Leptomeningeal dissemination of low-grade gliomas is an uncommon event. A 43-year old male presented with dizziness, gait ataxia, and diplopia. A nonenhancing lesion in the right cerebellar peduncle was identified, subtotally resected, and diagnosed as a grade II astrocytoma. After one year a nodular spread in the brain and leptomeninges was diagnosed, so the patient started chemotherapy with temozolomide and liposomal cytarabine. BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in treatment and survival rates in pediatric acute leukemias, relapse remains a common reason for treatment failure. Autologous bone marrow transplantation is widely used as late intensification therapy for patients with AML in remission without an HLA identical donor or who are older than 40-45 years. We report our experience in 21 AML patients in 1st or 2nd CR transplanted with a regimen including HD-ARA-C in addition to Cyclophosphamide (CY) and TBI. The median age was 32 years (3-50). BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) have increased risk for developing AML (DS-AMKL), and they usually experience severe therapy-related toxicities compared to non DS-AMKL. Refractory/relapsed disease has very poor outcome, and patients would benefit from novel, less toxic, therapeutic strategies that overcome resistance.
