The neural correlates of risky decision making across short and long runs.

People frequently change their preferences for options of gambles which they play once compared to those they play multiple times. In general, preferences for repeated play gambles are more consistent with the expected values of the options. According to the one-process view, the change in preference is due to a change in the structure of the gamble that is relevant to decision making. According to the two-process view, the change is attributable to a shift in the decision making strategy that is used. To adjudicate between these two theories, we asked participants to choose between gambles pl

Dopaminergic Drug Effects on Probability Weighting during Risky Decision Making.

Dopamine has been associated with risky decision-making, as well as with pathological gambling, a behavioral addiction characterized by excessive risk-taking behavior. However, the specific mechanisms through which dopamine might act to foster risk-taking and pathological gambling remain elusive. Here we test the hypothesis that this might be achieved, in part, via modulation of subjective probability weighting during decision making. Human healthy controls (n = 21) and pathological gamblers (n = 16) played a decision-making task involving choices between sure monetary options and risky gamble

Group decision-making in medical school competency committees: a multi-institutional ethnographic study.

PURPOSE: Competency committees use group decision-making procedures to determine when learners may advance in their training. These committees have been well-described in graduate medical education (GME) and efforts have explored transferability of this model to undergraduate medical education (UME). Existing research in UME has focused on committee structure and member perspectives, with little examination of decision-making processes. This study explored how UME competency committees use group decision-making to arrive at competency determinations. METHOD: This theory-informed, multi-instit

Cocaine use disorder in females is associated with altered social decision-making: a study with the prisoner's dilemma and the ultimatum game.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cocaine use is associated with cognitive deficits, including poor performance on neuropsychological tasks of memory, executive functions, theory of mind and decision-making. However, the relationship between cocaine use disorder and social decision-making remains unclear. This is particularly relevant given the fact that many cocaine abusers present impairments in social functioning. In this sense, game theory paradigms have been helping to comprehend the behavior of psychiatric patients when they directly engage in social situations, which may better approximate many of th

Supporting effective shared decision-making with people with dementia.

Shared decision-making is fundamental to person-centred dementia care but its practical application is often challenged by time, relationships, people's fluctuating capacity and organisational constraints. This article encourages nurses to reflect on the principles of shared decision-making in the context of dementia care, drawing on micro, meso and macro decision-making levels to illustrate how choices are shaped by personal values, culture, legal frameworks and the care environment. Using theory, a case study and time out activities, the article highlights how nurses can adopt communication

The integrated control of decision and movement vigor.

Decision-making and motor control are closely interdependent processes. It has been proposed that the vigor of decisions and the vigor of movements are jointly controlled to optimize behavior utility. However, recent studies indicate that decision and movement vigor are co-regulated by default, whether or not this benefits behavior utility, and that they can be decoupled if utility is compromised. We propose that the co-regulation of decision and movement vigor occurs through modulation of the signal-to-noise ratio in sensorimotor areas of the brain, while the decoupling of decision from movem

Dissociating the relationship between time perception and decisions to delay gratification.

The ability to forgo an immediate reward in favor of a larger, later one is central to healthy decision-making--yet some people struggle to delay gratification. A prominent theory proposes that people with faster internal clocks experience delays as subjectively longer and more costly, leading them to discount future rewards more steeply. Here, we test this theory's central prediction by asking whether individual differences in time perception can explain individual differences in temporal decision-making. We recruited 226 participants to complete tasks measuring time perception and delay sens

Negotiating uncertainty: Parental decision making about mild and unilateral deafness in infants and young children.

OBJECTIVES: There are a range of clinical uncertainties for managing mild and unilateral deafness in infants, such as whether hearing interventions are effective or even required. This study aimed to explore parental experiences of decision making for their pre-school aged children with mild or unilateral deafness identified through newborn hearing screening. METHODS: Grounded theory methodology was used to develop a theory of parental decision making. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with seventeen parents of children with mild and unilateral deafness age 5 months to 4 years old.

How the Wrist Moves: Wrist Biomechanics and Carpal Theories.

The wrist facilities load transfer from the hand to the forearm in a variety of positions through intricate soft tissue and osseous interactions. Despite substantial research, there is no unifying theory that describes all wrist motion. Understanding the theories of carpal motion is imperative to understand, treat, and rehabilitate wrist pathology, as individual wrists often exhibit characteristics consistent with portions of each theory. The evolution of technology has facilitated more nuanced understanding of the contribution of ligamentous structures, allowing improved surgical decision-mak

Ecologically rational choice and the structure of the environment.

In life, risk is reward and vice versa. Unfortunately, the big rewards people desire are relatively unlikely to occur. This relationship between risk and reward or probabilities and payoffs seems obvious to the financial community and to laypeople alike. Yet theories of decision making have largely ignored it. We conducted an ecological analysis of life's gambles, ranging from the domains of roulette and life insurance to scientific publications and artificial insemination. Across all domains, payoffs and probabilities proved intimately tied, with payoff magnitudes signaling their probabilitie

Effects of domain-specific knowledge on memory for serial order.

Knowledge concerning domain-specific regularities in sequential structure has long been known to affect recall for serial order. However, very little work has been done toward specifying the exact role such knowledge plays. The present article proposes a theory of serial recall in structured domains, based on Bayesian decision theory and a set of representational assumptions proceeding from recent computational and neurophysiologic research. The theory suggests that the accuracy with which a target sequence will be recalled is influenced by two interacting factors: (1) the 'goodness' of the se

Does a perception of increased blood safety mean increased blood transfusion? An assessment of the risk compensation theory in Canada.

BACKGROUND: The risk compensation theory is a widely used concept in transport economics to analyze driver risk behaviour. This article explores the feasibility of applying the theory in blood transfusion to raise important questions regarding the increased blood safety measures and their possible effects on blood usage (e.g., the appropriateness in transfusion). Further, it presents the findings of a pilot survey of physicians in Canada. DISCUSSION: While studies have attempted to define transfusion appropriateness, this article argues that if the risk compensation theory holds true for tran

Cocaine-associated decision-making: Toward isolating preference.

Ever-increasing evidence suggests that substance use disorder is mediated by decision-making processes, and as such, providing nondrug alternatives can shift maladaptive preferences away from drug reinforcers, such as cocaine. Of note, a recent hypothesis suggests that preference for cocaine is simply a byproduct of cocaine intake, such that the 'direct' effects of cocaine weaken the impact of non-drug alternatives while measuring choice. Conversely, existing quantitative theories of decision-making suggest preference is determined by various dimensions of concurrent reinforcers that in turn d

The theoretical model of the school-based prevention programme Unplugged.

Unplugged is a school-based prevention programme designed and tested in the EU-Dap trial. The programme consists of 12 units delivered by class teachers to adolescents 12-14 years old. It is a strongly interactive programme including a training of personal and social skills with a specific focus on normative beliefs. The aim of this work is to define the theoretical model of the program, the contribution of the theories to the units, and the targeted mediators. The programme integrates several theories: Social Learning, Social Norms, Health Belief, theory of Reasoned Action-Attitude, and Probl

A neurocognitive theory of flexible emotion control: The role of the lateral frontal pole in emotion regulation.

Emotion regulation is essential to survive in a world full of challenges with rapidly changing contextual demands. The ability to flexibly shift between different emotional control strategies is critical to successfully deal with these demands. Recently, decision neuroscience has shown the importance of monitoring alternative control strategies. However, this insight has not been incorporated into current neurocognitive models of emotional control. Here, we integrate insights from decision and affective sciences into a novel viewpoint on emotion control, the Flexible Emotion Control Theory (FE

Testosterone and cortisol jointly mediate and modulate trust behavior in early adolescence.

During early adolescence, individuals undergo significant changes in neuroendocrine systems, neurodevelopment, and social sensitivity. Placing trust in the appropriate person becomes especially crucial for adolescents, given their increased peer interaction and heightened susceptibility to peer influence during this period. Adolescents take social distance into account when making trust decisions. However, the biological and cognitive mechanisms involved in trust decision-making towards peers of different social distances remain unclear. The present study investigated the interactions among ho

B-FMEA-TRIZ model for scheme decision in conceptual product design: A study on upper-limb hemiplegia rehabilitation exoskeleton.

Upper-limb rehabilitation devices are essential in restoring and improving the motor function of hemiplegic patients. However, developing a product design that meets the needs of users is challenging. Current design tools and methods suffer from limitations such as a single model, poor synergy between integrated models, and subjective bias in analysing user needs and translating them into product attributes. To address these issues, this study proposes a new structural design decision-making model based on Behaviour Analysis (B), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), and Teoriya Resheniya Izobr
