Sensory deafferentation and olfactory bulb morphology in the zebrafish and related species.

The zebrafish, Danio rerio, has become an important model species for examining olfactory system structure and function, yet little is known about developmental changes in olfactory bulb morphology from embryo to adult. The present study examined both normal growth and the effects of deafferentation on the bulb from hatching to adulthood. In young animals, the bulb is small relative to body size and has a higher percentage of its volume occupied by incoming olfactory nerve fibers. Young animals are also more affected by sensory deafferentation. Olfactory rosette removal resulted in more than 5

Synaptic organization in the teleost olfactory bulb.

Some aspects of the synaptic organization in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish were investigated morphologically by light and high voltage electron microscopy of Golgi-impregnated material, combined Golgi-electron microscopy and electron microscopy of the serial thin sections. In this paper we have analyzed two particular synaptic areas in the glomerular layer (and the superficial part of the plexiform layer), that is, the glomerular area and the nest (N), and five types of neurons participating in these two areas. The glomerular area consists mainly of olfactory nerve terminals (ON), mitral

Ruffed cell: a new type of neuron with a distinctive initial unmyelinated portion of the axon in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish (Carassius auratus). III. Three-dimensional structure of the ruffed cell dendrite.

The three-dimensional structure of the ruffed cell dendrite in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish (Carassius auratus) was studied by means of light and high-voltage electron microscopy of Golgi-impregnated material, combined Golgi-electron microscopy, and electron microscopy of serial thin sections. Ruffed cell dendrites ramify in the glomerular area with tufted branching patterns. They give rise to many appendages of various shapes and sizes: sheetlike processes, fingerlike projections, or small tuftlike appendages. These appendages, singly or together, appear to entwine or cover other neuron

Non-simultaneous auditory masking in the goldfish, Carassius auratus.

Auditory thresholds were determined for 500 HZ pure tone pulses of 15, 25 and 50 ms duration presented leading, following or simultaneously with noise pulses of 50 or 250 ms duration. Masking by the noise decreased: (i) with an increase in tone pulse duration; (ii) with a shortening of the noise pulse duration; and (iii) as the interval between tone and noise pulses was increased from 0 to 350 ms. The effect of the noise was independent of whether the noise led or followed the pure tone. It is suggested that the most significant factor affecting masking was the duration of the interval between

Abnormality in body curvature of Cyprinus carpio after injection of anaesthetics.

Abnormalities in the body curvatures were noticed in Cyprinus carpio after the injection of anaesthetics, viz. paraldehyde, tertiary butyl alcohol and butanol. These abnormalities occurred behind the dorsal fin and progressively developed over a period of four months. The abnormalities affect the locomotion and speed of swimming of the fish and appear to be due to toxic effects of the anaesthetics.

Distribution of some endocrine cells in the digestive tract of Van fish (Alburnus tarichi Güldenstädt, 1814) during reproductive migration.

The Van fish (Alburnus tarichi Güldenstädt, 1814) is an endemic species of the Lake Van basin, belonging to the Cyprinidae family and exhibiting an anadromous life cycle. Although feeding and growth occur in Lake Van, spawning takes place in freshwater streams entering the lake between April and July, influenced by water temperature. These distinct habitats lead to differences in feeding behaviour and nutritional intake. Fish obtain a limited amount of food from the fresh water in which they breed. This study aimed to characterize the distribution of endocrine cells in the digestive tract of V

Polymeric immunoglobulin receptor in dojo loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus): Molecular characterization and expression analysis in response to bacterial and parasitic challenge.

The polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) is an essential component of the mucosal immune system in jawed vertebrates including teleost fish, which mediate transepithelial transport of secretory immunoglobulins (sIgs) to protect organisms against environmental pathogens. In this study, we firstly cloned and identified the pIgR from dojo loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus). The full-length cDNA of Ma-pIgR was of 1145 bp, containing an open reading frame (ORF) of 1101 bp encoded a predicted protein of 336 amino acids. The structure of Ma-pIgR is comprised of a signal peptide, a transmembrane r

An N-targeting real-time PCR strategy for the accurate detection of spring viremia of carp virus.

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is a highly pathogenic agent of several economically important Cyprinidae fish species. Currently, there are no effective vaccines or drugs for this virus, and prevention of the disease mostly relies on prompt diagnosis. Previously, nested RT-PCR and RT-qPCR detection methods based on the glycoprotein gene G have been developed. However, the high genetic diversity of the G gene seriously limits the reliability of those methods. Compared with the G gene, phylogenetic analyses indicate that the nucleoprotein gene N is more conserved. Furthermore, studies in ot

Identification of genes involved in the development of Weberian apparatus in rohu, Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822), as revealed by comparative transcriptome analyses.

Ostariophysi has a history of successful adaptation to freshwater environments due to the evolution of a unique morphological structure, i.e. Weberian apparatus (WA). This structure transfers sound waves from the swim bladder to the inner ear by forming a physical linkage that leads to enhanced hearing sensitivity. However, there are very few reports on genes specifically linked to this modified structure in fish. In this study, we compared Weberian ossicles, the modified vertebrae, and unmodified vertebrae transcriptomes of representative species from ostariophysi and non-ostariophysi by mRNA

PFAS Mixture Composition and Internal Exposure Profiles Shape Biological Responses under Field-Realistic Exposure.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occur as complex mixtures, yet mixture-dependent biological effects under environmentally realistic exposure conditions remain poorly understood. We conducted multiyear (2018, 2019, 2021) continuous-flow, field-based exposures of male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) using a low-PFAS reference well (REF; sum of measured PFAS (∑PFAS) 0.1-0.2 μg L-1) and PFAS-contaminated groundwater from a fire-training area (FTA) at Joint Base Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Dilution treatments enabled separation of concentration and mixture effects. Groundwater from we

Climate-driven physiological changes in Mahseer (Tor tambroides) juveniles.

Climate change, characterized by rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and increasing global temperatures, poses significant threats to aquatic ecosystems. This study examines the impact of elevated CO2 concentrations and water temperature on the growth, survival, and hematological condition of mahseer juveniles. A controlled experiment was conducted to analyze growth parameters, including specific growth rate (SGR), relative growth rate (RGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and hematological indices across varying CO2 and temperature conditions. The findings indicate that CO2 levels si

Exploring the toxicological and beneficial effects of 4,5,6-Trimethoxy-2,3-diphenyl indole on Labeo rohita fingerlings.

The aim of this research was to examine the potential toxic or beneficial impacts of 4,5,6-Trimethoxy-2,3-diphenyl indole on fingerlings of Labeo rohita when administered in water. The study involved four groups of Labeo rohita fish (n = 40) exposed to varying water-borne concentrations (0.00, 32.08, 48.13 and 96.26 mg/L) of 4,5,6-Trimethoxy-2,3-diphenyl indole over a fourteen day period. The fish were maintained under standard living conditions to minimize stress. Histological examination of the brain and gills revealed abnormal tissue structure only in the high-concentration group. Chronic Cr(VI) exposure-induced biotoxicity involved in liver microbiota-gut axis disruption in Phoxinus lagowskii Dybowski based on multi-omics technologies.

Cr(VI) is widely used in industry and has high toxicity, making it one of the most common environmental pollutants. Long-term exposure to Cr(VI) can cause metabolic disorders and tissue damage. However, the effects of Cr(VI) on liver and gut microbes in fish have rarely been reported. In this study, 240 fish were randomly divided into 3 groups: the control group, low-dose Cr(VI) group (0.5 mg/L), and high-dose Cr(VI) group (2 mg/L). The mechanism by which Cr(VI) affects the enterohepatic axis of common carp was elucidated via multiomic analysis, serology, histomorphology, and physiological and

Embryonic Exposure to Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs) Differentially Induces Cardiotoxicity in Rare Minnow (Gobiocypris rarus).

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) such as triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) were reported to impair cardiac function in fish. However, limited information is available regarding their cardiotoxic mechanisms. Using rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) as a model, we found that both TPHP and TDCIPP exposures decreased heart rate at 96 h postfertilization (hpf) in embryos. Atropine (an mAChR antagonist) can significantly attenuate the bradycardia caused by TPHP, but only marginally attenuated in TDCIPP treatment, suggesting that TDCIPP-induced bradyc

Endocrine Disruption Is Reduced but Still Widespread in Wild Roach (Rutilus rutilus) Living in English Rivers.

Endocrine disruption of wild fish, primarily resulting in the feminization of males, has been reported in English river sites for several decades. Estrogenic activity emanating from wastewater treatment works (WwTW) has been conclusively demonstrated to be the main driver of these feminized phenotypes. Here, we revisit 10 English river sites previously surveyed in the late 1990s and early 2000s to assess how the frequency and severity of feminization now compare with the historical surveys. In the contemporary assessment, 60% of the sites revisited still showed endocrine disruption at the tiss

Aquatic toxicity of hydroquinone and catechol following metal oxide treatment to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas.

Metal oxides comprise a large group of chemicals used in water treatment to adsorb organic pollutants. The ability of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3) to reduce the chronic toxicity of (phenolic) C6H6(OH)2 isomers, namely hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CAT) to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas (less than 24 h-old) were investigated. The toxic endpoints following metal oxide treatment were compared to endpoints of untreated CAT and HQ. In chronic toxicity testing, HQ resulted in greater toxicity than CAT for both test organisms; the median lethal concentrations (LC
