Manipulation of the shore crab Metopograpsus thukuhar by the parasitic barnacle Polyascus planus (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Rhizocephala): Effects of the parasitism on hemolymph parameters and rootlet-infiltrated tissues of the host.

The present study assessed the impact of parasitism of Polyascus planus on the hemolymph parameters and rootlet-infiltrated tissues of the shore crab Metopograpsus thukuhar. First, hemolymph parameters were compared between hosts harboring internal infection (Hit) and non-parasitized host crabs (Hnp). The percentage of Hit with culturable bacteria in the hemolymph was significantly higher than that of Hnp when samples were cultured on Luria-Bertani (LB) agar, but the difference between Hit and Hnp was statistically insignificant when samples were cultured on Vibrio-selective X-VP agar. The freshwater crab genera Ghatiana Pati Sharma, Gubernatoriana Bott, and Inglethelphusa Bott (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) revisited, with descriptions of a new genus and eleven new species.

The taxonomy of three morphologically related and endemic genera of the northern Western Ghats (Ghatiana Pati Sharma, 2014, Gubernatoriana Bott, 1970, and Inglethelphusa Bott, 1970) is re-assessed to accommodate several new taxa. We describe a new genus, Sahyadriana gen. nov. and its five new species [S. billyarjani sp. nov., S. pachyphallus sp. nov., S. sahyadriensis sp. nov. (type species), S. tenuiphallus sp. nov., and S. woodmasoni sp. nov.]. Additionally, three new species each of Ghatiana (Gh. botti sp. nov., Gh. pulchra sp. nov., and Gh. rathbunae sp. nov.) and Gubernatoriana (Gu. longi

Exploring parasites in extreme environments of high conservational importance: Artemia franciscana (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) as intermediate host of avian cestodes in Andean hypersaline lagoons from Salar de Atacama, Chile.

The hypersaline lagoons located in evaporation basins or salars (salt flats) in the Atacama Desert are extreme environments harbouring a specialised biota able to survive harsh conditions for life. The knowledge of the parasitic biodiversity of these extreme habitats is still scarce despite their functional importance in regulating relevant non-economic services like habitats of waterbirds. The present study is the first report on the cestode infection of Artemia franciscana Kellogg in Salar de Atacama lagoons in northern Chile. A total of 23 parasite larvae were isolated and identified as bel

[Influence of the cymothoid isopods Meinertia oestroides, Meinertia parallela, and Anilocra physodes (Crustacea; parasites of fish) on the growth of hosts, Boops boops and Pagellus erythrinus (Sparidae) (author's transl)].

Studies of weight-size (W = aLb) and growth (L = aT + b) in fish (Boops boops and Pagellus erythrinus), potential hosts of some Cymothoid isopods (Meinertia oestroides, Meinertia parallela, and Anilocra physodes) have been performed. Infested fishes show a slight decrease in weight compared to normal fish. Cymothoid do not exert a significant influence on the weight-size ratio; on the other hand, a delay in growth does occur.

Reappraisal of species attributed to Halicarcinus White, 1846 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Hymenosomatidae) with diagnosis of four new genera and one new species from New Ireland, Papua New Guinea.

Species of Hymenosomatidae previously treated as species or junior synonyms of species of Halicarcinus White, 1846 are assigned to this and other genera. Halicarcinus is restricted to seven valid species; Rhynchoplax Stimpson, 1858, since 1980 synonymised with Halicarcinus, is now recognised with four species; four species are added to Micas Ng & Richer de Forges, 1996 (making five in total); and four new genera are erected: Culexisoma n. gen. (two species, one newly described), Lucascinus n. gen. (three species), Nasutoplax n. gen. (one species) and Stimpsoplax n. gen. (three species). The ge

Larval development of Japanese 'conchostracans': part 2, larval development of Caenestheriella gifuensis (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Spinicaudata, Cyzicidae), with notes on homologies and evolution of certain naupliar appendages within the Branchiopoda.

As part of a larger project examining and comparing the ontogeny of all major taxa of the Branchiopoda in a phylogenetic context, the larval development of Caenestheriella gifuensis (Ishikawa, 1895), a Japanese spinicaudatan 'conchostracan', is described by scanning electron microscopy. Seven different larval stages are recognised, in most cases based on significant morphological differences. They range in length from about 200 to 850mum. Nauplius 1 has a plumb and lecithotrophic appearance with a rounded hind body and a labrum with an incipient medial spine. Limb segmentation is mostly unclea

Finding Nemo! Description of a New Species of Branchial Fish Parasitic Cymothoid, Elthusa Schioedte and Meinert, 1884 (Crustacea: Isopoda), infesting Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837 from the Northern Indian Ocean.

PURPOSE: Specimens of Elthusa from trashfish of the Indian SW coast were described as a new parasitic cymothoid, Elthusa nemo sp. nov., (Crustacea: Isopoda). Later, the branchial cavity of the Blotchfin dragonet Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837 were documented as its micro- and macro-habitat (host). METHODS: Fresh/live specimens of unidentified cymothoid samples were collected from the trash fishes obtained from Neendakara (08°30.0' N 76°53.30' E) fish landing centre, Kollam district, Kerala state, southwest coast of India. After a long search for the host species, we recovered the

An updated and detailed taxonomical account of the large Branchiopoda (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) from the Yale North India Expedition deposited in the Yale Peabody Natural History Museum.

We present an updated taxonomic account of a few of the large branchiopod species present in the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Our study shows that the Artemia species in the collections is not Artemia salina given the presence of spines at the base of the penis and its frontal knob morphology. This population cannot be assigned to any particular species due to lack of comparative material of other Artemia species and therefore, now reduces the authentic distribution record of Artemia salina to just one in the subcontinent. The morphology of eggs taken from the Str

[Cross reactivity between fish and shellfish].

In Spain, fish allergy represents 18 % of all cases of food allergy in children while reactions caused by crustacea and mollusks account for 3.8 % and 1.6 % respectively. Cross-reactivity is defined as the recognition of distinct antigens by the same IgE antibody, demonstrable by in vivo and in vitro tests, which clinically manifests as reactions caused by antigens homologous to different species. Subclinical sensitization can also occur, giving rise to patients sensitized to particular fish or shellfish but who do not present symptoms on consumption.Cod and shrimp have been the models used to

A reliable and sensitive immunoassay for the determination of crustacean protein in processed foods.

Among food allergens, crustacea such as shrimps, crabs, and lobsters are a frequent cause of adverse food reactions in allergic patients. The major allergen has been identified as a muscular protein, tropomyosin. A novel sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection and quantification of crustacean protein in processed foods was developed using the sample dilution buffer that is added to porcine tropomyosin. The sandwich ELISA method was highly specific for the Decapoda group, apart from minor cross-reactivities to other crustacea and mollusks. The recovery ranged from 8

Immunologic evaluation of shrimp-allergic individuals.

Thirty-three individuals with a history of immediate hypersensitivity reactions after shrimp ingestion and 29 nonshrimp-sensitive control subjects were evaluated for evidence of crustacea-specific immunity by skin prick test titration end point, RAST, and ELISA, with extracts of shrimp, crab, crayfish, and lobster. Individuals were categorized as either atopic or nonatopic on the basis of history and skin test reactivity to common inhalant allergens. Most (28/33) shrimp-sensitive subjects had positive skin prick tests to shrimp extract, whereas skin tests were negative in 27/29 control subject

Reinstatement and redescription of Lebbeus armatus (Owen, 1839), long synonymized with L. groenlandicus (Fabricius, 1775), and description of one new species from the southwestern Sea of Okhotsk, Hokkaido, Japan (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea: Thoridae).

The caridean shrimp species Lebbeus armatus (Owen, 1839) (Thoridae), originally described from Kamchatka, is reinstated from the synonymy of L. groenlandicus (Fabricius, 1775) and redescribed. It is easily distinguished from L. groenlandicus by having dense covering of short setae on the carapace and lateral parts of the pleon (versus only sparse setae are present), the clearly delimited branchial ridge on the carapace (versus at most a trace of a branchial ridge being discernible), the postrostral dorsal teeth noticeably becoming stronger and higher anteriorly (versus the anteriormost postros

Pathogens and other symbionts of the Amphipoda: taxonomic diversity and pathological significance.

With over 10000 species of Amphipoda currently described, this order is one of the most diverse groups of freshwater and marine Crustacea. Members of this group are globally distributed, and many are keystone species and ecosystem engineers within their respective ecologies. As with most organisms, disease is a key factor that can alter population size, behaviour, survival, invasion potential and physiology of amphipod hosts. This review explores symbiont diversity and pathology in amphipods by coalescing a range of current and historical literature to provide the first full review of our unde

A New Species of Hatschekiid Copepod (Crustacea: Hatschekiidae) Parasitic on the Porkfish Anisotremus virginicus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Actinopterygii: Haemulidae), with Notes on Previously Known Species of Hatschekia Poche, 1902 Collected from Actinopterygians off Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Copepods of the genus Hatschekia Poche, 1902 are parasitic on the gills of marine actinopterygians. Currently, about 151 species of this genus have been reported in marine ecosystems and only few occur in South Atlantic Ocean. METHODS: Fifty specimens of A. virginicus from Angra dos Reis, off the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were parasitized by copepods on the gills. Parasites were fixed and preserved in 70% ethanol. Morphological observations were based on light and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Hatschekia nagasawai n. sp. can be distinguished from all congeners b

Cypermethrin induces glutathione S-transferase activity in the shore crab, Carcinus maenas.

Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that is particularly toxic to crustacea. It is therefore applied as a chemotherapeutant in the salmonid aquaculture industry for the treatment of sea lice infestations. After use, cypermethrin is released directly into the marine environment, to be diluted by fresh seawater. The shore crab, Carcinus maenas is found in the vicinity of fish farms, and may come into contact with released cypermethrin. The detoxification enzyme, glutathione S-transferase (GST) has been implicated in cypermethrin metabolism in terrestrial arthropods, but this has not yet been

["Aquarium" allergy: bronchial asthma caused by polyvalent sensitization to various components in fish food].

Chironomus larvae seem to be the principal sensitizer in fish food allergy. In addition, a variety of other Arthropoda species that are used as fish food can induce immediate hypersensitivity. Attention is drawn to this polyvalent sensitization by presenting the case history of a 27-year-old patient who kept fish and who suffered from allergic asthma bronchiale. He showed strongly positive reactions in skin tests for Chironomus and Culex larvae, as well as several kinds of Crustacea species, such as Daphnia and brine shrimps.

Expression of a homologue of the fushi tarazu (ftz) gene in a cirripede crustacean.

In Metazoa, Hox genes control the identity of the body parts along the anteroposterior axis. In addition to this homeotic function, these genes are characterized by two conserved features: They are clustered in the genome, and they contain a particular sequence, the homeobox, encoding a DNA-binding domain. Analysis of Hox homeobox sequences suggests that the Hox cluster emerged early in Metazoa and then underwent gene duplication events. In arthropods, the Hox cluster contains eight genes with a homeotic function and two other Hox-like genes, zerknullt (zen)/Hox3 and fushi tarazu (ftz). In ins

Environmental risk assessment of widely used anticancer drugs (5-fluorouracil, cisplatin, etoposide, imatinib mesylate).

Anticancer drugs are among the most toxic chemicals, which are commercially produced; therefore, their release in aquatic ecosystems raised concerns in regard to potential adverse effects. This article describes the results of risk assessments concerning their environmental safety, which are based on data generated in the frame of a coordinated EU project ("Cytothreat"). Eight research institutions participated in the project and four widely used anticancer drugs with different mechanisms of therapeutic action (5-fluorouracil 5FU, cisplatin CDDP, imatinib mesylate IM and etoposide ET) were tes
