Biochar amendments in a California salt marsh restoration reduced denitrification and supported distinct microbial community functions.

Accelerated sea level rise, combined with human-induced changes to hydrology and sediment transport, threatens the long-term persistence of coastal wetlands. Sediment addition is increasingly used to enhance wetland resilience to sea level rise, and incorporating biochar, a carbon-rich material produced through pyrolysis of organic matter, may enhance carbon storage, soil function, and vegetation recovery. We examined how biochar derived from Eucalyptus spp. feedstock influenced sediment properties, microbial communities, functional potential, and nitrate reduction pathways, with particular em

One shuttle, two wins: AQDS cuts N2O while boosting denitrification in cold, carbon-limited biofilm systems.

Efficient biological nitrogen removal in biofilm systems is hampered under low-temperature and carbon-limited ("dual-low") conditions, where impaired microbial metabolism curtails denitrification and promotes nitrous oxide (N2O). Quinone moieties of humic substances can shuttle electrons between microorganisms, yet their role in sustaining denitrification under dual-low stress remains unknown. Here we show that supplementing biofilm microcosms with the model humic analogue anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) raised nitrate (NO3--N) removal from below 60% to 81% at 4-6 °C and C/N = 4, while cu

Spatiotemporally targeted electron-donor impulse dosing sustains carbon-efficient partial nitritation-partial denitrification-anammox nitrogen removal.

Single-stage partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) is constrained by stoichiometric nitrate accumulation, which limits theoretical nitrogen removal efficiency to approximately 89%. Bulk or continuously supplied electron-donor dosing can enhance nitrate reduction, but reactor-wide donor exposure may increase donor demand, intensify heterotrophic competition, and limit control over donor delivery to specific nitrate-reducing niches in single-stage PN/A systems. In this study, spatiotemporally targeted electron-donor impulse dosing (STID) using a separate donor inlet and short pulses was implemented

Enzymatic valorization of food waste leachate into volatile fatty acid-rich carbon source for enhanced denitrification.

Food waste leachate (FWL) is a high-strength organic waste stream that poses increasing disposal and resource recovery challenges. This study developed an integrated enzymatic fermentation strategy to convert FWL into a volatile fatty acid (VFA)-rich carbon source for wastewater denitrification. Screening of ultrasonic, alkaline, alkaline-thermal, and enzymatic pretreatments identified the combined amylase-protease treatment as the most effective for FWL solubilization, increasing SCOD by 23.4% and promoting the release of biodegradable organic matter. During semi-continuous thermophilic anaer

Advantages of partial denitrification-anaerobic ammonium oxidation system under sulfamethoxazole stress: Adaptive mechanisms and synergistic metabolism.

The widespread use of antibiotics has led to their persistence in aquatic environments, posing serious challenges to biological treatment systems. This study systematically compared the performance and adaptive mechanisms of partial denitrification (PD)/anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and single anammox systems under long-term sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress over 193 days. At an influent SMX concentration of 3 mg/L, the PD/anammox system retained 75% of its initial total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency, significantly higher than that of the single anammox system (49%). The PD/

Iron-carbon micro-electrolysis coupled to heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification treating low carbon/nitrogen mariculture wastewater.

Considering the unsatisfied nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) treatment performance of mariculture wastewater caused by low carbon/nitrogen (C/N), a novel iron-carbon (Fe-C) micro-electrolysis coupled to heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HNAD) process was proposed to enhance the N and P elimination. Results revealed that total nitrogen (TN) removal and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies in Fe-C filter with HNAD (R-Fe) increased by 76.1% and 113.3% compared to filter packed with ceramsite (R-C). Fe-C micro-electrolysis reaction led to the decrease of microbial diversity

Temperature-resilient superior performances by coupling partial nitritation/anammox and iron-based denitrification with granular formation.

Partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A), an energy-neutral process, is widely employed in the treatment of nitrogen-rich wastewater. However, the intrinsic nitrate accumulation limits the total nitrogen (TN) removal, and the practical application of PN/A continues to face a significant challenge at low temperatures (<15 °C). Here, an integrated partial nitritation-anammox and iron-based denitrification (PNAID) system was developed to address the concern. Two up-flow bioreactors were set up and operated for 400 days, with one as the control group and the other as the experiment group with the additi

Iron sulphides mediated autotrophic denitrification: An emerging bioprocess for nitrate pollution mitigation and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Iron sulphides, mainly in the form of mackinawite (FeS), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS, x = 0-0.125) and pyrite (FeS2), are the most abundant sulphide minerals and can be oxidized under anoxic and circumneutral pH conditions by chemoautotrophic denitrifying bacteria to reduce nitrate to N2. Iron sulphides mediated autotrophic denitrification (ISAD) represents an important natural attenuation process of nitrate pollution and plays a pivotal role in linking nitrogen, sulphur and iron cycles in a variety of anoxic environments. Recently, it has emerged as a promising bioprocess for nutrient removal from var

Performance of nitrate-dependent anaerobic ferrous oxidizing (NAFO) process: a novel prospective technology for autotrophic denitrification.

Nitrate-dependent anaerobic ferrous oxidizing (NAFO) is a valuable biological process, which utilizes ferrous iron to convert nitrate into nitrogen gas, removing nitrogen from wastewater. In this work, the performance of NAFO process was investigated as a nitrate removal technology. The results showed that NAFO system was feasible for autotrophic denitrification. The volumetric loading rate (VLR) and volumetric removal rate (VRR) under steady state were 0.159±0.01 kg-N/(m(3) d) and 0.073±0.01 kg-N/(m(3) d), respectively. In NAFO system, the effluent pH was suggested as an indicator which demon

Impacts and mechanisms of oyster farming on denitrification and anammox in coastal sediments from Tieshan Bay, China.

Oyster aquaculture is widely recognized as an effective way to mitigate coastal eutrophication, but critical knowledge gaps remain regarding how it modulates nitrogen removal processes, which requires further investigation. In this study, sediments from oyster farming (OY) and non-oyster farming (NOY) areas in Tieshan Bay, China, were analyzed to explore the impacts of oyster farming on denitrification and anammox in coastal sediments. OY sediments exhibited significantly higher sediment oxygen demand (SOD), total organic carbon (TOC), ammonium (NH4+), ferrous iron (Fe2+), and sulfide than NOY

New insights into deep nitrogen removal in WWTP effluent: Performance and mechanisms of autotrophic denitrification filters.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) face increasing demands for enhanced nitrogen removal from their effluents, yet current removal efficiencies remain suboptimal. The sulfur-siderite-magnetite autotrophic denitrification (SSMAD) system has been shown to achieve high nitrogen removal efficiency in previous studies. Nevertheless, the design and optimization of such reactors have garnered insufficient systematic research attention. This study designed four reaction devices with distinct configurations. All devices were packed with fillers of the SSMAD system. The results indicate that the Vertic

Mechanistic insights into microbial and functional responses to norfloxacin in a thiosulfate-mediated denitrification granular sludge system.

Thiosulfate-driven denitrification granular sludge systems offer a promising strategy for treating wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. In this study, the system achieved 97.0 % nitrate removal and 50.2 % norfloxacin removal within a 1.5-hour hydraulic retention time, without nitrite accumulation. Norfloxacin was degraded via acetylation, defluorination, and quinoline ring cleavage, reducing the ecotoxicity of transformation products. Functional analysis revealed a 65.2 % increase in cytochrome P450 abundance, along with elevated expression of acetyltransferases, dehalogenases, and d

Potential for microbial denitrification coupled with methanol oxidation found in abundant MAGs in Antarctic Peninsula sediments.

Denitrification accounts for a substantial nitrogen loss from environmental systems, shifting microbial composition and impacting other biogeochemical cycles. In Antarctica, rising temperatures cause increased organic matter deposition in marine sediments, which can significantly alter microbially mediated denitrification. To examine the genetic potential of microorganisms driving N-cycling in these sediments, benthic sediment cores were collected at two sites in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. DNA was extracted from multiple depths at each site, resulting in the reconstruction of 75 high-quality

Inhibition-level-based carrier selection and kinetic insights for optimised denitrification of saline wastewaters in MBBR.

The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) provides a high-rate treatment process for the denitrification of saline industrial wastewaters. The carrier structure regulates the biofilm-liquid contact area and can limit the biofilm exposure not only to substrate but also to inhibitors and thus, affects the process performance. However, the potential for biofilms on different carriers to perform differentially under varying salinities remains unexplored as MBBR optimisation strategy. In this study, the nitrogen removal kinetics and biofilm dynamics of methanol-driven denitrification in two MBBRs with

Revealing discrepancies and drivers in the impact of lomefloxacin on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial community growth and succession.

The coexistence of antibiotics and nitrates has raised great concern about antibiotic's impact on denitrification. However, conflicting results in these studies are very puzzling, possibly due to differences in microbial succession stages. This study investigated the effects of the high-priority urgent antibiotic, lomefloxacin (LOM), on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial growth and succession. The results demonstrated that LOM's impact on denitrification varied significantly across three successional stages, with the most pronounced effects exhibited in the initial stage (53.8% p

The effect of organic sources on the electron distribution and N2O emission in sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification biofilters.

Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SAD) is considered as an effective alternative to traditional heterotrophic denitrification (HD) due to its cheap, low sludge production and non-toxicity. Nitrous oxide (N2O) as an intermediate product inevitably was generated at the limited supply of electron donor or unbalanced electron distribution condition during the denitrification process. Recently, autotrophic denitrification biofilters were conclusively implemented for advanced nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, residual organic sources after wastewater treatment

Synergy of cyano groups and cobalt single atoms in graphitic carbon nitride for enhanced bio-denitrification.

Bio-denitrification plays a crucial role in the purification of nitrogen contaminated water, yet the low efficiency of the pure biological system often leads to the accumulation of harmful intermediates. Semi-biological catalysis provides an effective approach to improving the reaction efficiency through hybridizing artificial nanomaterials with natural organisms, yet the application of this strategy in bio-denitrification is limited. In this study, the effect of surface engineered carbon nitride on the denitrification capability of denitrifying bacteria was investigated. We found that cyano g

Nitrate removal, spatiotemporal communities of denitrifiers and the importance of their genetic potential for denitrification in novel denitrifying bioreactors.

Nitrate treatment performance and denitrification activity were compared between denitrifying biological filters (DNBFs) based on dewatered alum sludge (DAS) and neutralized used acid (NUA). The spatiotemporal distribution of denitrifying genes and the genetic potential associated with denitrification activity and nitrate removal in both DNBFs were also evaluated. The removal efficiency of NUA-DNBF increased by 8% compared with that of DAS-DNBF, and the former NUA-DNBF emitted higher amount of N2O. Analysis of abundance and composition profiles showed that denitrifying gene patterns varied mor
