OBJECTIVES: Spin, a prevalent bias, can distort outcomes in well-validated research. Treatment of lumbar stenosis with spondylolisthesis through decompression alone (DA) vs decompression and fusion (DF) remains a controversial topic. We aimed to identify the prevalence of spin in meta-analyses and systematic reviews regarding DA vs DF in the treatment of spinal stenosis with concomitant degenerative spondylolisthesis.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for meta-analyses and systematic reviews comparing DA vs DF treatment of lumba

OBJECTIVE: To present a new mini-invasive surgery for compressive optic neuropathy (CON) in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) by adequately decompressing the orbital apex and correcting proptosis, and to analyze its results.
METHODS: A retrospective chart was reviewed in 29 patients receiving orbital decompression for the treatment of CON secondary to GO from October 2006 to May 2011. All patients diagnosed CON were in stable and inactive phase of GO at least for 6 months. All patients received endoscopic transethmoid medial orbital wall decompression to reduce the compression on the orbital apex.

Anterior cervical fixation is an excellent surgical technique for the removal of anterior compressive elements affecting the spinal cord and nerve roots while addressing cervical instability. However, it is important to recognize the unique challenges posed by the proximity of critical structures, including the trachea, esophagus, carotid sheath, and recurrent laryngeal nerve. Access to the upper cervical spine is often limited to the mandible. A thorough understanding of the relevant anatomy is essential for careful consideration of surgical indications when selecting an appropriate technique

BACKGROUND: Transforaminal full endoscopic lateral recess decompression (TE-LRD) can decompress lateral recess stenosis transforaminally under the endoscopy procedure. However, the biomechanical effects of the TE-LRD compared to the conventional decompression techniques are not reported. The purpose of this study is to compare the biomechanical effects of TE-LRD with conventional decompression techniques using finite element method.
METHODS: Three finite element models of lumbar functional spinal unit (FSU) of the L4-L5 levels were created: 1) normal disc 2) moderate grade disc degeneration 3

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal canal stenosis is commonly treated by dorsal decompression. However, resection of posterior elements increases the biomechanical instability and may lead to further complications. In order to prevent this, fusion of the involved segments is often performed. But further complications may be associated with this, for example, highly reduced flexibility. In order to overcome fusion-related problems, dynamic stabilisation devices, like the new LimiFlex™ Paraspinous Tension Band (PSB), have been developed. This prospective study compares dorsal decompression without stabil

ObjectiveThis study compared the radiological and clinical outcomes with transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) to evaluate the effect of indirect decompression through oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) as revision surgery.MethodsWe enrolled patients who underwent single-level fusion with revision surgery at the same level as the previous decompression level. We retrospectively reviewed 25 patients who underwent OLIF from 2017 to 2018 and 25 who received TLIF from 2014 to 2018. Radiologic and clinical outcomes were evaluated by cross-sectional area (CSA) of the spinal canal, thickn

OBJECTIVE: Hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis annually. The mild (minimally invasive lumbar decompression) procedure was developed as a potentially less invasive alternative to open decompression; however, much of the evidence has been gathered from industry-sponsored studies. The present study sought to compare real-world clinical outcomes between the mild procedure and open decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis.
METHODS: All patients who underwent the mild procedure at a single-institution, multisite, tertiary care center from 2005 to Octo

AIMS: Symptomatic spinal stenosis is a very common problem, and decompression surgery has been shown to be superior to nonoperative treatment in selected patient groups. However, performing an instrumented fusion in addition to decompression may avoid revision and improve outcomes. The aim of the SpInOuT feasibility study was to establish whether a definitive randomized controlled trial (RCT) that accounted for the spectrum of pathology contributing to spinal stenosis, including pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) mismatch and mobile spondylolisthesis, could be conducted.
METHODS: As par

STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort.
OBJECTIVE: It is unclear if patients with a recurrent disc herniation benefit from a concurrent fusion compared with a repeat decompression alone. We compared outcomes of decompression alone (D0) versus decompression and fusion (DF) for recurrent disc herniation.
METHODS: Patients enrolled in the Quality and Outcomes Database from 3 sites with a first episode of recurrent disc herniation were identified. Demographic, surgical, and radiographic data including the presence of listhesis and extent of facet resection on computed tomography or magnetic resonance
