Genetic and morphological polymorphisms of Aedes scapularis (Diptera: Culicidae), vector of filariae and arboviruses.

BACKGROUND: Aedes scapularis is a neotropical mosquito that is competent to vector viruses and filariae. It is reputed to be highly morphologically and genetically polymorphic, facts that have raised questions about whether it is a single taxonomic entity. In the last five decades, authors have posed the hypothesis that it could actually be a species complex under incipient speciation. Due to its epidemiological importance, its taxonomic status should be determined with confidence. AIM AND METHOD: Our objective was to investigate more deeply the polymorphism of Ae. scapularis to detect any ev

Population structuring of the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) on a microgeographic scale.

Aedes albopictus is an invasive mosquito species that has spread globally and can transmit several arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The species was first reported in Brazil in 1986 and since then has been found in 24 of the 27 Brazilian states, often in peri-urban environments close to highly urbanized areas. To date, population genetics of this important mosquito in areas in the city of São Paulo has not been investigated. In this study, we used 12 microsatellite loci to investigate the microgeographic population genetics of Ae. albopictus, which is present through

Iron and Ferritin Deposition in the Ovarian Tissues of the Yellow Fever Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae).

Dengue, yellow fever, and Zika are viruses transmitted by yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti [Linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae)], to thousands of people each year. Mosquitoes transmit these viruses while consuming a blood meal that is required for oogenesis. Iron, an essential nutrient from the blood meal, is required for egg development. Mosquitoes receive a high iron load in the meal; although iron can be toxic, these animals have developed mechanisms for dealing with this load. Our previous research has shown iron from the blood meal is absorbed in the gut and transported by ferritin, the mai

Occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in different genera of mosquitoes (Culicidae) in Central Europe.

Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. Some stages of the borrelial transmission cycle in ticks (transstadial, feeding and co-feeding) can potentially occur also in insects, particularly in mosquitoes. In the present study, adult as well as larval mosquitoes were collected at 42 different geographical locations throughout Germany. This is the first study, in which German mosquitoes were analyzed for the presence of Borrelia spp. Targeting two specific borrelial genes, flaB and ospA encoding for

[Updated inventory of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of the island of La Réunion, Indian Ocean].

A literature analysis coupled with new entomological surveys conducted between 2009 and 2012 led to changes in the list of mosquito species present on the island of La Réunion. Using morphological criteria, Orthopodomyia arboricollis is replaced by Or. reunionensis. On the basis of morphometrical and genetic criteria, Culex univittatus is replaced by Cx. neavei. Cx. poicilipes, which was already reported missing 40 years ago, has not been found again. Anopheles arabiensis is confirmed as the only species of the Gambiae complex present on the island. Thus, twelve species are currently known. Fo

Establishment and characterization of a cell line from the mosquito Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Diptera: Culicidae).

We established a continuous cell line from the embryo of the mosquito Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (Diptera: Culicidae), a known major vector of the Japanese encephalitis virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) in Asia. The cell line, designated NIID-CTR, was serially subcultured in VP-12 medium supplemented with 10 % heat-inactivated fetal bovine serum (FBS). It continued to grow for more than 60 passages over a 750-d period. The NIID-CTR cell line mainly comprised two morphologically distinct types of cells with adhesive properties: spindle-shaped and round cells. Most of the NIID-CTR

Nocturnal activity of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in a West Nile virus focus in Connecticut.

Six species of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were collected in sufficient numbers for analysis in segregating traps set at 2-h intervals by using CO2 and light as attractants in a West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) focus in Stratford, CT. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov one-sided test for two samples was used to analyze the data. Mosquito activity began shortly before sunset and continued until shortly after sunrise the next morning. All species had geometric means that were significantly higher during the 2-h period shortly after sunset compared with the 2-h collection befo

Effects of temperature on the transmission of west nile virus by Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Culex tarsalis Coquillett females were infected with the NY99 strain of West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) and then incubated under constant temperatures of 10-30 degrees C. At selected time intervals, transmission was attempted using an in vitro capillary tube assay. The median time from imbibing an infectious bloodmeal until infected females transmitted WNV (median extrinsic incubation period, EIP50) was estimated by probit analysis. By regressing the EIP rate (inverse of EIP50) as a function of temperature from 14 to 30 degrees C, the EIP was estimated to require 1

New findings on the male reproductive system and spermatozoa of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is one of the most important arbovirus vectors, characterized by its widespread distribution and exceptional reproductive capacity. This study reexamines the male reproductive system (MRS) of this species, focusing on its morphology throughout post-embryonic development and the structure of its spermatozoa. METHODS: We analyzed the MRS of A. aegypti in the larval L4, pupal, and adult stages using bright-field light microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Spermatozoa measurements were made using the ImageJ software. RESULT

Trends in insecticide resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Ghana: a systematic review.

Malaria continues to be a major public health issue in Ghana, contributing significantly to hospital outpatient visits. Vector control remains central to malaria prevention; however, the growing resistance of malaria vectors to insecticides presents a major obstacle to control and elimination efforts. This review examined the evolution of insecticide resistance in Ghana from 2001 to 2024, summarising resistance mechanisms across the country's bioclimatic zones to inform evidence-based vector control strategies aligned with Ghana's malaria elimination goals. A systematic literature search was c

Biological and behavioral features and colonization of the sylvatic mosquito Sabethes identicus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes of the genus Sabethes are exclusively sylvatic species occurring in Central and South Americas, where they play a role in the transmission of arbovirus. Sabethes identicus, a common bamboo-breeder species, has been found naturally infected with yellow fever virus. Our study aimed to describe biological and behavioral features of Sa. identicus in the laboratory, as well as establish and standardize an isolated colony for experimental assays. We tested different larval densities and evaluated larval and pupal development time, oviposition behavior, egg production, and longevity. We al

Description of the mitogenome and phylogeny of Aedes spp. (Diptera: Culicidae) from the Amazon region.

The genus Aedes (Diptera: Culicidae) includes species of great epidemiological relevance, particularly involved in transmission cycles of leading arboviruses in the Brazilian Amazon region, such as the Zika virus (ZIKV), Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow fever virus (YFV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). We report here the first putatively complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genomes of Brazilian populations of the species Aedes albopictus, Aedes scapularis and Aedes serratus. The sequences obtained showed an average length of 14,947 bp, comprising 37 functional subunits, typical in animal mitoch

Diversity and Molecular Characterization of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Selected Ecological Regions in Kenya.

Mosquitoes play a predominant role as leading agents in the spread of vector-borne diseases and the consequent mortality in humans. Despite reports on increase of new and recurrent mosquito borne-disease outbreaks such as chikungunya, dengue fever and Rift Valley fever in Kenya, little is known about the genetic characteristics and diversity of the vector species that have been incriminated in transmission of disease pathogens. In this study,  mosquito species were collected from Kisumu city, Kilifi town and Nairobi city and we determined their genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships.

Molecular Detection of Haemosporidian Parasites of Birds in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Kuwait.

A molecular surveillance of haemosporidian parasites from 19,521 Culex pipiens (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) from Kuwait detected 2 pools with a unique Haemoproteus ( Haemoproteus) sp. (Haemospororida: Haemoproteidae) most likely parasitizing columbiform birds and probably representing contaminated blood meals or aborted infections in mosquitoes. Haemoproteus spp. have been previously reported in Kuwait based on microscopic examination of avian blood smears. This paper reports on molecular detection and subgenus-level identification of a novel Haemoproteus ( Haemoproteus) sp. Mosquitoes are not kn

Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) as a potential vector of endemic and exotic arboviruses in Australia.

In 2005, established populations of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) were discovered in the Torres Strait, the region that separates Papua New Guinea from northern Australia. This increased the potential for this species to be introduced to mainland Australia. Because it is an arbovirus vector elsewhere, we undertook laboratory-based infection and transmission experiments to determine the potential for Ae. albopictus from the Torres Strait to become infected with and transmit the four major Australian endemic arboviruses--Murray Valley encephalitis virus, West Nile virus Kunjin strain (WNV(KUN)), Ross
