Simulating focal demyelinating neuropathies: membrane property abnormalities.

Membrane properties such as potentials (intracellular, extracellular, electrotonic) and axonal excitability indices (strength-duration and charge-duration curves, strength-duration time constants, rheobasic currents, recovery cycles) can now be measured in healthy subjects and patients with demyelinating neuropathies. They are regarded here in two cases of simultaneously reduced paranodal seal resistance and myelin lamellae in one to three consecutive internodes of human motor nerve fiber. The investigations are performed for 70 and 96% myelin reduction values. The first value is not sufficien

Motor-maps, navigation and implicit space representation in the hippocampus.

Multiple sensory-motor maps located in the brainstem and the cortex are involved in spatial orientation. Guiding movements of eyes, head, neck and arms they provide an approximately linear relation between target distance and motor response. This involves especially the superior colliculus in the brainstem and the parietal cortex. There, the natural frame of reference follows from the retinal representation of the environment. A model of navigation is presented that is based on the modulation of activity in those sensory-motor maps. The actual mechanism chosen was gain-field modulation, a proc

Identification of the head-neck complex in response to trunk horizontal vibration.

A method is proposed for identifying the head-neck complex (HNC) in the seated human body when it is exposed to the trunk horizontal (fore-and-aft) vibration. It is assumed that the HNC only has the anteroposterior (flexion/extension) motion in the sagittal plane. An electrohydraulic vibrator is used as a source of vibration. To generate the trunk horizontal vibration, the trunk of the seated subject is fixed to the seatback. The subjects are exposed to the random vibration at a magnitude of 1.60 ms(-2) rms (root-mean-square) for 50 s. The coherence and frequency response function are then obt

Prehension synergies during nonvertical grasping, II: Modeling and optimization.

This study examines various optimization criteria as potential sources of constraints that eliminate (or at least reduce the degree of) mechanical redundancy in prehension. A model of nonvertical grasping mimicking the experimental conditions of Pataky et al. (current issue) was developed and numerically optimized. Several cost functions compared well with experimental data including energylike functions, entropylike functions, and a ''motor command'' function. A tissue deformation function failed to predict finger forces. In the prehension literature, the ''safety margin'' (SM) measure has be

A model of desynchronizing deep brain stimulation with a demand-controlled coordinated reset of neural subpopulations.

The coordinated reset of neural subpopulations is introduced as an effectively desynchronizing stimulation technique. For this, short sequences of high-frequency pulse trains are administered at different sites in a coordinated way. Desynchronization is easily maintained by performing a coordinated reset with demand-controlled timing or by periodically administering resetting high-frequency pulse trains of demand-controlled length. Unlike previously developed methods, this novel approach is robust against variations of model parameters and does not require time-consuming calibration. The novel

A coupled oscillator model of disordered interlimb coordination in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Coordination between the left and right limbs during cyclic movements, which can be characterized by the amplitude of each limb's oscillatory movement and relative phase, is impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). A pedaling exercise on an ergometer in a recent clinical study revealed several types of coordination disorder in PD patients. These include an irregular and burst-like amplitude modulation with intermittent changes in its relative phase, a typical sign of chaotic behavior in nonlinear dynamical systems. This clinical observation leads us to hypothesize that emergence of

Neural network simulations of the primate oculomotor system IV. A distributed bilateral stochastic model of the neural integrator of the vertical saccadic system.

The present report examines the performance of a distributed bi-directional neural network that simulates the vertical velocity to position integrator of the primate brain. Consistent with anatomy and physiology, its units receive stochastically weighted input from vertical medium-lead burst neurons. Also consistent with anatomy, units belonging to integrators with opposite on-directions (up or down) are interconnected via the posterior commissure (again in a stochastically weighted manner) and they can be excitatory or inhibitory. To demonstrate that integration can be a one-step process, the

Pathological tremors as diffusional processes.

Two types of pathological tremors, essential and Parkinsonian, are studied using dynamical systems theory. It is shown that pathological tremors can be characterized as diffusional processes. The time-scale range for the diffusional scaling law to be valid starts from about one to several tens of the mean oscillation period. This time-scale range contrasts sharply with the predictable time scale for deterministic chaos, which is usually only a small fraction of the mean oscillation period. The diffusions in pathological tremors are usually anomalous. A number of quantities are designed to char

Understanding finger coordination through analysis of the structure of force variability.

Most common motor acts involve highly redundant effector systems. Understanding how such systems are controlled by the nervous system is a long-standing scientific challenge. Most proposals for solving this problem are based on the assumption that a particular solution, which optimizes additional constraints, is selected by the nervous system out of the many possible solutions. This study attempts to address this question in the context of coordinating individual finger forces to produce a controlled total force oscillation between 5% and 35% of each subject's maximum force of voluntary contra

A central pattern generator to control a pyloric-based system.

A central pattern generator (CPG) is built to control a mechanical device (plant) inspired by the pyloric chamber of the lobster. Conductance-based models are used to construct the neurons of the CPG. The plant has an associated function that measures the amount of food flowing through it per unit of time. We search for the best set of solutions that give a high positive flow of food in the maximization function. The plant is symmetric and the model neurons are identical to avoid any bias in the space of solutions. We find that the solution is not unique and that three neurons are sufficient t

Modeling observed chaotic oscillations in bursting neurons: the role of calcium dynamics and IP3.

Chaotic bursting has been recorded in synaptically isolated neurons of the pyloric central pattern generating (CPG) circuit in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion. Conductance-based models of pyloric neurons typically fail to reproduce the observed irregular behavior in either voltage time series or state-space trajectories. Recent suggestions of Chay [Biol Cybern 75: 419-431] indicate that chaotic bursting patterns can be generated by model neurons that couple membrane currents to the nonlinear dynamics of intracellular calcium storage and release. Accordingly, we have built a two-compartment

A model of induced coupled movements in the human body: a case study.

We present a case study of involuntary motion in one part of the body induced by a voluntary motion in another part. The case investigated was that of a steady-state motion of the fingers at various frequencies, which induced a similar kind of motion in the legs. These phenomena were observed in a subject practicing sphincter gymnastics, a physical therapy method in which repetitive motion of different muscles is exercised, and is known to induce motions in other muscles of the body. We show that a linear model, for which we give an experimental transfer function and demonstrate its validity,

Does the brain use sliding variables for the control of movements?

Delays in the transmission of sensory and motor information prevent errors from being instantaneously available to the central nervous system (CNS) and can reduce the stability of a closed-loop control strategy. On the other hand, the use of a pure feedforward control (inverse dynamics) requires a perfect knowledge of the dynamic behavior of the body and of manipulated objects. Sensory feedback is essential both to accommodate unexpected errors and events and to compensate for uncertainties about the dynamics of the body. Experimental observations concerning the control of posture, gaze and li

Respiratory influences on non-linear dynamics of heart rate variability in humans.

The goal of our study was to determine whether evidence for chaos in heart rate variability (HRV) can be observed when the respiratory input to the autonomic controller of heart rate is forced by the deterministic pattern associated with periodic breathing. We simultaneously recorded, in supine healthy volunteers, RR intervals and breathing volumes for 20 to 30 min (1024 data point series) during three protocols: rest (control), fixed breathing (15 breath/min) and voluntary periodic breathing (3 breaths with 2 s inspiration and 2 s expiration followed by an 8 s breath hold). On both the RR int

Modeling inhibition of type II units in the dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Type II units in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) are characterized by vigorous but nonmonotonic responses to best frequency tones as a function of sound pressure level, and relatively weak responses to noise. A model of DCN neural circuitry was used to explore two hypothetical mechanisms by which neurons may be endowed with type II unit response properties. Both mechanisms assume that type II units receive excitatory input from auditory nerve (AN) fibers and inhibitory input from an unspecified class of cochlear nucleus interneurons that also receive excitatory AN input. The first mechanism,

The effects of morphine on the relationship between fetal EEG, breathing and blood pressure signals using fast wavelet transform.

In this study, we introduce the fast wavelet transform (WT) as a method for investigating the effects of morphine on the electroencephalogram (EEG), respiratory activity and blood pressure in fetal lambs. Morphine was infused intravenously at 25 mg/h. The EEG, respiratory activity and blood pressure signals were analyzed using WT. We performed wavelet decomposition for five sets of parameters D2j where -1 < j < -5. The five series WTs represent the detail signal bandwidths: 1, 16-32 Hz; 2, 8-16 Hz; 3, 4-8 Hz; 4, 2-4 Hz; 5, 1-2 Hz. Before injection of the high-dose morphine, power in the EEG wa

Computation of frequency-to-spatial transform by olfactory bulb glomeruli.

A physiological simulation of 2.5% of the input and inhibitory neurons and 25% of the primary mitral/tufted cells in a single mammalian olfactory bulb glomerulus was constructed. This physiological simulation used the integrate-and-fire paradigm with realistic activation curves and synaptic delays. The dendritic integration incorporated non-linear interactive effects of individual cell excitatory and inhibitory post-synaptic potentials (PSPs) from both axodendritic and dendro-dendritic synaptic contacts. Refractory periods for granule-cell inhibition of mitral/tufted cell activity lead to rela

Neural modeling of intrinsic and spike-discharge properties of cochlear nucleus neurons.

The purpose of this study was to develop neurobiologically plausible models to account for the response properties of several types of cochlear nucleus neurons. Three cell types--the bushy cells, stellate cells, and fusiform cells--were selected because useful data from intracellular recordings were available for these cell types, and because these three cell types exhibit distinct contrasts in their neuronal signal coding strategies. Stellate cells have primarily linear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, but both bushy and fusiform cells have highly non-linear I-V characteristics. In ligh

On ringing limits of the auditory periphery.

In classical hearing theory frequency and time have been treated as nearly independent acoustical dimensions. In this paper the interaction between temporal and spectral aspects is studied. An important determinant in this respect is the filtering of auditory stimuli in the cochlea. A view of auditory filtering that is balanced in frequency and time is obtained from the 'reverse-correlation function', abbreviated: revcor function. This function is derived from the response of an auditory-nerve fibre to a white-noise sound stimulus. It is a useful descriptor of peripheral filtering for a wide c

A model of otolith stimulation.

A new model of otolithic stimulation by linear acceleration is presented and compared to previous models, based upon anatomical evidence and on the ability of normal subjects to sense the direction of a linear acceleration vector acting in the coronal plane (roll-tilt perception). There are two basic methods of generating roll-tilt stimuli: 1) tilt-chairs either inside or outside a centrifuge and 2) fixed-chair centrifuges. The present model is based on consideration of the probable otoconial displacement produced by these two different methods of stimulation and the model incorporates a major
