Ethnicity is an independent correlate of biomarkers of micronutrient intake and status in American adults.

Diet may be among the factors that mediate the acknowledged ethnicity and socioeconomic differentials in health. Biomarkers of nutritional exposure avoid reliance on biased self-reports of diet and allow an objective assessment of dietary differentials associated with ethnicity and socioeconomic position. We used data from the NHANES III (n = 13113) and NHANES 1999-2002 (n = 7246) to examine ethnic, education, and income differentials in serum concentrations of nutrients of putative public health importance (vitamins C, D, and E, folate, carotenoids, selenium, and ferritin) in U.S. adults. Method for the determination of beta-carotene in supplements and raw materials by reversed-phase liquid chromatography: single laboratory validation.

A single laboratory validation (SLV) study was conducted for a liquid chromatography (LC) method for the determination of total and all-trans-beta-carotene in a variety of dietary supplements, including multivitamin tablets, softgels, capsules, and beadlet raw materials. Extraction variants were developed for the different types of supplements tested based upon the supplement type and level of beta-carotene. Water dispersible formulations such as powders, emulsions, tablets, and capsules were enzymatically digested with protease and extracted with dichloromethane-ethanol. Oily suspensions were

Antioxidant intake and primary open-angle glaucoma: a prospective study.

The relation between dietary antioxidant intake and primary open-angle glaucoma risk was examined in participants aged over 40 years in the Nurses' Health Study (n = 76,200) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (n = 40,284). They were followed biennially from 1980 and 1986, respectively, to 1996, during periods when they received an eye examination. Dietary intakes were measured repeatedly from 1980 in the Nurses' Health Study and from 1986 in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study using validated food frequency questionnaires. The authors analyzed 474 self-reported glaucoma cases co

A prospective study of carotenoid intake and risk of cataract extraction in US men.

BACKGROUND: Dietary antioxidants, including carotenoids, are hypothesized to decrease the risk of age-related cataracts by preventing oxidation of proteins or lipids within the lens. However, prospective epidemiologic data concerning this phenomenon are limited. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine prospectively the association between carotenoid and vitamin A intakes and cataract extraction in men. DESIGN: US male health professionals (n = 36644) who were 45-75 y of age in 1986 were included in this prospective cohort study. Others were subsequently included as they became 45 y of age. A

Childhood vitamin A status and the risk of otitis media.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that vitamin A deficiency may predispose to otitis media. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational study of 200 children, ages 3 to 5 years, on the island of Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Baseline measurements of serum retinol concentrations were obtained from the children, and incidence of otitis media was determined during the following year by review of medical records. The sera were also tested for concentration of other carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene)

Association of serum carotenoids, steatotic liver disease, and metabolic dysfunctions with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality.

Carotenoids have been associated with a lower risk of mortality in the general population. However, their association with mortality among individuals with steatotic liver disease is unclear. This study investigated the relationship between serum carotenoids with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among individuals with and without steatotic liver disease and whether the presence of metabolic dysfunctions might modify this association. This study used data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with mortality follow-up through 31 December 2019. Total

Marine-derived Bioactives as Novel Interventions for Cardiovascular Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, affecting the heart, vasculature, pulmonary circulation, and cerebrovascular functions. Bioactive compounds from natural sources, particularly marine organisms, are gaining attention for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective effects, offering safer alternatives to synthetic drugs. METHODS: This narrative review collated and critically analyzed peer-reviewed literature from the past two decades on marine-derived bioactive compounds with potential cardiovascular benefits.

Lifestyle, Behavioral, and Dietary Risk Factors in Relation to Mammographic Breast Density in Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women at high risk for breast cancer due to genetics or risk factor profiles are counseled to adopt lifestyle, behavioral, and dietary changes to help reduce their risk. These recommendations are based on studies of women at average risk, so their effectiveness in high-risk women is unclear. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and intake of folate and carotenoids on mammographic breast density-a proxy for breast cancer risk-among 387 high-risk women. Exposures were self-reported on questionnaires. Breast dense area, nondense area, a

Advancing provitamin A biofortification in sorghum: Genome-wide association studies of grain carotenoids in global germplasm.

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most prevalent nutritional deficiencies worldwide. Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor L. (Moench)] is a major cereal crop consumed by millions of people in regions with high vitamin A deficiency. We quantified carotenoid concentrations in a diverse sorghum panel using high-performance liquid chromatography and conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of grain carotenoids to identify genes underlying carotenoid variation. There was moderate variation for β-carotene (00.8 μg g-1 ), lutein (0.3-9.4 μg g-1 ), and zeaxanthin (0.2-9.1 μg g-1 ), but β-cryptoxanthin an

Carotenoid intake and head and neck cancer: a pooled analysis in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium.

Food and nutrition play an important role in head and neck cancer (HNC) etiology; however, the role of carotenoids remains largely undefined. We explored the relation of HNC risk with the intake of carotenoids within the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium. We pooled individual-level data from 10 case-control studies conducted in Europe, North America, and Japan. The analysis included 18,207 subjects (4414 with oral and pharyngeal cancer, 1545 with laryngeal cancer, and 12,248 controls), categorized by quintiles of carotenoid intake from natural sources. Comparing the hi

Association between carotenoids and outcome of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that micronutrients such as alpha-tocopherol, retinol, lutein, cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and alpha- and beta-carotene may help in the prevention of cervical cancer. Our aim was to investigate whether serum concentrations and/or dietary intake of micronutrients influence the regression or progression of low-grade cervical abnormalities. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 391 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1-2 lesions, we measured serum micronutrient concentrations in addition to a self-administered questionnaire about dietar

Effects of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate v. high-protein, moderate-carbohydrate weight-loss diet on antioxidant status, endothelial markers and plasma indices of the cardiometabolic profile.

There are concerns that weight-loss (WL) diets based on very low carbohydrate (LC) intake have a negative impact on antioxidant status and biomarkers of cardiovascular and metabolic health. Obese men (n 16) participated in a randomised, cross-over design diet trial, with food provided daily, at approximately 8.3 MJ/d (approximately 70 % of energy maintenance requirements). They were provided with two high-protein diets (30 % of energy), each for a 4-week period, involving a LC (4 % carbohydrate) and a moderate carbohydrate (MC, 35 % carbohydrate) content. Body weight was measured daily, and we

Micronutrient antioxidants in gastric mucosa and serum in patients with gastritis and gastric ulcer: does Helicobacter pylori infection affect the mucosal levels?

Free radicals (FRs) play an important role in the pathogenesis of gastroduodenal mucosal inflammation, peptic ulcer disease, and probably even gastric cancer. Various micronutrients protect the gastric mucosa by scavenging FRs. Only limited data is available regarding the concentration of micronutrients in the gastric mucosa in patients with gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Our aim was to analyze micronutrient antioxidant concentrations in the antral mucosa in patients with gastritis and gastric ulcer and to determine the influence of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastric mucosal antioxi
