[Clinical experience on 52 patients with interstitial cystitis].

PURPOSE: To examine clinical features of the patients of interstitial cystitis (IC) undergoing hydrodistension at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 52 IC patients who underwent hydrodistension between July 2002 and December 2004. Transurethral coagulation (TUC) of Hunner's ulcer (HU) was subsequently performed for patients with HU (ulcer type). Descriptive statistics of the patients' characteristics and outcomes were provided and compared between ulcer type and nonulcer type IC patients. RESULTS: Of the 52 patients, 44 (85%) were female and 8 were male. Mea

Patient response in a screened population for interstitial cystitis.

The purpose of this study was to screen a general patient population for interstitial cystitis (IC) and to determine the outcome of combination therapy (pentosan polysulfate sodium [PPS] and hydroxyzine) in newly diagnosed patients. Screening for IC symptoms was performed on 3883 patients (>or=18 yr of age). After further evaluation, a diagnosis of IC was made in 160 patients. These patients were subsequently treated with PPS 200 mg twice a day (off-label usage) and hydroxyzine hydrochloride 25 mg nightly for 1 to 12 mo. Clinically meaningful (>or=50%) improvement in IC symptoms, as measured b

[Intravesical instillation of resiniferatoxin for the patients with interstitial cystitis].

Although hydrodistention of the bladder is accepted as the initial treatment for patients with interstitial cystitis (IC), second-line treatment for worsening symptoms is not concretely established. Resiniferatoxin (RTX) desensitizes bladder afferent c-fibers and its intravesical instillation is effective for patients with detrusor overactivity. We studied the clinical relevance of intravesical treatment with RTX for patients with IC. The treatment was performed for 3 patients with incomplete improvement after hydrodistention. All 3 patients were free of bladder pain posttreatment and had slig

A case of interstitial cystitis accompanying Sjögren's syndrome.

A 51-year-old woman with interstitial cystitis was referred for screening of autoimmune disease. She was positive for results of Schirmer and Saxon tests and for ss/A and ss/B antibodies. Autoantibodies to type 3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor were detected in the patient's serum by Western blotting. We diagnosed her as having interstitial cystitis accompanying Sjögren's syndrome. To enable early treatment, interstitial cystitis should be considered when patients with Sjögren's syndrome complain of urinary symptoms.

What is the value of cystoscopy with hydrodistension for interstitial cystitis?

OBJECTIVES: To determine the utility of cystoscopy with hydrodistension for the diagnosis and therapy of interstitial cystitis. Cystoscopy with hydrodistension is the most commonly performed diagnostic test and procedure in patients with interstitial cystitis. METHODS: Eighty-four consecutive patients with interstitial cystitis (68 women and 16 men) were studied retrospectively. The patients underwent history and physical examination, urinalysis, and urine culture and filled in a voiding diary and pain urgency frequency questionnaire. Cystoscopy with hydrodistension was performed in 47 patien

Pain and depression experienced by women with interstitial cystitis.

The goal of this study was to better understand the experience of women suffering from interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic pain condition that has, as of yet, received little attention from psychosocial investigators. Eighty women with IC participated. The results from this study demonstrate that, in addition to frequency of voiding (the hallmark symptom of the disorder), IC sufferers also endure significant pain and depression. Levels of pain experienced by IC patients during their most painful flares exceed levels of pain experienced by other chronic pain patients. Similarly, levels of dep

[Interstitial cystitis in case of primary Sjögren's syndrome].

A 53-year-old woman who had xerostomia for ten years was admitted to our hospital because of refractory lower abdominal pain and pollakisuria of five years duration. Although she had undergone surgical treatments including cholecystectomy, ovarian cystectomy and groin hemiorrhaphy, she still suffered from abdominal symptoms. A diagnosis of interstitial cystitis was confirmed by hydraulic distention during a cystoscopic examination and by histopathological examination of the bladder. Her symptoms disappeared soon after the cystoscopic procedure, which also had a therapeutic effect of interstiti

Interstitial cystitis: women at risk for psychiatric misdiagnosis.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a form of painful bladder disease, characterized by chronic urinary urgency, frequency, and pain without evidence of bacterial infection. Ninety percent of patients with IC are women. Somatization disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis, given most often to women who report a variety of symptoms, such as dysmenorrhea, burning in sex organs, dyspareunia, irregular menstrual periods, and painful urination. Because diagnosis of interstitial cystitis may take many years, health care providers must be alert to the risks of the overdiagnosis of psychiatric problems and the

Interstitial cystitis. An overlooked cause of pelvic pain.

Interstitial cystitis is a disease primarily of young and middle-aged women that is characterized by pelvic pain, urinary frequency, and dyspareunia. Its cause is unknown, but defects in the protective glycosaminoglycan layer of the bladder mucosa may be responsible. The diagnosis is mainly one of exclusion. Cystoscopy reveals characteristic glomerulations in the bladder mucosa. Of the available treatments, the most common are intermittent hydrodilation of the bladder and intermittent intravesical instillation of dimethyl sulfoxide. Other methods and medications are currently under investigati

Phenotype Variability in Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trial Recruitment.

IMPORTANCE: There is a need to understand phenotype-specific therapies for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) at the clinical trial level to move beyond trial-and-error treatment approaches. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to characterize IC/BPS clinical trials that incorporate patient phenotype into the eligibility criteria in accordance with the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines. STUDY DESIGN: Registered IC/BPS clinical trials were identified from ClinicalTrials.gov. Trials were included if they enrolled patients with IC/BPS and addressed pain-re

[Oral therapy for interstitial cystitis: pentosan polysulfate sodium].

INTRODUCTION: It is currently assumed that interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is caused by damage to the glycosaminoglycane layer on the urothelium of the urinary bladder. This layer can be repaired by oral therapy with pentosan polysulfate sodium. The focus of this article is on the history of this drug, its efficacy, its valuation in guidelines and especially the possible correlation with maculopathy. METHODS: Literature research in PubMed and Embase. RESULTS: PPS has a US and European approval for the therapy of IC characterised by glomerulations or a Hunner lesion detected by en

Clinical guidelines for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

The clinical guidelines for interstitial cystitis and related symptomatic conditions were revised by updating our previous guidelines. The current guidelines define interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome as a condition with chronic pelvic pain, pressure or discomfort perceived to be related to the urinary bladder accompanied by other urinary symptoms, such as persistent urge to void or urinary frequency in the absence of confusable diseases. The characteristic symptom complex is collectively referred as hypersensitive bladder symptoms. Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is divide

Association between Chronic Interstitial Cystitis and Herpes Zoster.

OBJECTIVES: Herpes zoster (HZ) infection has been associated with disease burdens such as infection and depression. However, the relationship between chronic interstitial cystitis (CIC) and HZ is unknown. This study investigated HZ risk in patients with CIC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, which is a subset of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, was used in the study. The case cohort consisted of patients with newly diagnosed CIC between 2000 and 2012. Each patient with CIC was matched to four controls by age and index year. All participan

Painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis: treatment options.

Painful bladder syndrome (PBS) and interstitial cystitis (IC) are associated with bladder pain, increased urinary frequency, urgency and reduced quality of life. The cause is still unknown, although there are several possible hypotheses. PBS/IC may significantly impact all areas of a patient's life as they try to manage their symptoms. Treatment options usually involve diet and fluid modifications, oral medications, intravesical therapy or as a last resort, surgery. The bladder is protected by a mucous layer known as the GAG layer and is thought to protect the underlying urothelium from coming

Global concepts of bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis).

BACKGROUND: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS), commonly referred to as "interstitial cystitis", is no longer considered a rare disorder. It may affect up to 2.7% of the adult female population (Ueda et al. in Int J Urol 10:1-70, 2003) with up to 20% of cases occurring in men. METHODS: The last two decades have seen a worldwide effort to try to standardize its nomenclature, definition, diagnosis, and treatment algorithm. The literature has been reviewed. RESULTS: In this article, we will detail current terminology, diagnostic approaches and treatment. Standard therapies will be discussed, and a sec
