Conspiracy Theories, Trust in Science, and Knowledge during the Third Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Cyprus.

Conspiracy theories flourish during periods of crisis. One way to counteract the believability of conspiracy theories is trust in science and knowledge about the "perceived threat", such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A total of 363 adults from Cyprus were recruited via convenience and snowball sampling methods. The data were collected via an internet-based questionnaire that examined participants' belief in 17 conspiracy theory statements, trust in science and scientists, knowledge about the symptoms and the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, phobic anxiety, hostility, somatization, and personality tr

Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria on Healthcare Workers' Uniforms in Hospitals and Long-Term Care Facilities in Cyprus.

Healthcare workers' (HCW) clothing has been shown to harbor multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) and may contribute to transmission. The aim of this study was to evaluate presence of MDRB on HCW uniforms in Cyprus. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 9 hospital wards and 7 long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Nicosia, Cyprus, from April-August 2019. Sampling of HCW uniform pockets was conducted at the end of the first shift. Personal hygiene and other habits were recorded during personal interviews. Among 140 sampled HCW (69 from hospitals, 71 from LTCFs), 37 MDRB were identified, includ

Device-associated infections in the intensive care units of Cyprus: results of the first national incidence study.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) has become an integral part of infection control programs in several countries, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. In contrast, surveillance data on the epidemiology of ICU-acquired infections in Cyprus are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of ICU-acquired infections and to identify areas for improvement in Cypriot hospitals by comparing observed incidence rates with international benchmarks and by specifying the microbiological and antibiotic resistance profiles of infecting organisms.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis associated with Epstein Barr virus and Leishmania donovani coinfection in a child from Cyprus.

We present a case of a 9-month-old girl from Cyprus with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis associated with Epstein Barr virus and Leishmania donovani coinfection. Treatment with liposomal amphotericin B resulted in a dramatic resolution of clinical and laboratory abnormalities. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a coinfection-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and the first clinical report of visceral leishmaniasis infection in Europe by L. donovani.

Maternal multimorbidity and chronic conditions as predictors of preterm birth: A matched case-control study in Cyprus.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading global cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. While individual maternal chronic conditions are established risk factors, the role of maternal multimorbidity remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal multimorbidity and PTB, and to identify chronic conditions associated with the occurrence and severity of PTB. METHODS: A retrospective matched case-control study was conducted at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia, Cyprus. The sample included 978 singleton live births, consisting of 489 preterm c

Molecular characterization of carbapenem resistance and hypervirulence determinants of Klebsiella pneumoniae circulating in a tertiary hospital in Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp) has become a major global public health concern. Infections caused by CR-Kp strains that also possess hypervirulence traits present significant challenges for clinical management and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of β-lactamase genes and hypervirulence-associated markers among clinical CR-Kp isolates collected in Cyprus. METHODS: A total of 96 K. pneumoniae isolates were investigated. Species-level identification and antimicrobial susceptibili

Is the Prevalence of Coronary Artery Anomalies Different in Countries with Small Populations? - A Retrospective Study in Northern Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: Although the prevalence of coronary artery anomalies (CAA) is due to accidental and rare discoveries, it varies between different countries or geographies. CAA are rare congenital disorders having various clinical definitions. Its prevalence varies in angiographic and autopsy series in adult populations and is approximately 1% in average. While the incidence ranges from 0.2% to 5.64% in coronary angiographic (CAG) studies, it is around 0.3% in autopsy series. We aimed to estimate the frequency of CAA in our patient population. METHODS: The coronary angiographic data of 4099 consec

Human intestinal parasites from a latrine in the 12th century Frankish castle of Saranda Kolones in Cyprus.

Saranda Kolones (Forty Columns) at Paphos in Cyprus was a mediaeval concentric castle built after King Richard I of England captured the island in 1191AD, during the Third Crusade. The aim of this research is to determine whether the garrison of the castle was infected by intestinal parasitic helminths (endoparasites). The analysis was undertaken on soil sediments recovered from a latrine inside the castle. The microscopic examination demonstrated the eggs of two species of parasites, the roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura). Control samples were negative, confir

C3 glomerulonephritis/CFHR5 nephropathy is an endemic disease in Cyprus: clinical and molecular findings in 21 families.

Microscopic haematuria is the presenting symptom of several conditions, either heritable or acquired. A well-recognized familial condition is Alport syndrome, either of X-linked or autosomal recessive inheritance, as well as thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN) because of heterozygous collagen IV mutations. Even though microscopic haematuria of TBMN was long considered as a benign disease with excellent prognosis, more recent data suggest that development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and even end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is not a rare finding, perhaps owing to the cofounding role of

Serum Q fever antibodies in Swedish UN soldiers in Cyprus--reflecting a domestic or foreign disease?

Swedish soldiers from 2 battalions serving in Cyprus 1975 and 1976 were tested serologically for Coxiella burnetii phase 2 complement-fixing antibodies. 2.7% were positive. Although none of the seropositive soldiers had been seriously ill abroad, the titers are considered to emanate from an infection in Cyprus as there is no evidence of domestic Q fever from a survey of 1390 Swedes.

Use of corticosteroids to isolate IBR virus from cattle in Cyprus after respiratory disease and ataxia.

An outbreak of ataxia, blindness, respiratory disease and kerato-conjunctivitis occurred in October 1972 in a beef feedlot in Cyprus. Fifteen animals died and 10 that were severely ataxic were slaughtered; many animals became blind. There was no opportunity to isolate virus when the disease was active but in March and October 1973 infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus was isolated from cattle after they had been treated corticosteroids to stimulate virus excretion. It is probable that IBR virus caused the disease. This is the first report of the isolation of IBR virus from cattle in Cy

Non-Markovian dynamics and effective reproduction number in COVID-19: Evidence from Cyprus contact tracing data.

Using contact tracing data provided by the Cyprus Ministry of Health, infection trees for the first four waves of the COVID-19 epidemic are constructed. In these trees, nodes represent infected individuals, while links indicate the direction of transmission between them. For each infection tree of N nodes, the hopcount distribution from the root node to all other nodes is calculated. The empirical distribution is then compared to the hopcount distribution of infection trees generated by a non-Markovian SI process on a complete graph, with Weibull infection times characterized by a shape parame

Wide phenotypic variability in RSPH9-associated primary ciliary dyskinesia: review of a case-series from Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited ciliary motility disorder caused by mutations in at least 40 genes. RSPH9 gene mutations encoding aberrant radial spoke head proteins have been linked with PCD. The clinical spectrum extent of RSPH9 gene mutations remains to date largely unknown. We aimed to describe the diagnostic and clinical phenotype in a case-series of RSPH9-associated PCD. METHODS: We performed whole exome sequencing in suspect patients from Cyprus who on repeated cilia biopsies demonstrated loss of the central pair apparatus on Transmission Electron Microscop

Vitamin D Levels and Uropathogen Distribution in Urinary Tract Infections: A Six-Year Retrospective Study from Cyprus.

Background and Objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent one of the most frequently encountered bacterial infections in clinical practice. Although vitamin D (vit D) is recognised for its immunomodulatory properties, its relationship with the spectrum of uropathogens remains unclear. This study investigated the distribution of UTI-causing pathogens in relation to serum vit D status and demographic variables including age, sex, season, and year of presentation at a tertiary hospital in the Eastern Mediterranean. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was con

Prevalence of Viral and Bacterial Co-Infections in SARS-CoV-2-Positive Individuals in Cyprus 2020-2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on healthcare systems worldwide, with severe consequences on the global economy and society. The clinical presentation of SARS-CoV-2 infection varies widely, ranging from asymptomatic cases to severe disease and death. Coinfection with other respiratory pathogens in SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals may exacerbate symptom severity and lead to poorer clinical outcomes. Background/Objectives: This study is the first to investigate the prevalence of viral and bacterial co-infections in SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals in Cyprus. Methods: A total of 111
