Patients with end-stage congestive heart failure are at elevated risk for harm when extreme storms threaten and strike their communities. Individuals with compromised heart function require customized hurricane protection and preparedness approaches. We provide mitigation strategies for providers and their teams, as well as the patients themselves to ensure their safety and uninterrupted access to healthcare resources and quality care during hurricane impact and in the aftermath.

BACKGROUND: The Reiwa First Year East Japan Typhoon of 2019 caused a torrential flood in Japan. In Nagano City, a large area was flooded due to the collapse of the Chikuma River embankment. After large-scale disasters, an increase in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events has been reported on account of the stressful conditions. However, few reports of disaster-related diseases associated with flood damage have been described. Thus, our aim was to elucidate the effect of floods on the incidences of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in Nagano City.
METHODS: The Shinshu Assessment

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck the State of Texas, and became the first Category 4 hurricane to strike the USA since 2005. Approximately 178 cm of rain fell over Texas during a seven-day period, with sustained winds of 209 km/h. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requested the State of Texas to administer a temporary housing programme called the Direct Housing Mission. This was administered by FEMA by the Texas General Land Office (GLO) with technical and financial support from FEMA. As the first state to run this programme, the GLO has captured lessons learned and a way forward

Coral reef habitats and associated fish communities can be severely impacted by physical disturbances such as storms and cyclones, which can dramatically reduce live coral cover. However, rapid coral recolonisation and growth can lead to short-term recovery of both coral and fish assemblages. Here we examine the impact of a category 4 cyclone at the Whitsunday Islands (Cyclone Debbie in 2017). Changes in hard coral cover and the density, species richness and species composition of butterflyfishes and damselfishes were assessed over a 12-year period: 3 surveys prior to the cyclone (2012, 2014 a

This paper introduces the Reindeer Cyclone Optimization Algorithm (RCOA), a novel metaheuristic optimization technique inspired by the survival behavior of reindeer during predator attacks in formation cyclonic storms. RCOA imitates the defense-centric cooperative behavior of reindeer, where individuals cluster together to withstand external threats. This behavior is analogous to the optimization process where exploration (global search for exploring new areas) and exploitation (local refinement to copy or learn from neighbor in cyclonic form) are carefully balanced. The algorithm has been ext

The coastal district of Bangladesh is susceptible to cyclones, which cause significant damage to infrastructure, economy, and social structures every year. The importance of protecting lives and property in these vulnerable areas is a top priority, especially in times of cyclones and storm surges. Therefore, the identification of potentially suitable shelter locations is essential for disaster risk resilience planning and implementation in the coastal regions. In this context, our research focuses on Barguna, which has witnessed severe damage from previous cyclones over the last several decade

The intensity and frequency of tropical cyclones (TC) are on the rise due to climate change, resulting in severe damage to coastal regions. Hence, the mitigation of socioeconomic and environmental consequences of cyclones has attained paramount importance in the recent years. In this study, the rapid impact of a very severe cyclonic storm "Titli" on land cover (LC) changes were evaluated using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and high-resolution Sentinel-2 data. The cyclonic event caused substantial modifications in land use and land cover with nearly 46% decrease in dense

The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua (RACCN) is one of the most vulnerable areas to tropical cyclones (TCs), a condition exacerbated by climate change and internal structural disparities. Despite its historical exposure to TCs, significant gaps remain in the systematic analysis of its vulnerability. This research assesses the vulnerability levels of RACCN municipalities to TCs by constructing a Tropical Cyclone Vulnerability Index (VItc), and a municipal typology based on exposure, susceptibility, and adaptive capacity factors. Twelve indicators were selected, normalized, a

The study investigates the role of tropical cyclones (TCs) in dissolved oxygen (DO) distributions and Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) variability in the northern Indian Ocean (IO) for 2019-2022. The analyses revealed under the influence TCs the thickness of OMZ varied between ∼610-753 m and ∼ 922-1179 m at different locations in Bay of Bengal (BoB) and Arabian Sea (AS) respectively. The OMZ thickness during TC Sitrang was >740 m unlike during TCs Fani and Yaas which occurred in post monsoon season. Strong near-surface wind stress on right side of TC track causes thickening of OMZ after the cyclone.

Coastal regions are densely populated and economically vital but highly exposed to multiple hazard drivers, including cyclones, storm surges, high tides, and intense rainfall. The IPCC AR6 (2021) emphasizes the need to assess coastal hazards as multi-driver compound hazard events. India, with its extensive coastline of ∼11,098 km, is particularly prone to these drivers, necessitating a comprehensive multi-driver coastal flood hazard assessment. This study adopts an indicator-based approach employing Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) with three objective

Category 3 Hurricane John on September 24, 2024, with strong winds (> 190 km/h) and heavy rainfall-induced flooding, caused devastation to the coastal municipalities of Guerrero, Mexico. Sentinel-2A images were used to identify the impacts on vegetation canopy, land use/land cover (LULC) characteristics, and moisture levels in vegetation. An increase in dead plants of 90.2 km2 and a decrease in healthy plants by 265.43 km2 were observed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. Most of the agricultural land, barren land, and low-lying pastureland were flooded (724.8 km2), and high impa

Aiming at the problem that the current hydrocyclone separator is affected by multiple structural parameters and there is interaction between the multiple structural parameters, it is difficult to determine the optimal structure. Taking the new axial inlet hydrocyclone separator as the research object, a fast parametric optimization method based on response surface optimization method is proposed. The overflow outlet diameter, overflow tube depth and small cone length, which have significant influence on the separation efficiency of the axial inlet hydrocyclone separator, are selected as the op

Climate change is increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme weather events across the globe. Understanding the capacity for ecological communities to withstand and recover from such events is critical. Typhoons are extreme weather events that are expected to broadly homogenize ecological dynamics through structural damage to vegetation and longer-term effects of salinization. Given their unpredictable nature, monitoring ecological responses to typhoons is challenging, particularly for mobile animals such as birds. Here, we report spatially variable ecological responses to ty

To study the environmental responses of tropical cyclones (TCs) in continental shelf regions, TCs passing over the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea (YBS) during 2002-2020 were investigated, with a special focus on how competition between ocean thermal structure and TC characteristics modulates ocean surface changes. The spatial distributions of the climatic mixed layer depth (MLD), accumulated wind forcing power index (WPi), accumulated sea surface temperature (SST) changes and accumulated chlorophyll (Chl-a) changes in the YBS were calculated. The linear regressions indicate that both the TC-induced

Intense disturbances such as hurricanes may drastically affect ecosystems, producing both acute and long-term changes along coastlines. By disrupting human activities (e.g., fishing), hurricanes can provide an opportunity to quantify the effects of these activities on coastal ecosystems. We performed predator-exclusion experiments on oyster reefs in 2016, one-year before a category-4 hurricane ("Harvey") and again in 2018 one-year post-hurricane where the storm made landfall. Additionally, we examined 8 years (2011-2018) of fisheries-independent data to gauge how fishing pressure and fish popu

Mechanisms underlying the effects of ecological disturbance on aquatic ecosystems remain uncertain in subtropical regions. Here, we used a proxy-based approach to explore the community dynamics of testate amoebae (Arcellinida and Euglyphida) in two subtropical deep reservoirs (Tingxi and Shidou) in Xiamen, southeastern China, over a three-year period. Specifically, we employed drought and typhoon events recorded by weather station as proxies for ecological disturbance and chlorophyll-a estimated through fluorometry as a proxy for testate amoeba food. We addressed three questions: (1) Does typh

Freshwater fishes are among the most biodiverse vertebrate groups and among the most threatened by anthropogenic activities. Many occur in small and geographically restricted populations that are increasingly subject to catastrophic events (hurricanes, wildfires, extreme floods and droughts), but it has rarely been possible to assess the impacts of such events. Here we document the decline and recovery of a regularly monitored, small shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) population in the Chipola River, Florida following a catastrophic hurricane disturbance. The Chipola River population has the
