Cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors, which is a serious threat to human life. However, the etiology of cancer is not entirely clear. Under the action of tumorigenic factors, tissue cells lose normal regulation, resulting in abnormal proliferation and differentiation, so as to form a tumor. Cytokines promote the development of chronic inflammation, which may affect the development of cancer, and Th17 cells are a kind of immune cells which are closely related to the tumor. Therefore, this article focused on the role of Th17 cells and its related cytokines in tumor, which is very im

RA is a complex disease that develops as a series of events often referred to as disease continuum. RA would benefit from novel biomarker development for diagnosis where new biomarkers are still needed (even if progresses have been made with the inclusion of ACPA into the ACR/EULAR 2010 diagnostic criteria) and for prognostic notably in at risk of evolution patients with autoantibody-positive arthralgia. Risk biomarkers for rapid evolution or cardiovascular complications are also highly desirable. Monitoring biomarkers would be useful in predicting relapse. Finally, predictive biomarkers for t

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive spine surgery, particularly lateral lumbar interbody fusion, offers advantages over open surgery, including reduced blood loss and shorter hospital stays. The prone lateral lumbar interbody fusion (PL-LIF) is an evolution of lateral lumbar interbody fusion that enables posterior instrumentation without repositioning, enhances sagittal correction, and may improve operative efficiency. However, concerns remain regarding prolonged psoas retraction and increased radiation exposure. While instrument tracking technologies have improved workflow and reduced radiation in

Immune and inflammatory responses are related to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including neurological diseases in childhood. Cytokines modify the pathogenesis of these diseases. Analyses of cytokines and transcription factor NF-kappa B activation in patients with acute encephalitis, bacterial meningitis, tracheostomy and profound multiple disabilities, and neonatal asphyxia were described. It is important for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases to understand their pathogenesis and severity by analyzing cytokines and NF-kappa B activation.

Inflammatory bone loss is observed in a number of disorders including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoporosis and periodontal disease. Lymphocytes are key components in the onset and exacerbation of autoimmune diseases and the cytokines produced by these cells have a powerful impact on disease progression. Many cytokines implicated in inflammation impact upon osteoclast (OCL) differentiation and function either directly or indirectly by modulating the relative expression of RANKL and OPG. This review highlights the contribution of lymphocyte-derived cytokines to the bone loss observed in RA an

A 220-kDa E. histolytica lectin is capable of downregulating some inflammatory cytokines (IL-5, IL-6, INF-gamma and TNF-alpha) and thus of inducing an overall anti-inflammatory Th-phenotype in leucocytes of selected, perhaps constitutionally predisposed, individuals irrespective of their HLA-DR3 profile (i.e., in this study patients long recovered from amebic abscess of the liver). This probably inhibited cytokine response pattern could increase the risk for developing amebic abscess of the liver in the course of invasive intestinal amebiasis.

The elaboration of cytokines, chemokines and immunomodulatory proteins in the placenta and gestational membranes has been extensively investigated in the context of both normal and abnormal pregnancy and delivery. Patterns of expression of cytokines in the foetal membranes and decidua suggest that inflammatory activation occurs modestly with term labour, but much more robustly in preterm delivery, particularly in the presence of intrauterine infection. Enhanced chemokine expression, particularly evident in deliveries with an infected amniotic cavity, is presumably responsible for recruiting in

Blood vessel growth after birth is limited to two major processes. Angiogenesis is the growth of new capillaries by sprouting or intussusception. The major stimulus for angiogenesis is ischemia. In contrast, arteriogenesis describes the remodeling and growth of collateral arteries from a preexisting arteriolar network. Arteriogenesis is induced after the occlusion of a major artery which induces hemodynamic and mechanical effects on the collateral vessel wall which occur with increasing blood flow velocity due to the low pressure at the reentrant site of the collateral vessel. A variety of dif

Mastocytosis is a rare stem cell disorder characterized by abnormal growth and accumulation of mast cells in one or more organ systems. Clinical heterogeneity is a hallmark of mastocytosis. Recent observations of activating mutations in c-kit may help to understand the abnormal growth of mast cells in mastocytosis. However, this mutation alone does not explain the entire clinical heterogeneity of the disease. Reticulin fibrosis is also commonly associated with systemic mastocytosis. Mast cells are known to be the source of fibrogenic cytokines, including platelet-derived growth factor, transfo

Mast cell hyperplasia is found in different pathologies such as chronic inflammatory processes, fibrotic disorders, wound healing or neoplastic tissue transformation. The functional significance of the accumulation of mast cells in these processes is largely unknown. It is now established that bone marrow-derived mast cell progenitors circulate in peripheral blood and subsequently migrate into the tissue where they undergo final maturation under the influence of local microenvironmental factors. Cytokines are of particular importance for mast cell recruitment, development, and function. Stem c

In vaccines produced in eukaryote cells as well as in commercial medical preparations of leukocyte interferon a number of cytokines such as IL-1beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha have been detected. Among the vaccines examined in this study the highest level of IL-1beta was demonstrated in inactivated hepatitis A vaccine prepared in the green monkey kidney cell line 4647, that of IL-6 in inactivated rabies vaccine produced in Syrian hamster kidney (SHK) cell culture, and that of TNF-alpha in live poliomyelitis vaccine manufactured in VERO cells. A spontaneous and poliovirus-induced capacity of cell cult

Since the last decade, new insights into inflammatory processes have become possible by investigating the pattern of cytokines in acute and chronic sinus diseases. This review aims to update and discuss the findings of in vitro and in vivo studies concerning the role of cytokines in sinusitis and nasal polyposis. The proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6 and the neutrophil-chemoattractant interleukin-8 may play a major role in acute sinusitis, as shown in viral and allergic rhinitis. In chronic sinusitis interleukin-3 dominates the cytokine profiles, giving support to a va

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to look at the serum cytokines profile in newly diagnosed thyrotoxic patients with Graves' disease and to compare their cytokine levels with those of normal control subjects. Furthermore, the levels of T4, being an indicator of the severity of thyrotoxicosis, were also correlated with the Th1/Th2 and proinflammatory cytokines in Graves' disease patients.
METHODS: Serum IFN-gamma (Th1), IL-10 (Th2), inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, TNF-alpha, sCD23 and sIL-2R cytokine levels were measured in 28 patients with Graves' thyrotoxicosis and in 30 normal cont

Topical exposure to a variety of xenobiotics may result in irritant as well as allergic contact dermatitis both in rodents and in humans. Despite their induction by different mechanisms, they cannot be differentiated by macroscopic appearance and, by histological examination they are both generally characterized by a perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrate and capillary hyperpermeability. Recently, cytokines, a family of inducible glycoproteins that play a pivotal role in immune and inflammatory reactions, have been identified as useful tools for differentiation of irritant and allergic conta

Bioassays were developed to detect canine pro-inflammatory cytokines. These enabled characterisation of these cytokines and their isoforms and provided means for their assay in the joints of dogs with different naturally occurring arthropathies. Canine IL-1 was detected by its induction of proliferation of D10(N4)M cell line, whilst IL-6 had a proliferative effect on B9 cell line. TNFalpha had a cytotoxic effect on WEHI 164 (13) cells. Partial purification of the cytokines was achieved by FPLC ion-exchange chromatography and two isoforms of IL-1 were shown, possibly corresponding to IL-1alpha

Most research in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) has focused on characterization of the autoantibodies directed against platelet antigens resulting in enhanced platelet elimination by macrophages. This report summarizes the current knowledge of cytokine pattern found in individuals with ITP. Serum assessment has demonstrated increased levels of interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), while IL-4 was significantly decreased. In addition, thrombopoietin (TPO) has been found in normal levels while IL-11 has been reported to be elevated. These data indicate that ITP is associ

In this review, we discuss two broad approaches we have taken to study the role of cytokines and chemokines in antiviral immunity. Firstly, recombinant vaccinia viruses were engineered to express genes encoding cytokines and chemokines of interest. Potent antiviral activity was mediated by many of these encoded factors, including IL-2, IL-12, IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, CD40L, Mig and Crg-2. In some cases, host defense mechanisms were induced (IL-2, IL-12, Mig and Crg-2), whilst for others, a direct antiviral effect was demonstrated (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and CD40L). In sharp contrast, vector-directe
