A facile synthetic route for the preparation of N-protected γ-amino β-keto esters from amino aldehydes and ethyl diazoacetate is described. The two component coupling is facilitated by tin(II) chloride followed by semipinacol rearrangement leading to the product in quantitative yield. The reaction is mild, instantaneous and compatible with Boc-, Fmoc- and Cbz-amino protecting groups.

We report the first 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of 1,2-cyclohexadiene, a rarely exploited strained allene. 1,2-Cyclohexadiene is generated in situ under mild conditions and trapped with nitrones to give isoxazolidine products in synthetically useful yields. Lyral 5% pet. was tested in 3245 consecutive patch test patients in 20 departments of dermatology in order (i) to check the diagnostic quality of this patch test preparation, (ii) to examine concomitant reactions to Lyral and fragrance mix (FM), and (iii) to assess the frequency of contact allergy to Lyral in an unselected patch test population of German dermatological clinics. 62 patients reacted to Lyral, i.e. 1.9%. The effect of two herbicides (paraquat and 2,4-dichlorophenoxybutyric acid) and two fungicides (mancozeb and captafol) was studied on the growth of Flagellospora penicillioides, Lunulospora curvula and Phalangispora constricta using the poisoned-food technique. The pesticides did not produce any inhibition of growth at concentrations up to 5 mg/l. The required concentration to bring about total inhibition of growth varied among the chemicals and the cultures. The herbicides produced a slight enhancement of culture growth at concentrations ranging from 1 to 25 mg/l.

The mutagenicity of a series of 13 epoxide compounds was studied using a bacterial plate assay system. The histidine-dependent tester strains TA98 (for frameshift mutagens) and TA100 (for base-pair substitution mutagens) of Salmonella typhimurium were used. New chiral phosphorus-olefin hybrid ligands derived from the rigid "privileged" l-proline have been conveniently prepared and applied in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric arylation of electron-deficient olefins with arylboronic acids at room temperature; this reaction provides the desired products in excellent yields and high enantioselectivities. BACKGROUND: Peel oil from citrus fruits consists of R-(+)-limonene, which is one of the most commonly used fragrance materials in technical products and in fine fragrances. This substance forms allergenic oxidation products during handling and storage.
OBJECTIVE: We wanted to study the frequency of allergic reactions to oxidized R-(+)-limonene in patients with dermatitis and find a suitable test preparation.
METHOD: Patch testing with oxidized R-(+)-limonene was performed on 2273 patients at 4 dermatology clinics in Europe.

Captafol is a common cause of dermatitis amongst workers in the timber industry. In a survey of 14 timber treatment plants 23% of 133 workers exposed to captafol gave a history suggestive of occupationally induced dermatitis. Although allergic dermatitis can occur, irritant dermatitis is far more common. Attention to plant and personal hygiene will reduce the prevalence of captafol dermatitis significantly. Recommendations on how to achieve this are made. "The ultimate end...is not knowledge, but action. To be half right on time may be more important than to obtain the whole truth too late."

Xiguajiang (XGJ) is one kind of Chinese traditionally fermented soybean food. The aim of this study was to identify core bacterial communities and volatile compounds and explore their relationships in XGJ samples obtained from different manufacturers. A chromatographic separation method for 27 fragrances in cosmetics and perfume raw materials was developed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A weak polar capillary column and electron impact ion source were used in the GC-MS analysis, with methanol as the extraction solvent. The limits of detection were 1.2, 15, and 15 mg/kg for musk xylene, hydroxycitronellal, and hydroxyisohexyl-3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde, respectively, and 3.0 mg/kg for the other 24 fragrances. The calibration line of the 27 fragrances presented a good relationship with correlation coefficients ≥ 0.996.

The relative amount of chromium excreted in rat bile after injection of Cr-III is much less than after injection of Cr-VI, about 0.1% and from 6-8% during 5 hours respectively, for corresponding dose levels. The liver to bile ratio was 50-100 for Cr-III injection, for Cr-VI the ratio was 2-3. With doses up to 18 mumol Cr/kg, only Cr-III was found in bile even after injection of Cr-VI. Glutathione depletion of the liver with cyclohexene oxide decreased chromium excretion in bile.
