Effect of external cueing on gait in Huntington's disease.

In Huntington's disease (HD) patients, gait is characterized by a timing disorder with marked intraindividual variability in temporal gait parameters (caused by the presence of both hyperkinetic and hypokinetic features). We sought to determine the influence of use of a metronome on gait parameters in patients simultaneously performing motor or cognitive tasks that required attentional resources. The objective is to evaluate the influence of rhythmic cues on gait interference during self-regulated walking and a dual task paradigm in HD. Fifteen HD patients and 15 paired controls were asked to

Dependent multiple cue integration for robust tracking.

We propose a new technique for fusing multiple cues to robustly segment an object from its background in video sequences that suffer from abrupt changes of both illumination and position of the target. Robustness is achieved by the integration of appearance and geometric object features and by their estimation using Bayesian filters, such as Kalman or particle filters. In particular, each filter estimates the state of a specific object feature, conditionally dependent on another feature estimated by a distinct filter. This dependence provides improved target representations, permitting to segm

The personalized cueing method: from the laboratory to the clinic.

PURPOSE: The personalized cueing method is a novel procedure for treating naming deficits of persons with aphasia that is relatively unfamiliar to most speech-language pathologists. The goal of this article is to introduce the personalized cueing method to clinicians so that it might be expanded and improved upon. It is also hoped that this article will promote further research in the treatment of naming deficits of clients with aphasia. METHOD: This clinical focus article (a) describes the origins of the personalized cueing method, the steps involved in creating personalized cues, and traini

Alcohol cue reactivity in alcohol-dependent adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial evidence that adults with alcohol dependence show different responses (increased craving, increased salivation, changes in heart rate) to alcohol-related stimuli (i.e., alcohol cue reactivity) than nonalcoholics. Alcohol cue reactivity appears to be related to dependence severity and has been used to predict treatment outcomes, where more reactive alcoholics have poorer outcomes than less reactive alcoholics. Adolescents may also develop alcohol dependence, though it is uncertain whether they experience craving and cue reactivity in the presence of alcohol-assoc

Cue-induced brain activity in pathological gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have identified differential brain activity in healthy subjects performing gambling tasks and in pathological gambling (PG) subjects when exposed to motivational and emotional predecessors for gambling as well as during gambling or response inhibition tasks. The goal of the present study was to determine if PG subjects exhibit differential brain activity when exposed to visual gambling cues. METHODS: Ten male DSM-IV-TR PG subjects and 10 matched healthy control subjects underwent fMRI during visual presentations o

Cue exposure in the treatment of resistant bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: It was hypothesized that binge eating (bulimia nervosa [BN]) may be caused by the anticipatory and immediate anxiety associated with certain types of food. Consequently, an extinction schedule should reduce binge eating. METHODS: Cue exposure was carried out with 6 bulimic women who had responded poorly or not at all to the usual pharmacologic or cognitive-behavioral treatments. RESULTS: Binge eating and vomiting were almost totally suppressed in the 6 patients. Symptom suppression was maintained at two follow-ups, one at 4-20 months and another at 2.5-3 years. DISCUSSION: Cue ex

On recognizing proper names: the orthographic cue hypothesis.

Five experiments investigated the recognition of proper names and common nouns using the lexical decision paradigm. In Experiments 1-3 the case of the initial letter of written stimuli was systematically varied. An advantage was consistently found for proper names written with the first letter in capital. Crucially, response times to proper names with the first letter in lowercase and to common nouns irrespective of the case of the first letter did not differ from each other. No difference between proper names and common nouns emerged in Experiment 4 where the stimuli were presented auditorily

Autobiographical recollection and affects of cues in an amnesic patient.

The individual described herein (Y.K.) is a pure amnesic patient with severe anterograde amnesia and a selective loss of specific personal episodes in his remote memories. In this study, we examined whether more concrete cues could elicit specificity in his autobiographical memory. It was found that the richness of his autobiographical memory under the condition with probes was significantly higher than condition without probes, although Y.K.'s performance on recalling autobiographical memory was inferior to that of control subjects under both conditions. These results and our previous finding

Haloperidol antagonism of cue-elicited cocaine craving.

BACKGROUND: Studies of cocaine-dependent subjects have shown that re-exposure to environmental cues previously associated with cocaine use produces a strong conditioned response characterised by autonomic hyperarousal and increases in subjective measures of cocaine craving. METHODS: To evaluate the role of dopamine release by such cues, 20 cocaine-dependent inpatients were randomised in a single-dose, crossover, placebo-controlled design, to haloperidol (4 mg by mouth) and placebo. Plasma homovanillic acid (HVA, a dopamine metabolite), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol were ass

Lexical and prosodic cues in the comprehension of relative certainty.

This study examined the development of children's comprehension of the use of intonation and belief verbs to mark the relative certainty with which a speaker makes a statement. Subjects were presented with a task in which they had to guess the location of an object hidden in one of two boxes over a series of trials. As clues to location, the children were presented with contrasting pairs of statements by two puppets. In the first experiment with 30 children at each of three, four, five and six years of age, statements in each pair differed either with respect to the belief term included - know

A case of bulimia successfully treated by cue exposure.

In the present case-study, a 22-year-old female patient with a 7-year history of bulimia nervosa was treated by cue-exposure. During cue-exposure sessions the relationship between CS (stimuli associated with binge-eating behaviour) and UCS (the sensations related to the intake of binge food) was broken. As predicted, the patients' craving for food declined within as well as between cue exposure sessions and a radical decrease in the frequency of binge-eating persisted for at least nine months. Although during the therapy no explicit attention was paid to the patient's low mood and irrational s

Nascent Extracellular Matrix Converts Biomaterial Cues into Cell Fate Decisions.

Hydrogels serve as powerful models for investigating cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. While chemical modifications are routinely used to tune hydrogel properties, it remains unclear whether these modifications mediate cell fate. Previous work has shown that cells deposit newly synthesized (nascent) ECM at the cell-hydrogel interface. Here, we demonstrate that this nascent ECM interface regulates how cells interpret chemical modifications. Using hydrogels with varied chemical modifications, we isolated the effects of chemical modification on nascent ECM and cell fate. Nascent ECM d

Clinical Cues for the Early Diagnosis of Transthyretin-Related Polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The estimated prevalence of hereditary transthyretin-related familial amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) and the small number of known patients in Germany indicate that many patients with TTR-FAP remain undiagnosed, and may instead be classified as "idiopathic." The aim of this study was to identify biomarkers for detecting TTR-FAP among a cohort of patients with idiopathic polyneuropathy (PNP). METHODS: Clinical evaluations (including the Neuropathy Impairment Score and Neuropathy Disability Score), nerve conduction studies (NCSs), quantitative sensory testing, and auto

Linear alopecia in pediatrics: RCM and dermoscopy reveal diagnostic cues.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA), trichotillomania (TM), nevus sebaceous (NS), and linear scleroderma en coup de sabre (LSCS) can all present with a patch of linear alopecia, making diagnosis challenging. The purpose of this study was to combine reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and dermoscopy in the diagnosis of these lesions in children. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with linear alopecia were enrolled, of whom 14 had AA, seven had TM, nine had NS, and six had LSCS. We evaluated the characteristics and distinguishing features of the four conditions using RCM and dermoscopy. RESULTS: T

Conscious and unconscious brain responses to food and cocaine cues.

Visual presentation of appetitive and negative cues triggers fast responses in the human brain. Here we assessed functional MRI (fMRI) responses to food, cocaine, and neutral cues presented at a subliminal ("unconscious", 33 ms) and supraliminal ("conscious", 750 and 3000 ms) level in healthy, cocaine naïve volunteers. Because there is evidence of circadian variability in reward sensitivity, our second aim was to assess diurnal variability in the brain's reactivity to cues. Sixteen participants completed two randomly ordered fMRI sessions (once 9-11 AM and another 5-7 PM). in which food, cocai

Ear transplantations reveal conservation of inner ear afferent pathfinding cues.

Vertebrate inner ear neurons project into the correct brainstem nuclei region before target neurons become postmitotic, or even in their absence. Moreover, afferents from transplanted ears in frogs have been shown to navigate to vestibular nuclei, suggesting that ear afferents use molecular cues to find their target. We performed heterochronic, xenoplastic, and heterotopic transplantations in chickens to investigate whether inner ear afferents are guided by conserved guidance molecules. We show that inner ear afferents can navigate to the vestibular nuclei following a delay in afferent entry a

Can women detect cues to ovulation in other women's faces?

Recent research suggests that men find portraits of ovulatory women more attractive than photographs of the same women taken during the luteal phase. Only few studies have investigated whether the same is true for women. The ovulatory phase matters to men because women around ovulation are most likely to conceive, and might matter to women because fertile women might pose a reproductive threat. In an online study 160 women were shown face pairs, one of which was assimilated to the shape of a late follicular prototype and the other to a luteal prototype, and were asked to indicate which face th

Wiring the Vascular Network with Neural Cues: A CNS Perspective.

The vascular and the nervous system are responsible for oxygen, nutrient, and information transfer and thereby constitute highly important communication systems in higher organisms. These functional similarities are reflected at the anatomical, cellular, and molecular levels, where common developmental principles and mutual crosstalks have evolved to coordinate their action. This resemblance of the two systems at different levels of complexity has been termed the "neurovascular link." Most of the evidence demonstrating neurovascular interactions derives from studies outside the CNS and from th
