courtship and affectional preference; sexuality; marriage and partnership; parenthood;

Enhancer of garnet/deltaAP-3 is a cryptic allele of the white gene and identifies the intracellular transport system for the white protein.

The white gene encodes an ABC-type transmembrane transporter that has a role in normal eye pigment deposition. In addition, overexpression in Drosophila leads to homosexual male courtship. Its human homologue has been implicated in cholesterol transport in macrophages and in mood disorders in human males. The garnet gene is a member of a group of other Drosophila eye colour genes that have been shown, or proposed, to function in intracellular protein transport. Recent molecular analysis indicates that it encodes the delta subunit of the AP-3 adaptin complex involved in vesicle transport from t
