Journal of ultrasound in medicine : official journal of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine2008eng
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the diagnostic capabilities of transabdominal sonography performed with newer sonography machines for showing focal bladder wall abnormalities (FBWAs) detected on cystoscopy.
METHODS: One hundred twelve consecutive patients (97 male and 15 female; mean age, 68 years) underwent cystoscopy. Reasons for referral were macroscopic hematuria (44 cases [39%]), surveillance after transurethral resection (56 cases [49.5%]), and incidental sonographic findings (12 cases [11.5%]). One to 2 days before cystoscopy, sonography was carried out by

Automated analysis of cystoscopic images may support consistent characterization of bladder tissue patterns, but reported performance is highly sensitive to patient composition, data partitioning, and evaluation methodology. Objective: This study provides an exploratory comparison of convolutional neural networks, Transformer-based models, and a proposed Local-Global Hybrid Transformer (LGH-Transformer) for four-class bladder tissue image classification. The dataset comprised 1754 frames and used the publicly released 1257/308/189 training-validation-held-out test split. The annotation-defined

While double J (DJ) stenting is common worldwide in the urological procedure, it may associate with severe and catastrophic complications. Penetration of the jejunum and upward migration of double J (DJ) stents during cystoscopic DJ stent procedure are rare complications with few reported cases in the literature. We present a 65-year-old male presented with acute renal failure and peritonitis one week after failed cystoscopic removal of DJ stents. Radiographic investigations showed upward migration of the right DJ stent and a total displacement of the left DJ stent to the peritoneal cavity wit

Urothelial dysfunction may be a key pathomechanism underlying interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). We therefore examined if clinical severity is associated with the extent of urothelial damage as revealed by electron microscopic (EM) analysis of biopsy tissue. One hundred IC/BPS patients were enrolled and 24 patients with stress urinary incontinence served as controls. Clinical symptoms were evaluated by visual analog scale pain score and O'Leary-Sant Symptom score. Bladder biopsies were obtained following cystoscopic hydrodistention. The presence of Hunner's lesions and glome

Three gravid, female, wild Florida cooter turtles (Pseudemys floridana floridana) were evaluated and treated by the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine Turtle Rescue Team as a result of traumatic injuries or infection. As part of medical management, oviposition was induced using oxytocin, which was only partially effective. In all three cases, ectopic eggs were subsequently identified in the urinary bladder by ultrasound and were successfully removed via a minimally invasive cystoscopic-guided technique. One of the three turtles died within several days of the proced

PURPOSE: Endoscopic treatment of large bladder stones via cystoscope is still bothersome, and open cystolithotomy is the preferred method in many centers. To gain more insight into the endoscopic bladder stone management, we aimed to compare the transurethral use of nephroscope and cystoscope randomly.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-three male patients with bladder stones were randomized into two groups, to perform nephroscopic (group 1, n = 22) and cystoscopic (group 2, n = 21) stone fragmentation procedures transurethrally. Combined pneumatic/ultrasonic lithotripsy device was used in both grou

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Haemorrhagic radiation cystitis is a challenging complication of pelvic radiotherapy, with limited high-quality evidence to guide management and no established standard of care. We explored the real-world potential and safety of intravesical RADA16 (PuraStat) for the treatment of persistent severe haematuria secondary to radiation cystitis.
METHODS: This exploratory prospective observational study included consecutive patients with clinically significant haematuria following radiotherapy, treated with intravesical RADA16 across two NHS Trusts. The primary outcome was

CONTEXT.—: Localized amyloidosis of the bladder is rare and often mimics bladder malignancy. It is typically associated with the extracellular deposition of monoclonal light chains, either κ or λ. The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be due to chronic inflammation/cystitis.
OBJECTIVE.—: To highlight the importance of localized urinary bladder amyloidosis as a rare mimicker of urothelial malignancy and elucidate its clinical, histopathologic, and cytopathologic manifestations.
DESIGN.—: Cases of urinary bladder amyloidosis diagnosed during 2000-2023 were retrieved retrospectively from p

OBJECTIVE: To define the relationship between cystoscopic findings, including novel findings such as the hypervascularization, of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and the response to intravesical therapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated cystoscopy findings in patients who had a preliminary diagnosis of BPS/IC. All patients received early intravesical combined therapy (ICT), ie, within 2 hours after hydrodistention. Additionally, ICT was continued according to our protocol. Cystoscopic findings were classified as glomerulations, hypervascularization, and

CASE DESCRIPTION A 4-year-old spayed female Beagle was evaluated because of a 2-month history of intermittent pollakiuria, stranguria, dysuria, and abdominal pain. A diagnosis of bacterial cystitis was initially made, but clinical signs persisted despite appropriate antimicrobial treatment, so the dog was referred for further evaluation and treatment. CLINICAL FINDINGS Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large, thin-walled, cystic structure in the urinary bladder at the level of the expected right ureterovesicular junction that communicated with the uniformly dilated right ureter. Severe righ

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC) and to explore the correlation between periureterally located Hunner lesions and ipsilateral VUR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 344 patients with IC who underwent cystoscopy (March 2012 to July 2013). Among these patients, 25 underwent voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) to check for the presence of VUR. We reviewed the cystoscopy findings (grade and location of Hunner lesions) and the results of VCUG (presence and grade of VUR). The relationship bet

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate multi-institutional outcomes of bulbar urethroplasty utilizing a standardized cystoscopic follow-up protocol.
METHODS: Eight reconstructive surgeons prospectively enrolled urethral stricture patients in a multi-institutional study and performed postoperative cystoscopy at 3 and 12 months. Anatomic failure was defined as the inability to pass a flexible cystoscope without force. Functional failure was defined as the need for a secondary procedure. Men not compliant with the 12-month cystoscopy were called and asked if any interval secondary procedures had been performed.

Flexible cystoscopy is a common procedure in urology, traditionally performed using reusable flexible cystoscopes. However, concerns over sterilization costs, cross-contamination, and logistics have led to interest in single-use disposable cystoscopes. This study compares the cost-effectiveness of reusable versus disposable cystoscopes at a high-volume academic center. A retrospective threshold cost analysis was performed at a tertiary hospital in Singapore in 2022. Costs that were considered included device purchase, reprocessing and maintenance costs. Common procedural-related costs such as

BACKGROUND: Urethral stricture (US) refers to the scarring process involving the corpus spongiosum (spongiofibrosis). Incidence in children is quite low as compared to adults, with anterior urethra (penile and bulbar) being the most common site. Iatrogenic and posttraumatic causes in the US are more frequent than the idiopathic, infective, and inflammatory causes. Either endoscopic internal urethrotomy (IU) (size < 2 cm US) or open reconstructive procedures (size > 2 cm US) are the main treatment options. However, additional therapy, such as the local application of Mitomycin C (MtMC), improve

INTRODUCTION: Foley catheterization is a routine urologic procedure, yet complications may arise, particularly in patients with long-term indwelling catheters.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of iatrogenic ureteral obstruction caused by inadvertent Foley catheter insertion into the right ureter in a 55-year-old male nursing home resident. The condition led to right-sided hydronephrosis and recurrent urinary tract infections. Diagnosis was established using computed tomography, which confirmed the catheter's entry into the ureter, and cystoscopy revealed polypoid lesions around the r
