Cross-cultural Adaptation and Validity of the Patient Rated Michigan Hand Outcome Questionnaire in Bahasa Melayu for Malaysian Patients.

Background: The Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) was designed in 1998 by Chung and colleagues at the University of Michigan in 1998. It is a hand-specific patient-rated outcome (PRO) instrument used to measure patients' outcome with conditions of, or injury to, the hand and/or wrist. This study is aimed at translating and cross-culturally adapting the MHQ into Bahasa Melayu (BM), examining the validity and reliability of the MHQ-BM version for our local population to be used as a patient-rated outcome measurement in Malaysian patients with hand injuries. Methods: This study was perfo

Cross-cultural adaptation, translation, and validation of a Spanish version of the Westmead Post-traumatic Amnesia Scale for use following a traumatic brain injury.

Health professionals need linguistically and culturally correct tools with proven validity to effectively assess people in their native language. This study aimed to translate and validate the Westmead Post-traumatic Amnesia Scale (WPTAS) into a Spanish version to measure the progression and duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) in Spanish-speaking populations. Seven native Spanish and English translators, 11 therapists and 15 people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and nine people with non-traumatic acquired brain injury participated in the forward-backward translation method to adapt t

The impacts of gaming expansion on economic growth: a theoretical reconsideration.

This paper employs a general equilibrium framework to analyze the effects on economic growth of global expansions in casino gaming, which exports gambling services largely to non-residents. Both domestic and foreign investments in the gaming sector bring in not only substantial revenues but also positive spillover effects on related sectors and even on the entire local economy. However, an over-expansion of commercial gambling may lead to deterioration in the terms of trade with an adverse impact on real income. If this situation persists, it would not be impossible for immiserizing growth to

The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Sensitivity and Information Sharing in Employee Turnover Intentions: A Franco-Moroccan Cross-cultural Mediation Study.

This paper examines the relationship between perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) and intention to leave the organization through a cross-cultural comparison between France and Morocco. It also explores the roles of CSR sensitivity and CSR information sharing as antecedents, and of person-organization fit (PO-fit) as a mediator of the relationship under study. Two cross-sectional samples were collected: French (n = 243) and Moroccan (n = 234). Invariance and structural equation modeling path analyses were conducted to test the hypothesized model. Results reveal partial scalar (mean)

Social Representation of "Hearing Loss" Among People with Hearing Loss: An Exploratory Cross-Cultural Study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss can have an effect on the physical, psychosocial, and cognitive wellbeing of an individual. Despite the research on attitudes and stigma associated with hearing loss, people with hearing loss (PHL) continue to delay seeking help. Thus, it is vital to look at alternative theories which have been successfully used in disability research to better understand how PHL perceive hearing loss. PURPOSE: The aim of the current exploratory study was to examine the social representation (SR) of "hearing loss" in PHL in India, Republic of Korea (ROK), United Kingdom (UK), and the

Cross-Cultural Variation in the Noun Bias in Early Vocabulary Development: A Systematic Review.

Children's early vocabularies have been observed to be predominated by nouns, particularly concrete and animate nouns. This phenomenon, known as the "noun bias," is argued to reflect a universal conceptual advantage for concrete objects in early word learning, because such referents are perceived as bounded, individualized concepts that are ready to be mapped onto linguistic labels. The noun bias has been observed across a wide range of languages using multiple methodological approaches, establishing it as a robust feature of early lexical development. However, the magnitude and consistency of

Drug policy and culture: A cross-national comparative study using Hofstede's index.

BACKGROUND: National drug policies vary widely across countries, shaped by historical, institutional, economic, and social factors. However, the role of cultural values in shaping drug policies remains underexplored. This study applies Hofstede's cultural dimensions index to assess associations between national cultural norms and Global Drug Policy Index (GDPI) scores. METHODS: We conducted a cross-national comparative analysis using data from 25 countries with both GDPI scores and Hofstede's cultural dimension scores in 2021. The dependent variable was the GDPI overall score and four sub-ind

European Reference Network (ERN) ReCONNET methodology for the cross-cultural adaptation of instruments for research and care in the context of rare connective tissue diseases (CROSSADAPT).

The traditional process of intercultural adaptation, while suitable for one or a few target languages, is not optimal for developing instruments for rare connective tissue diseases (CTDs) in multiple languages simultaneously. The European Reference Network ReCONNET presents the protocol for a novel methodology for cross-cultural adaptation of instruments for research and care in the context of rare CTDs (ReCONNET-CROSSADAPT). It is initiated by the identification of 'key-terms' that are crucial for maintaining the original meaning of the source document. Each language group, led by a senior me

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Constipation Assessment Scale among Chinese Adult Psychiatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that presents with signs and symptoms, which are typically assessed subjectively. Various measurement scales, such as the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS), are commonly used to evaluate constipation among the general population. However, the instruments should be culturally and contextually relevant in adult psychiatric patients to generate valid and reliable evidence. PURPOSE: This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and psychometrically validate the traditional Chinese version of the CAS among adult psychiatric patients

A cross-cultural study of high-altitude botanical resources among diverse ethnic groups in Kashmir Himalaya, India.

BACKGROUND: In the Himalayas, traditional knowledge and biodiversity are strongly linked due to the symbiotic interaction between plant and cultural diversity, as well as the support provided by cultural memories, ecological awareness, and social norms. Our study was focused on documenting the vanishing knowledge in the Kashmir Himalaya with the following main objectives: 1) to document the ethnomedical and cultural knowledge of the local flora, 2) to evaluate the cross-cultural use of the flora in the region, and, finally, 3) to identify the key indicator species utilized by each ethnic group

Active visual inhibition is preserved in the presence of a distracter: A cross-cultural, ageing and dementia study.

The current study investigated a novel visual distracter task as a potential diagnostic marker for the detection of cognitive impairment and the extent to which this compares in healthy ageing across two cultures. The Inhibition of a Recent Distracter Effect (IRD) refers to the inhibition of a saccadic eye movement towards a target that is presented at the location of a previous distracter. Two studies compared the IRD across a large cross-cultural sample comprising of young (N = 75), old European participants (N = 119), old south Asian participants (N = 83), participants with Dementia due to

Maternal grief in cross-cultural context: Selective neglect, replaceable infants and lifesaving names.

Scheper-Hughes divides mothers onto "better off" vis-à-vis "poor" mothers stuck in "old" reproductive strategy with high fertility. Cultural construction of mother love allows the latter group to neglect their "worst bets" to death without grief. Based on the bio-evolutionary theory, Hrdy hints that "modern" Western mothers, guided by ethical behavior, care for unviable infants while mothers in "non-Western societies" might dispose them of due to innate responses. This article warns against such binary division of mothers. Ethnographic research indicates that notions of replaceable infants, fa
