Demography, heritability and genetic correlation of feline hip dysplasia and response to selection in a health screening programme.

Feline hip dysplasia (FHD) is a debilitating condition affecting the hip joints of millions of domestic cats worldwide. Despite this, little is known about FHD except that it is relatively common in the large breed Maine Coon. We used 20 years of data from 5038 pedigree-registered Maine Coon cats in a radiographic health screening programme for FHD to determine, for the first time, its heritability, genetic correlation to body mass and response to selection. FHD prevalence was 37.4%, with no sex predilection; however, FHD severity increased with age and body mass. Heritability of the radiograp

Perceived humiliation during admission to a psychiatric emergency service and its relation to socio-demography and psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of empirical studies of patients' level of humiliation during the hospital admission process and its implications for the clinical setting. We wanted to explore associations between self-rated humiliation and socio-demography and psychopathology in relation to admission to a psychiatric emergency unit. METHODS: Consecutively admitted patients (N = 186) were interviewed with several validated instruments. The patients self-rated humiliation by The Cantril Ladder, and 35% of the sample was defined as the high humiliation group. RESULTS: Final multivariate analysis f

Effect of cadmium and chromium toxicity on the demography and population growth of Brachionus calyciflonrs and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera).

This paper reports on the assessment of the effect of Cd+2 and Cr+6 to the rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. patulus using life table demography and population growth. Based on acute toxicity tests, cadmium was nearly 100 times more toxic than chromium for both the rotifer species. Age-specific fecundity curves of both the brachionids showed increased offspring beyond the age of 4 days and after that the production nearly stabilized for about 10 days and later declined. At any given treatment, B. calyciflorus had the higher rate of offspring production than B. patulus. For any given roti

Association Between Citrus Flushing Cycles and Asian Citrus Psyllid Demography in Huanglongbing-Free Area in Brazil.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), named as Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), is the vector of the bacterium associated with huanglongbing (HLB), the most destructive citrus disease. The use of citrus flushing and ACP monitoring tools is essential for the knowledge of the occurrence pattern of cycles of both and for the improvement of the ACP management. During 3 years, 20 branches from 20 trees were evaluated for vegetative flushing, ACP abundance, and occupation in tree and branches in a Brazilian citrus area free for HLB. The obtained data was investigated through spectral and co-sp

Non allergic rhinitis: demography of eosinophils in nasal smear, blood total eosinophil counts and IgE levels.

Seventy-eight consecutive patients with non allergic rhinitis (negative allergy skin tests) were evaluated and classified as to possible causes using strict criteria. Sixty-one percent had vasomotor rhinitis (VMR), 33% had non allergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome (NARES), 16% had sinusitis, 12% had a possible hidden allergy (elevated IgE), 4% had blood eosinophilic non allergic rhinitis (BENAR) and 2% had hypothyroidism. Some overlapping of diagnosis was present. Five per cent or greater eosinophils in the nasal smear appeared to be enough to consider the diagnosis of NARES. Sinusitis

Medical doctors in Hungary: 30 years after graduation. Data on lifestyle, morbidity, demography and differences between specialties.

There are few studies from East and Central European countries on health-status, lifestyle and social circumstances of medical professionals. We evaluated data of a cohort of physicians who had graduated 30 years ago in Hungary and compared the data of their professional carrier, life style, health outcomes, and medical specialties. Questionnaires compiled by an expert group and filled in by 208 physicians (83 men and 125 women) were analysed. Men mostly work as surgeons, women were mostly employed as primary care specialists. Women changed their specialty and/or place of work more often than

Multi-locus phylogeographic and population genetic analysis of Anolis carolinensis: historical demography of a genomic model species.

The green anole (Anolis carolinensis) has been widely used as an animal model in physiology and neurobiology but has recently emerged as an important genomic model. The recent sequencing of its genome has shed new light on the evolution of vertebrate genomes and on the process that govern species diversification. Surprisingly, the patterns of genetic diversity within natural populations of this widespread and abundant North American lizard remain relatively unknown. In the present study, we use 10 novel nuclear DNA sequence loci (N = 62 to 152) and one mitochondrial locus (N = 226) to delimit

Demography, clinical characteristics, psychological and abuse profiles, treatment, and long-term follow-up of patients with gastroparesis.

Patients with gastroparesis frequently present challenging clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic problems. Data from 146 gastroparesis patients seen over six years were analyzed. Patients were evaluated at the time of initial diagnosis and at the most recent follow-up in terms of gastric emptying and gastrointestinal symptomatology. The psychological status and physical and sexual abuse history in female idiopathic gastroparesis patients were ascertained and an association between those factors and gastrointestinal symptomatology was sought. Eighty-two percent of patients were females (mean ag

A Novel Demography-Based Approach to Define Patient-Specific Outflow Boundary Conditions in CT-Based FFR Computations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography-based fractional flow reserve computation (CT-FFR) is widely used in clinical practice, based on its efficacy demonstrated in many studies. However, major assumptions remain with the outflow boundary conditions (BCs) representing coronary microvasculature, especially in hyperaemia. We here propose a novel method to estimate patient-specific microvascular response to hyperaemia for CT-FFR calculations, based on patients' routinely available demographic data. METHODS: A statistical model to predict microvascular flow response (MFR) from routinely co

Policy-Relevant Attitudes Toward COVID-19 Vaccination: Associations With Demography, Health Risk, and Social and Political Factors.

Background: Vaccination is considered to be a key public health intervention to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the success of the intervention is contingent on attitudes toward vaccination and the design of vaccination policies. Methods: We conduct cross-sectional analyses of policy-relevant attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination using survey data of a representative sample of Austrian residents collected by the Austrian Corona Panel Project (ACPP). As outcomes, we examine the individual readiness to get vaccinated, the support for compulsory vaccinations, and the preference for making the vac

Ecology and Demography of Free-Roaming Domestic Dogs in Rural Villages near Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Free-roaming dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are of public health and conservation concern because of their potential to transmit diseases, such as rabies, to both people and wildlife. Understanding domestic dog population dynamics and how they could potentially be impacted by interventions, such as rabies vaccination, is vital for such disease control efforts. For four years, we measured demographic data on 2,649 free-roaming domestic dogs in four rural villages in Tanzania: two villages with and two without a rabies vaccination campaign. We examined the effects of body condition, sex, age and

Population genetic structure and historical demography of Saccostrea echinata in the Northern South China sea and Beibu Gulf.

Marine invertebrates, such as oysters, were once thought to form large, panmictic populations with little genetic differentiation due to their high reproductive capacity and dual life stages. However, recent studies have shown significant genetic structuring and moderate gene flow across populations, influenced by factors like ocean currents, historical climate events, and environmental changes. The black-lip oyster (Saccostrea echinata), with its extensive dispersal potential, is ideal for population genetics studies. In current study, mitochondrial DNA (COI gene) was utilized to investigate
