Factors Influencing Cyanoacrylate Tissue Adhesive Outcomes for Corneal Thinning and Perforation.

Background and Objectives: To report the outcomes of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (CTA) in patients with corneal perforations and thinning. Materials and Methods: A retrospective interventional study of 83 eyes treated with CTA for corneal thinning or perforation at a single institution between 2010 and 2020. Primary endpoints leading to CTA failure, visual acuity, and surgical outcomes were evaluated. Results: At presentation, 55 (66%) had frank perforations and 28 (34%) had thinning or desmetocele. Univariate analysis showed that only multiple CTA applications were associated with CTA failu

[Adverse events and complications following cyanoacrylate adhesive closure of varicose veins].

BACKGROUND: Cyanoacrylate adhesive closure is currently considered to be an alternative to thermal ablation of varicose veins. It emerged as a natural step towards minimally invasive surgical treatment of incompetent saphenous veins. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the safety of cyanoacrylate adhesive closure in treatment of patients with varicose veins based on two-year experience. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between July 2019 and July 2021, cyanoacrylate adhesive closure was performed in a total of 457 patients (634 limbs and 725 venous trunks). The inclusion criteria were as

Use of cyanoacrylate glue for the sutureless securement of epicutaneo-caval catheters in neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Epicutaneo-caval catheters (ECC) are pivotal for drug and fluid infusion in neonates. Given the intrinsic importance of the catheter for the patients' health and the need to avoid stressful and painful procedures on premature or critically ill newborns with fragile and poor vein asset, it is clearly necessary an accurate bundle for ECC insertion and management to avoid complications that may lead to non-elective ECC removal. Among others, dislodgment is an acknowledged complication, and conventionally adopted fixing devices seem alone unsatisfying in relation to ECC securement.

Skin hypersensitivity following application of tissue adhesive (2-octyl cyanoacrylate).

Tissue adhesives are commonly used for skin closure in both surgical and nonsurgical specialties. Although they are very well tolerated, tissue adhesives can induce a localized allergic response in 0.5% to 14% of patients. Allergic response can result in wound dehiscence, patient discomfort, increased healing time, and suboptimal esthetic results. We present two cases of allergic reaction to anterior neck incisions following topical application of tissue adhesives. The patients were managed with local wound care, steroid administration, and one with subsequent revision surgery. Clinicians who

Acute pericarditis: A rare complication of gastric variceal obturation with cyanoacrylate glue.

Endoscopic obturation by cyanoacrylate glue is currently the treatment of reference of gastric varices bleeding in patients with portal hypertension with a good efficacy for bleeding control and secondary prophylaxis. However, several adverse events related to this treatment have been described including immediate rebleeding and glue embolism. Here we present a case of gastric variceal obturation by cyanoacrylate inducing an acute pericarditis due to glue embolism in mediastinal, pericardial and phrenic veins that was managed conservatively. We also discussed pathophysiological explanations an

Free skin micrografts with cyanoacrylate as outpatient treatment for venous leg ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: The present study describes an ambulatory, free skin micrograft technique with cyanoacrylate as a coadjuvant venous leg ulcer (VLU) healing strategy and its outcomes after one month. METHODS: This prospective study involved Comprehensive Classification System for Chronic Venous Disorders (CEAP) stage C6 patients with good granulation tissue and negative culture results, consecutively recruited in January 2017 in the Hospital Clinico San Carlos. A skin micrograft was harvested from the anterior surface of the patient's thigh with a 0.4cm punch (0.12cm2). The graft was adhered to the

2-octyl cyanoacrylate hypospadias repair dressing: a retrospective, controlled comparison.

INTRODUCTION: 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (OC) has been shown to be a viable option for usage following standard circumcision but data on its utilization following hypospadias repair is limited. Both OC and a standard waterproof transparent dressing (WD) are used following hypospadias repair at our children's hospital. Our hypothesis is that patients with distal hypospadias repair using OC for surgical dressing have similar outcomes as compared to patients with WD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed evaluating all patients with distal hypospadias repair during a 2 year perio

Cyanoacrylate Associated Foreign Body Granulomatous Gastritis: A Report of Three Cases.

Granulomas are rarely seen in gastric biopsies mostly as an involvement of granulomatous diseases like sarcoidosis, Crohn's disease, infections, neoplasms, and vasculitis. Here, we claim cyanoacrylate as a foreign body type granuloma-causing agent in the stomach after vascular embolisation. We present cyanoacrylate associated gastric changes of three cases: two endoscopic biopsies and one gastric resection. In two cases, cyanoacrylate associated ulcers and granulomatous inflammation were observed in gastric mucosal biopsies following endoscopic examination after 7 months and 6 years of the glu

Evaluating the use of octyl-2-cyanoacrylate in unilateral cleft lip repair.

BACKGROUND: Facial cosmetic results are one of the most concerning issues for the parents who get their children operated for cleft lip. Moreover, the postoperative care of the surgical site, the discomfort associated with the suture removal, and additional visit for suture removal are other reasons which encourages one to use any new technologies that may replace the need for suture placement. In this study, we used octyl-2-cyanoacrylate, a tissue adhesive which offers a viable alternative to traditional techniques without compromising optimal wound closure. OBJECTIVE: To perform a comprehen

Octyl-2-cyanoacrylate adhesive for skin closure: eight years experience.

UNLABELLED: Cyanoacrylate skin adhesive is increasingly used to ensure and stabilize wound closures. One of the documented favorable effects of these glues is to limit the risk of a surgical site infection by physically isolating the wound. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2005 to January 2013, 900 patients requiring surgical treatment in the Structure of Plastic Surgery of the University of Sienna were enrolled for the study and divided in two groups; 450 patients treated with glue versus 450 controls. RESULTS: The cohort of patients treated with glue had lower incidence of wound infectio

Efficacy and safety of endoscopic prophylactic treatment with undiluted cyanoacrylate for gastric varices.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of undiluted N-butyl-2 cyanoacrylate plus methacryloxysulfolane (NBCM) as a prophylactic treatment for gastric varices (GV) bleeding. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at a single tertiary-care teaching hospital between October 2009 and March 2013. Patients with portal hypertension (PH) and GV, with no active gastrointestinal bleeding, were enrolled in primary prophylactic treatment with NBCM injection without lipiodol dilution. Initial diagnosis of GV was based on endoscopy and confirmed with endosonography (EUS); the same procedure was us

Application of cyanoacrylate in difficult-to-arrest acute non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding.

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common medical emergency. Although endoscopic treatment is effective in controlling non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding, in cases of persistent bleeding radiological or surgical interventions are required. Application of cyanoacrylate for treatment of difficult-to-arrest non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding is poorly investigated. We describe patients in whom cyanoacrylate for acute non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding was used to stop the bleeding after failure of conventional endoscopic treatment. Five patients were treated with cyanoacrylate

Use of 2-Octyl-Cyanoacrylate in surgical closing of Postparotidectomy salivary fistulas.

A salivary fistula is one of possible postoperative complications in the surgery of parotid gland tumors. We present three cases of postparotidectomy salivary fistulas, successfully treated by surgical access using 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate while closing the skin layer. The previous treatment of these cases by other therapeutic options did not give satisfactory results. In a 5-year follow-up period there were no signs of fistulas relapses. The surgical access with use of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate can be one of therapeutic options for the closing of postparotidectomy salivary fistulas, especially in ca

Suture-free anastomosis of the colon. Experimental comparison of two cyanoacrylate adhesives.

BACKGROUND: We explored the potential of two cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives for constructing colonic anastomoses. METHOD: The study involved 12 female domestic pigs. The animals were divided into two equal groups. In both groups, the sigmoid colon was transected. An intestinal anastomosis was constructed with a modified circular stapler (all staples were withdrawn) and cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives. Glubran 2 was used in group A and Dermabond was applied in group B. Fourteen days after the first operation, a follow-up surgery was performed in both groups. The glued section of the colon was r
