Diarrhea in the returned traveler is a common problem that can be caused by a number of different pathogens. A history of the patient's travel and exposures, the duration of illness, the response to prior treatment, and the clinical syndrome can help to establish a good etiologic differential diagnosis on which further therapy can be based. Many of these patients can be treated empirically with antibiotics, either a fluoroquinolone or azithromycin, without further microbiologic evaluation. Those patients with severe or persistent disease or comorbid illnesses, or those who have failed empiric

Intestinal opportunistic infections are often caused by unicellular parasites. Individuals with decreased immunity are particularly susceptible to infection by said microorganisms, and when they are infected, diarrhea can be the main clinical manifestation. However, intestinal parasites have rarely been taken into account in intestinal disorders. In our study, an investigation was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal micro-pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Blastocystis, and microsporidia, in hospitalized patients with different immunological statuses. The study at han

In early June 2023, the Alabama Department of Public Health identified five laboratory-confirmed cyclosporiasis case reports with a common patient exposure of eating at one Mexican-style restaurant. Common signs of cyclosporiasis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and loss of appetite. Although most illnesses are self-limited, antibiotic treatment can prevent relapsing illness. Onset of illness for the initial five patients occurred during May 26-30. An outbreak investigation was initiated on June 7. Routine case investigations and case finding through the restaurant's food delivery s

Foodborne diseases represent a major health problem in the United States. The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) of CDC's Emerging Infections Program monitors cases of laboratory-diagnosed infection caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food in 10 U.S. sites.* This report summarizes preliminary 2018 data and changes since 2015. During 2018, FoodNet identified 25,606 infections, 5,893 hospitalizations, and 120 deaths. The incidence of most infections is increasing, including those caused by Campylobacter and Salmonella, which might be partially attributabl

Diarrheal diseases caused by intestinal protozoan parasites are a major food-borne public health problem across the world. Vegetables and fruits provide important nutrients and minerals, but are also common sources of some food-borne human pathogenic microorganisms. The contamination of raw vegetables and fruits with human pathogenic parasites are now a global public health threat, despite the health benefits of these foods in non-pharmacological prophylaxes against diseases. A large number of reports have documented the contamination of vegetables or fruits with human pathogenic microorganism

This study investigated the presence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi as a possible cause of chronic diarrhea in Haitian patients attending the GHESKIO AIDS clinic in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Coccidian oocysts were found by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the stools of 58/74 patients with chronic diarrhea and included the following agents: 45 (60%) Cryptosporidium spp., 27 (34%) Cyclospora cayetanensis, and 11 (15%) Isospora belli. Four patients (5.5%) were co-infected with E. bieneusi and one (1.4%) had E. bieneusi alone. The PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method made it possi

Several parasites are responsible for life threatening infections in immunocompromised patients. They occur in patients with a profound immunodeficiency affecting the T-cell mediated immunity. In AIDS patients, opportunistic infections are highly prevalent in those with CD4 lymphocyte counts < 200/mm3. Most of these parasites are intracellular protozoa. Severe parasitic infections in immunocompromised hosts either results from the reactivation of a previously acquired infection, such as toxoplasmosis, or from a primary acquired infection which manifests more severely because of the immune defe

To determine the dynamics of dissemination of the different forms of enteric sporozoa in the groundwater of Mbankomo, a study was carried out from August 2018 to July 2019. The physico-chemical analyzes were carried out both in the field and in the hydrobiology and environment laboratory of the University of Yaoundé I. The observation of protozoan oocysts was carried out after application of the Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Physico-chemical analysis showed slightly acidic water (6.32 ± 0.43 UC), with high turbidity (31.30 ± 23.56 mg/l). Biological analysis indicated the presence of protozoan oocyst

A coproparasitological study was carried out on 67 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients admitted at the Institute of Tropical Medicine 'Pedro Kouri'. The results were compared with 136 HIV-seronegative patients (control group) who were also hospitalised in the same period. In both groups monoparasitism was more prevalent than polyparasitism and intestinal protozoa were more prevalent than helminths. At least one intestinal parasite was found in 34 (51%) of the 67 AIDS patients and in 65 (48%) of the control group patients. Intestinal coccidia were only detected in AIDS patients;

Many microorganisms previously unrecognized as food-borne or harmful are emerging as human pathogens transmitted by food. This is a result of recent acquisition of key virulence factors, detection by newly developed isolation procedures, or astute detective-like laboratory skills of microbiologists. Six microbial pathogens, including Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Arcobacter butzleri, Helicobacter pylori, Cryptosporidium parvum, and Cyclospora, have become recognized as significant causes of human illness. Although the ecology and epidemiology of illness caused

There are very few data on the prevalence of coccidian enteric parasites among low-income adults hospitalized in Chennai, India. Stool samples from 200 patients were screened for selected parasites, enteric bacterial pathogens, and other protozoa over a 3-month period. The study identified 42 (21%) Cryptosporidium, 36 (18%) V. cholerae, 17 (9%) Salmonella, 12 (6%) Isospora, six (3%) helminths, five (3%) Shigella, one (1%) Cyclospora, one (1%) other protozoan, and 0% V. parahaemolyticus cases. Co-infection was present in 21 patients. Cryptosporidium was detected in 17 (81%) of co-infected patie

Intestinal parasites continue to pose a significant public health burden in low- and middle-income countries and are increasingly recognized in developed regions. Traditional diagnostic methods, primarily based on microscopy, remain widely used despite limitations in sensitivity and taxonomic resolution. In this exploratory study, we applied a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based metataxonomic approach, integrated with classical phylogenetic methods, to characterize intestinal parasites in rural Colombian populations. We compare its performance with conventional microscopy, focusing on both

A quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay with melt curve analysis (qPCR-MCA) was applied for the detection of protozoan oocysts in 501 human fecal samples collected in Dominican Republic. Samples were subjected to qPCR using universal coccidia primers targeting 18S rDNA to detect oocysts followed by MCA to identify oocyst species based on amplicon melting temperature. Putative positive samples were also tested by conventional PCR and microscopy. Cystoisospora belli (×3), Cryptosporidium parvum (×3), Cryptosporidium hominis (×5), Cryptosporidium meleagridis (×1), Cryptosporidium canis (×1

All the human and animal laboratory reports of zoonoses sent to Health Protection Scotland between 1993 and 2002 were identified. There were 24,946 reports from veterinary laboratories, and 94,718 (20 per cent) of the 468,214 reports from medical laboratories were considered to be zoonotic. The most common reports of zoonoses from people were Campylobacter, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium and Giardia species and Escherichia coli o157. The most common reports of zoonoses from animals were Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, Chlamydia and Campylobacter species and Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis. For

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parasites and other infections have many effects on the gastrointestinal tract of individuals who are immunocompromised. Few reviews focus on parasitic infections, which are covered here.
RECENT FINDINGS: The review first examines recent advances in our understanding of the taxonomy, diagnosis and treatment of pathogens such as cryptosporidia, cyclospora, isospora and microsporidia, which are recognized causes of diarrhoea in the immunocompromised, and discusses possible links between amoebiasis and HIV. The complex interactions of both intact and abnormal immune systems wi

A national training project in the diagnosis of intestinal parasites was conducted in 1997. An initial national course was followed respectively by courses in the Central, Eastern, and Western Provinces. Our results showed that Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and leukocytes showed a significantly lower percentage of errors after the training than before (p < 0.01). The same occurred with Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar and Chilomastix mesnilii (p < 0.05). Among the helminths, Taenia spp., Fasciola hepatica, and hookworm showed significantly fewer errors after the training (p <

OBJECTIVE: To identify the level of contamination with thermotolerant coliforms (ThC), intestinal helminth eggs and protozoan parasites in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) cultivated in a wastewater-fed lake in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
METHODS: The investigation was carried out from July 2004 to May 2005 in Boeng Cheung Ek lake, a main recipient of wastewater from the city of Phnom Penh. Water spinach samples were collected near two wastewater entry points in the northern part of the lake and near a wastewater exit point in the southern part of the lake, where water is discharged from the lake i

Intestinal parasitism was studied in children of Trujillo (Peru) to create a prevention and control program. Fecal samples of 489 children were examined. The general prevalence of intestinal parasitosis was found to be 68%. The most frequent pathogenic enteroparasites were Giardia lamblia (26.4%), Cyclospora cayetanensis (13%), Hymenolepis nana (2%), Hymenolepis diminuta (1.6%), and Cryptosporidium spp. (1%). All these parasites appeared both in diarrheic and nondiarrheic children, except Cryptosporidium, which invariably caused diarrhea. Multiple parasitism was frequent, 45.6% of the children
