[Impaired visual perception in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy; a clinical diagnosis based on sequential computerized axial tomography (author's transl)].

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a viral illness affecting principally cerebral white matter of patients, who have diminished immunologic resistance. A patient is presented, whose initial complaint was blurred vision. Relentless progression over a period of seven months to left hemianopsia, prosopagnosia, alexia with agraphia and eventually cortical blindness was observed. Accompanying the visual impairment was a steady deterioration of mental function. Sequential computerized axial tomography defined low density lesions in the occipital white matter with sparing of the cort

Within-Host Evolution of Simian Arteriviruses in Crab-Eating Macaques.

UNLABELLED: Simian arteriviruses are a diverse clade of viruses infecting captive and wild nonhuman primates. We recently reported that Kibale red colobus virus 1 (KRCV-1) causes a mild and self-limiting disease in experimentally infected crab-eating macaques, while simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) causes lethal viral hemorrhagic fever. Here we characterize how these viruses evolved during replication in cell culture and in experimentally infected macaques. During passage in cell culture, 68 substitutions that were localized in open reading frames (ORFs) likely associated with host cell e

Can Deep Learning Identify Early Chinese Ceramics Using Only 2D Images?

Study of early Chinese ceramics is crucial for understanding cultural, economic, and technological developments in Chinese history. With the evolving deep learning techniques, one urgent question would be, whether we can identify early Chinese ceramics by a simple 2D image without further domain knowledge. This work collected a highly diverse dataset for ancient Chinese ceramics from 15 dynasties, with 4 representative glaze colors and 15 shape types. We studied the performance of five state-of-the-art neural networks on two identification tasks: ceramic visual feature recognition and early Ch

Coevolution of marine phytoplankton and Alteromonas bacteria in response to pCO2 and coculture.

As a result of human activity, Earth's atmosphere and climate are changing at an unprecedented pace. Models based on short-term experiments predict major changes will occur in marine phytoplankton communities in the future ocean, but rarely consider how evolution or interactions with other microbes may influence these changes. Here, we experimentally evolved several phytoplankton in coculture with a heterotrophic bacterium, Alteromonas sp. EZ55, under either present-day or predicted future pCO2 conditions. Growth rates of phytoplankton generally increased over time under both conditions, but o

Study on GIS-based suitability evaluation of the landscape environment of celebrity former residences in Huanggang.

Celebrity former residences, as cultural carriers shaped by historical evolution, embody profound cultural significance and hold immeasurable historical, social, political, and economic value. Grounded in the theories of human settlement science, settlement geography, and landscape ecology, this study takes the preserved celebrity former residences in Huanggang City as its research objects. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and adopting a geographical perspective, eight geographical evaluation factors were selected in ArcGIS to represent topography, hydrology, ecology, and geomorpholo

Extensive right-sided infectious endocarditis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rare cause of infectious endocarditis. Most cases have an acute and aggressive evolution, with a high mortality rate. We report the case of a 36-year-old man, with a history of unrepaired ventricular septal defect, who came to the emergency department with fever, cough and asthenia with 3 months of evolution. Blood cultures were positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae Echocardiogram showed large vegetation on septum, free wall and outflow tract of the right ventricle. Thoracic CT revealed septic pulmonary embolism. Antimicrobial therapy and surgical treatment was pe

Biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is associated with an unfavorable evolution after surgery for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyposis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether biofilm-forming capacity of bacteria demonstrated in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has an impact on persistence of the disease following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHOD: Thirty-one bacterial strains recovered from 19 patients with CRS at least 1 year post-ESS. Evolution of disease was assessed by questionnaire and endoscopy as favorable or unfavorable. The bacteria were cultured on a 96-well culture plaque and a semi-quantitative method using crystal violet to quantify biofilm production was used. RESULTS: Twenty-two of 31 samples produced a biofilm thi

Innovation, life history and social networks in human evolution.

There is a famous puzzle about the first 3 million years of archaeologically visible human technological history. The pace of change, of innovation and its uptake, is extraordinarily slow. In particular, the famous handaxes of the Acheulian technological tradition first appeared about 1.7 Ma, and persisted with little change until about 800 ka, perhaps even longer. In this paper, I will offer an explanation of that stasis based in the life history and network characteristics that we infer (on phylogenetic grounds) to have characterized earlier human species. The core ideas are that (i) especia

[Thousands of years of human-dog relationship].

During recent years, much progress has been made in understanding the origin and evolution of the dog. Thanks to the collaboration between zooarchaeology, genomics and paleogenetics, researchers were able to hypothesize scenarios regarding the origins of the canine lineages present in Europe at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene. Research has also shown a correlation between human and canine migration across time and space, highlighting a strong relationship between man and his best friend. This proximity between the two species is also illustrated by the adaptation o

Dependent personality disorder: a critical review.

Dependent personality disorder (DPD) has evolved from an abstract idea rooted in a historic and psychoanalytic context to a codified diagnosis in the DSM-IV-TR. This comprehensive review paper chronicles the evolution of DPD through each version of the DSM. Major topics relevant to the disorder are also investigated, including gender and cultural considerations, stability and manifestations of DPD across different developmental stages, comorbidity issues, and others. The purpose of this review is to provide a broad yet comprehensive examination of the complex angles of maladaptive dependency a

Reflections on crisis burials related to past plague epidemics.

Drawing its etymology from the Latin pestis (curse), plague, over the centuries, has been more dreaded by humankind than any other epidemic. The Apocalypse had recognized plague as the archetypal divine curse, 'the power to kill over a fourth of the earth'. Plague is thus a particular topic of study, insofar that it is one of the rare epidemics that has had recurrent major consequences on demography and human societies. Its highly transmissible nature, the brutality of its action, its high pathogenicity, marked by strong lethality and great swiftness, and the complete absence of treatment opti

From natural theology to the extended synthesis: Historical milestones and conceptual expansions in evolutionary biology.

This article explores the historical development of evolutionary biology-from Natural Theology to the Modern Synthesis (MS)-and the ongoing debate around the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES). Over the past 2,500 years, evolutionary thinking has emerged from the interplay between empirical discoveries and dominant philosophical paradigms. Beginning with Aristotle and Saint Augustine, we trace how Darwin and Wallace introduced a scientific framework grounded in natural mechanisms. In the early 20th century, the MS unified Mendelian genetics and Darwinian selection, forming a gene-centered m

[Planning for the Possible in Healthcare: From PEIMAF to the Management of the Unknown.].

This paper examines the evolution of healthcare planning in light of the increasing complexity of contemporary emergencies, which are characterized by high levels of uncertainty and the frequent absence of established interpretative models. Starting from the historical role of Hospital Emergency Plans for Mass Casualty Incidents (PEIMAF), the article highlights the limitations of approaches based solely on known scenarios and proposes a conceptual shift toward managing the unknown. It outlines the need to broaden the operational meaning of PEIMAF, extending it to all types of patients and tran

Homo imitans? Seven reasons why imitation couldn't possibly be associative.

Many comparative and developmental psychologists believe that we are Homo imitans; humans are more skilled and prolific imitators than other animals, because we have a special, inborn 'intermodal matching' mechanism that integrates representations of others with representations of the self. In contrast, the associative sequence learning (ASL) model suggests that human infants learn to imitate using mechanisms that they share with other animals, and the rich resources provided by their sociocultural environments. This article answers seven objections to the ASL model: (i) it presents evidence t

Evolutionary theory and social diversity are essential for understanding the developmental origins of human social cognition and attachment.

Bard et al. rightly call out Western-centric bias to champion Worldwide, in-Situ, Local and Diverse developmental research. Yet this inclusivity must be grounded in evolutionary theory to model development. Comparative evidence strengthens accounts of shared intentionality and attachment. Integrating within-species variation through WILD with between-species variation engaging evolutionary perspectives will offer more robust explanations of universal and diverse developmental pathways.

Titration of numbers of human-derived Mycobacterium leprae required to progressively oxidize 14C-palmitic acid and release 14CO2.

Mycobacterium leprae was isolated from skin-punch biopsies of 2 untreated lepromatous leprosy patients. The bacteria were enumerated, diluted 10-fold and cultured in Middlebrook 7H9 medium supplemented with albumin, dextrose, catalase and 14C-palmitic acid. The cultures were incubated at 33 degrees C in a modified Buddemeyer radiorespiratory detection vessel. Those cultures containing at least 10(7) mycobacteria demonstrated a progressive evolution of 14CO2.

Viral syncytia evolve to resist interferon.

SARS-CoV-2, like many viruses, generates syncytia but the role of syncytia formation in viral evolution remains unknown. Using SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) replacement vesicular stomatitis (VSV), we show that S-mediated syncytia impair the antiviral effects of interferons in cultured cells, human lung cell cultures, and hACE2 transgenic mice. Amino acid substitutions that modulate syncytia formation in Delta- and Omicron-encoded S have parallel effects on viral interferon resistance. S-mediated syncytia compromise antibody-mediated virus neutralization in cultured cells. We recapitulate

OvAd1, a Novel, Potent, and Selective Chimeric Oncolytic Virus Developed for Ovarian Cancer by 3D-Directed Evolution.

Effective therapeutics for ovarian cancer continue to be urgently needed, particularly for chemotherapy-resistant cases. Here we present both a 3D-Matrigel culture-based expansion of our directed evolution method for generation of oncolytic virotherapies and two promising ovarian-cancer targeted oncolytic viruses, OvAd1 and OvAd2. OvAd1 was developed using Matrigel cell cultures, whereas OvAd2 was developed in parallel using traditional monolayer tissue culture methods. Both viruses are potent against a panel of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines and are attenuated on normal cells in
