[Pathologic swallowing pattern after tumor surgery of oro- and hypopharynx. Analysis with differentiated deglutition imaging].

Dysphagia is a common complaint following surgical intervention in the oral cavity and hypopharynx, often leading to prolonged postoperative recovery. Videofluoroscopy allows detailed visualization of deglutition, demonstrating the morphology as well as the functional aspects. Therefore, videofluoroscopy provides the basis for further therapeutic management. We discuss the pathology of deglutition in 19 patients recovering from tumor surgery of the oro- and hypopharynx. In most cases the results demonstrated severe impairment of both the oral and pharyngeal phase of deglutition. Our data empha

Developmental deglutition and intrinsic tongue muscle maturation phenotypes in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with difficulties with feeding during infancy and childhood. Weaning, or transitioning from nursing to independent deglutition, requires developmental progression in tongue function. However, little is known about whether postnatal tongue muscle maturation is impacted in DS. This study tested the hypothesis that the Ts65Dn mouse model of DS has developmental delays in deglutition, comprised of differences in eating and drinking behaviors relative to euploid controls, coinciding with atypical measures of intrinsic tongue muscle microanatomy. Assessment of Speech and Deglutition in Patients with Carcinoma Tongue Post Radial Forearm Free Flap Cover.

BACKGROUND: Edaravone, a newly synthesized radical scavenger, has shown an excellent effect on treating stroke patients. The effect of edaravone on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury was examined. METHODS: Six rats were injected with CCl4 alone and six rats were intravenously injected with edaravone immediately after and 3 h after injection of CCl4. Another six rats were injected with olive oil alone. The animals were killed at 24 h after the CCl4 injection. RESULTS: Injection of CCl4 was followed by a marked increase in serum alanine aminotranferase (ALT) level (CCl4, 16

Immediate effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on deglutition after treatment of laryngeal cancer: a case report.

The objective of this study was to verify the immediate effect of sensory and motor neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), in the oral and pharyngeal phases of deglutition, in a 64 year male patient after laryngeal cancer treatment. Videofluoroscopy was performed during deglutition of 5 ml of honey and pudding, under three conditions: without stimulation, with sensory NMES, with motor NMES, randomly defined. The degree of dysfunction of deglutition (DOSS), the presence of food stasis (Eisenhuber scale), laryngeal penetration and laryngotracheal aspiration (PAS) and oral and pharyngeal tr

[General review of deglutition. Anatomy, physiology and principal pathological disorders. Diagnostic and therapeutic contribution of imaging].

Disorders of deglutition are a relatively frequent, serious, sometimes fatal symptom, representing a major cost for society. Their frequency is currently increasing in parallel with aging of the general population, the increased incidence of pharyngolaryngeal operations and the prolonged survival of neurological patients. A good understanding of the nervous control and anatomical structures as well as the physiology of deglutition is therefore important to decide which investigations and treatments should be proposed. The radiological investigation of a patient presenting with a disorder of de

Maturation of the Coordination Between Respiration and Deglutition with and Without Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Lesion in an Animal Model.

The timing of the occurrence of a swallow in a respiratory cycle is critical for safe swallowing, and changes with infant development. Infants with damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which receives sensory information from the larynx and supplies the intrinsic muscles of the larynx, experience a significant incidence of dysphagia. Using our validated infant pig model, we determined the interaction between this nerve damage and the coordination between respiration and swallowing during postnatal development. We recorded 23 infant pigs at two ages (neonatal and older, pre-weaning) feeding

Histological observations of age-related changes in the epiglottis associated with decreased deglutition function in older adults.

Although the epiglottis plays a vital role in deglutition, histological studies of the epiglottis and surrounding ligaments associated with swallowing dysfunction are limited. Therefore, we performed histological observations to clarify age-related changes in the morphological characteristics of the epiglottis and surrounding structures. Tissue samples comprising the epiglottis and surrounding structures were collected from corpses that were both orally fed and tube-fed during their lifetimes. Following hematoxylin and eosin, Elastica Van Gieson, and immunohistochemical staining procedures, th

Prolonged impairment of deglutition in supratentorial ischaemic stroke: the predictive value of Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of ischaemic stroke patients show initial dysphagia, which may persist for months. Guidelines recommend switching nasogastric (NG) to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feeding at the second week after the stroke if impaired deglutition is expected for another 4 weeks. Precise prognostic criteria are lacking. We hypothesised that the Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia (PAHD) performed 8 to 10 days after the stroke predicts impaired deglutition for another 4 weeks. METHODS: After a first dysphagia assessment (buccolingual motor function, liquid and

Deglutition-Induced Atrial Fibrillation in a Previously Healthy Adult Male: A Rare Trigger Unmasked After Medication Discontinuation.

We report a rare case of swallowing-induced paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in a previously healthy 50-year-old male. Initially diagnosed with paroxysmal AF and successfully managed on flecainide and bisoprolol, the patient became asymptomatic, and his Holter monitor prior to the latest admission showed he maintained sinus rhythm. However, after discontinuation of antiarrhythmic therapy, he presented with recurrent palpitations. Continuous telemetry monitoring during readmission revealed episodes of AF triggered by swallowing liquids, resolving shortly thereafter. Investigations ruled out

[Revascularized over-long jejunum segments in single stage reconstruction of voice and deglutition function after total laryngopharyngectomy].

After surgery of advanced larynx and pharynx malignancies, a main problem is reconstruction of swallowing and voice. With microvascular small bowl transplantation, we have been able to use a 30 cm segment of jejunum in a one-stage procedure to reconstruct extended defects of the oropharynx, and total by hypopharynx, as well as to create a speaking-syphon as devised by Ehrenberger. The surgical technique is described and we now report the results achieved in our first five patients. This new method enables pharyngectomized and laryngectomized patients to speak and to eat without any aspiration

A human model of restricted upper esophageal sphincter opening and its pharyngeal and UES deglutitive pressure phenomena.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia due to upper esophageal sphincter (UES) dysfunction is commonly encountered in the clinical setting. Selective experimental perturbation of various components of the deglutitive apparatus can provide an opportunity to improve our understanding of the swallowing physiology and pathophysiology. The aim is to characterize the pharyngeal and UES deglutitive pressure phenomena in an experimentally induced restriction of UES opening in humans. We studied 14 volunteers without any dysphagic symptoms (7 men, 66 ± 11 yr) but with various supraesophageal reflux symptoms. To induc
