Blood pH Changes in Dental Pulp of Patients with Pulpitis.

The severity of pulpitis is a crucial factor in determining the suitable treatment. There are no clear objective indicators to assess the stage of pulp inflammation that could be used in clinical practice. The change in blood pH of the pulp during the inflammatory phase could hypothetically serve as an indicator of the pulp inflammation severity. The aim of this study was to assess the pH values in the pulpal blood of mature teeth in patients with symptomatic pulpitis, in comparison with the healthy controls. The study included patients with symptoms of pulpitis in premolar or molar teeth (Tes

Traumatic dental injuries and pulp sequelae in an adolescent population.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) occur frequently and may result in pulp sequelae. This includes pulp necrosis with infection, pulp canal obliteration and root resorption. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of pulp sequelae after TDI among Norwegian adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective longitudinal study, including historical clinical data, was conducted with 16-year-old pupils in western Norway. All first-grade pupils, born in 1997 (n = 5184), attending public high schools, were invited to participate and to respond to an electro

Effects of Extracellular pH on Dental Pulp Cells In Vitro.

INTRODUCTION: The proliferation and migration of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), a population comprised of dental pulp cells (DPCs), are important processes for pulp tissue repair. Dental pulp is exposed to changes in extracellular pH under various conditions, such as acidosis and exposure to caries-associated bacteria or a pulp capping agent. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of extracellular pH on DPC proliferation and migration in vitro. METHODS: To evaluate the proliferation potency of DPCs in various extracellular pH conditions, 2 × 10(4) cells were seeded into 3

EZH2, a potential regulator of dental pulp inflammation and regeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp has limited capability to regenerate, which happens in the early stage of pulpitis. An ambiguous relationship exists; inflammation may impair or support pulp regeneration. Epigenetics, which is involved in cell proliferation and inflammation, could regulate human dental pulp cell (HDPCs) regeneration. The aim of this study was to determine the role of the epigenetic mark, enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), in the inflammation, proliferation, and regeneration of dental pulp. We used trimethylated histone H3 lysine 27(H3K27me3) and its lysine demethylase 6B (KDM6B) to

Influence of moderate to severe chronic periodontitis on dental pulp.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between periodontal disease and dental pulp changes is controversial and has been debated for many years. This human study was performed to evaluate the possible effects of moderate to advanced periodontal disease on the different aspect of dental pulp structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty hopeless permanent teeth were extracted from systemically healthy adults because of moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis, with a bone loss of >6 mm and a mobility of grade 2 or 3. Upon extraction, the apical 2 to 3 mm of the roots were immediately sectioned. Four to fiv

Immunohistochemical aspects of the evaluation of the inflammatory answer of the dental pulp.

The inflammatory answer of the dental pulp in front of an antigen presents a series of particularities caused by its special anatomical conditions. The evaluation of the inflammatory answer in the evaluation tests of the biocompatibility of the dental materials is made by histological methods without defining precise quantitative criteria to measure the pulp reaction. In this study, we followed the reaction of the pulp tissue to five antibodies (CD20, CD45Ro, CD4, CD8, and CD68) in order to evaluate the inflammatory aspects of the dental pulp. We did not find positive answers for the CD20 prot

The role of dental pulp cells in resorption of deciduous teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To address the question whether dental pulp cells of exfoliating human deciduous teeth have some roles for controlling or regulating the root resorption via secreting key molecules (OPG, RANKL, CSF-1, TGFbeta, MCP-1 and Cbfa-1) in osteoclastogenesis, we used a sensitive reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method for detection of mRNA expressions for the cytokines listed. STUDY DESIGN: The dental pulps were retrieved from incisor and molar teeth in the late stage of shedding (n = 30) and from sound premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons (control group;

An overview of the dental pulp: its functions and responses to injury.

The dental pulp is a unique tissue and its importance in the long-term prognosis of the tooth is often ignored by clinicians. It is unique in that it resides in a rigid chamber which provides strong mechanical support and protection from the microbial rich oral environment. If this rigid shell loses its structural integrity, the pulp is under the threat of the adverse stimuli from the mouth, such as caries, cracks, fractures and open restoration margins, all of which provide pathways for micro-organisms and their toxins to enter the pulp. The pulp initially responds to irritation by becoming i

Effects of doxorubicin on human dental pulp cells in vitro.

There is substantial information concerning the effects of continuous exposure to supratherapeutic or therapeutic concentrations of doxorubicin on human molar pulpal cells; the effects of continuous exposure to subtherapeutic concentrations of this agent are undetermined. To this end, we studied the proliferation of human fibroblasts and pulpal cells and their pattern of mineralized nodule deposition in vitro. Cell proliferation was assessed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days from populations with either no exposure (control) or exposure to 10(-6)-10(-9) mol/L doxorubicin. Mineralized nodule deposition an

An immunohistological study on cyclooxygenase-2 in human dental pulp.

Characteristics of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expressing cells in human dental pulp were immunohistologically studied. Extirpated pulpal tissues from extracted teeth were examined to elucidate the localization and distribution of COX-2. Pulpal tissues were examined by the labeled streptavidin biotin method using specific mouse monoclonal antibodies for COX-2. Cell types of the COX-2 expressing cells were also investigated by the double stain technique using both monoclonal antibodies for CD68/macrophage and anti-COX-2. COX-2 expressing cells could be found in all of the inflamed pulps, and these

Histopathological evaluation of the dental pulps in crown-fractured teeth.

Trauma is a common cause of pulpal damage. In traumatic injuries, the first priority is to protect the vitality of pulps. But the time between the trauma and treatment must be short to preserve vital, noninflamed pulps. The aim of this study was to investigate the histopathological changes in pulpal tissues at different time periods after crown fractures. Twenty-three teeth with enamel and dentin fractures, with and without pulp exposure were evaluated. The reasons for seeking dental treatment were aesthetic consideration, pain, or discomfort. The extirpated pulps were histologically prepared

Rates of putrefaction of dental pulp in the Northwest coast environment.

Cytological stability is of interest to criminal investigators in instances where remnants of soft tissue have been preserved, since such tissue can aid in the identification of human remains, helping to determine either the sex of the individual or his or her identity. This study based on seven experiments shows that, in Northwest coast outdoor environments in both summer (three experiments) and winter (three experiments), the stability of dental pulp nuclei ranges from 4 days to 2 weeks. The seventh experiment serves to describe the morphological sequence observed in nuclear putrefaction. Th

Natural modifiers of the inflammatory process in the human dental pulp.

Concentrations of the protease inhibitors alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin were determined in normal and inflamed human dental pulps. Carious pulpal exposure which is associated with polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and release of lysosomal enzymes was chosen as the point of verifiable inflammatory activity in the pulp. Normal samples were collected from nondiseased third molar teeth treatment planned for extraction and inflamed human pulps were collected from teeth with deep carious lesions. One half of each sample was assayed for concentration of protease inhibitors by e

Interaction between the autonomic and sensory nerves in the dental pulp.

The function of intradental sensory receptors is strongly affected by activation of the sympathetic nerves. This effect is most probably indirect and due to changes in pulpal blood flow. Also, in inflamed teeth the sensitivity changes of pulp nerves seem to be closely related to changes in the blood flow. Such inflammatory mediators as histamine, bradykinin and serotonin affect the sensitivity of intradental receptors in pulpal inflammation. In addition, many neuropeptides, for example substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), seem to be involved and may interact with histam
