Accidental childhood death from diphenhydramine overdosage.

A 15-month-old boy presented to an emergency department with tonic clonic jerking of all extremities and dancing eye movements. A history of instant coffee ingestion was obtained at that time. However, a routine blood analysis and toxicology screen showed a diphenhydramine level of 1.0 mg% (lethal, 0.5 mg%). Generalized tonic clonic seizures continued despite conventional therapy. A continuous thiopental infusion was used to control his seizure activity. This child never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead 7 days postingestion.

Exploring the impact of dance: intersectoral quantitative and qualitative methodological challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations.

UNLABELLED: Dance-based interventions/programs are gaining popularity; however, interventions are rarely explicitly described, including the role of dance facilitators, and their effects can be difficult to measure. METHODS: To address these issues, our intersectoral team collected quantitative and qualitative data. via a non-randomized pre-post study for six dance groups (teenagers with cerebral palsy, children with cerebral visual impairment, adults receiving outpatient physical rehabilitation, adults with Parkinson's disease, women who were formerly unsheltered, and community-dwelling olde

Synergistic effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and a dance movement intervention on mild cognitive impairment: study protocol for a four-arm factorial randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) represents a critical transitional stage between normal cognitive aging and dementia, characterized by a high conversion rate to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Current pharmacological interventions provide limited symptomatic relief and do not alter disease trajectory. Consequently, there is an urgent need for effective, multimodal, non-pharmacological interventions. While repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Dance Movement Intervention (DMI) individually show promise in mitigating cognitive decline, their combined synergistic effects i

Physiotherapy versus placebo or no intervention in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite medical therapies and surgical interventions for Parkinson's disease (PD), patients develop progressive disability. The role of physiotherapy aims to maximise functional ability and minimise secondary complications through movement rehabilitation within a context of education and support for the whole person. The overall aim is to optimise independence, safety and well-being, thereby enhancing quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention compared with no intervention in patients with PD. SEARCH METHODS: We identified relevant tria

When clozapine appears at a dance event….

Objectives: The content of substances sold and consumed as party drugs is often unknown. They may contain inactive, contaminated or unexpected ingredients, and the dosage of the active components may vary considerably. Obviously, these phenomena increase the chances of a wrong or delayed therapy. To illustrate this point, we report 3 cases of clozapine intoxication at a dance event where most likely clozapine tablets were sold as party drugs. Methods: The three cases were part of a prospective toxicology study at a nocturnal indoor dance event. Results: One patient had to be intubated after obst

The meaning of autistic movements.

What is already known?Moving the body in 'stereotyped', 'repetitive', 'ritualised' or 'unusual' ways is part of the criteria for receiving a diagnosis of autism. However, the reasons for these movements and their personal value are not well understood. Certain ways of moving have become part of a disorder, and have received negative judgements, whereas other movements have not. What this paper adds?We searched online blogs for descriptions of movement written by autistic adults, using their preferred language and definitions. The blog authors said that many types of movement attracted negative

[Intensive outpatient group treatment for adolescents with eating disorders].

We present an intensive outpatient group treatment for girls with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder) additionally to/instead of inpatient treatment or individually treatment by psychotherapists. The therapy concept is primarily behaviour therapy oriented, encouraging the self-management-abilities of the patients thereby learning self-determination and responsibility in dealing with their illness. The slow-open group concept provokes group cohesion, solidarity and support among girls, who share similar age-related development-stages and eating disorders.

Can't stop dancing: could it be St. Vitus' dance?

PURPOSE: To inform providers of one of the rare but significant consequences that result from not diagnosing and treating streptococcal pharyngitis: Sydenham's chorea (St. Vitus' dance). DATA SOURCES: Current Internet sources including review articles, informational articles, online medical textbooks, and professional organization Web sites. CONCLUSION: It is vital that each case of streptococcal pharyngitis be treated with appropriate antibiotic therapy. Doing so will help prevent the sequelae associated with streptococcal infections, such as acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and Sydenham's chore

Demons, voices and virtual realities in adolescence-an exploration of zeitgeist, culture and cultural complexes.

This paper contrasts two aspects of the adolescent's sojourn in the metaphorical landscape of the borderland. Either this 'dance with death' can prove life-affirming and serve individuation as the intensity of being poised on the cusp between life and death negates numbing dissociation, or it can spiral into madness and suicide when the adolescent gets trapped in a mimetic hall of mirrors. This paper considers both the oscillations between mimesis and alterity, and how culture and cultural complexes may define expressions of distress. It concludes with the question of whether one can-and wheth

Femoral neuropathy due to patellar dislocation in a theatrical and jazz dancer: a case report.

This case report describes a teenage female, high-level modern dancer who suffered multiple left patellar dislocations. Her history is atypical in that after her fifth dislocation, her recovery was hindered secondary to persistent weakness and atrophy of her quadriceps out of proportion to disuse alone. Electrodiagnostic studies and magnetic resonance imaging showed evidence of a subacute femoral neuropathy correlating chronologically with her most recent patellar dislocation. This case suggests that further diagnostic study may be warranted in patients with persistent quadriceps weakness or a
