AIM: To present two cases of external root resorption and in so doing highlight rarer causative factors as well as the difficulties in classifying root resorption.
SUMMARY: Root resorption in the permanent dentition is usually pathological. Local factors are the most frequent causes of resorption, most commonly excessive pressure and inflammation. However, many systemic abnormalities have been implicated in the resorption process. Resorption is often an incidental finding during routine examination. Otherwise, late in the disease process, tooth mobility or infection may arise. A rarer form of

Congenital contractural arachnodactyly (CCA) is an inherited disorder of connective tissue similar to Marfan's syndrome. The craniofacial and oral features of a young girl with CCA are described. The patient has the typical features of CCA as well as some additional dental anomalies which have not previously been reported with this syndrome. These include banded pitted enamel hypoplasia and hypomineralization, long, spindly tapered roots, and pulp canal obliteration with multiple pulp stones. Dentists must be aware of the clinical features of a patient's syndrome to determine whether there are

UNLABELLED: Root fractures are uncommon following dental trauma but are mostly diagnosed shortly after the injury, although occasionally at routine dental appointments. This paper presents the management of the different types of root fractures and the types of healing response suggesting the appropriate follow-up of these injuries.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A thorough clinical examination supplemented with radiographs, vitality tests, appropriate treatment planning and subsequent follow-up of root fractured teeth can improve the prognosis for these teeth and also minimize the need for subsequent e

Dentin dysplasia is a genetic defect of dentin formation inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. It is characterized by normal enamel but atypical dentin formation with abnormal pulpal morphology. Once thought to be a single entity, dentin dysplasia has now been divided into type I (radicular) and II (coronal). Type I is by far the more common. Both types include multiple/generalized involvement of primary and permanent dentition. Combinations of both types have also been described in the literature. Four distinct forms of dentin dysplasia type I and 1 form of dentin dysplasia type II are id

The present report describes a case of a mid-root fracture in a maxillary central incisor of a 19-year-old patient. The fractured tooth was splinted with composite that was removed only 3 years later, as the patient did not appear for follow-up examinations. At this time, the radiographs revealed a normal periodontal ligament, rounding of the borders of the fragments and pulp obliteration of both fragments. Eight years later, the tooth was clinically normal and blurred calcification of the root canal was disclosed radiographically. After 13.5 years the patient complained of tooth mobility and

BACKGROUND: Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a disorder of tooth development characterized by abnormal enamel formation. In order to detect other dental and jawbone abnormalities that could be associated with AI, a retrospective and analytic study was conducted comparing panoramic radiographs of AI and non-AI patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Digital panoramic radiographs of 60 AI and 60 non-AI patients were examined. Abnormalities in dental number, size, shape, eruption, and in the shape of the dental arches were checked and blindly recorded by two experimented observers. Descriptive statistics

BACKGROUND: Rickets is a medical condition caused by vitamin D deficiency, typically caused by inadequate dietary intake, limited sun exposure, or, less commonly, genetic disorders. While skeletal abnormalities are the hallmark of rickets in children, oral manifestations, such as recurrent dental abscesses occurring in the absence of carious lesions, can also be observed. This report describes the case of a child presenting with oral features suggestive of hereditary rickets, despite the lack of skeletal abnormalities and without a confirmed genetic aetiology. Histological and microstructural

Orascopic endodontics has helped bring visualization to what has literally been a "blind" specialty. The ease of operation and better operating ergonomics of fiber optic instrumentation has allowed the endodontist to identify and treat endodontic etiology more efficiently. The metamorphosis of understanding endodontics from an in vivo perspective is changing the way we "think" about the practice of endodontics. Prior to intracanal visualization, the cognitive process of determining when the canal was ready for obturation was merely an educated guess based on years of in vitro instrumentation r

This article documents an additional case of a rare syndrome, reported only in black persons in South Africa. It is characterised by hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia with central odontogenic fibroma (WHO-type)-like features attached to multiple impacted teeth, and with generalized enamel dysplasia showing features of hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta. Other features associated with the syndrome, but not present in all reported cases, include open-bite malocclusion, gingival overgrowth, hypodontia, pulpal calcifications and aberrant root formation of the unerupted teeth. Reports on the histopathologic features of pulp tissue following traumatic injuries are scarce. The aim of the present clinical and histological report was to provide some novel insights about the histological condition of the pulp tissue of an immature permanent tooth, shortly after a combined injury of uncomplicated crown fracture with concomitant subluxation. A seven-year-old male patient presented with a localized buccal swelling apically on tooth #21 and with a radiographic app. One week earlier, the patient had suffered an uncomplicated crown fracture, and the referral dentist had solely

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The prevalence of pulpal calcifications was widely studied in the past. The purposes of this study were to investigate the incidence of pulpal calcifications of periodontally involved teeth in a Taiwan Chinese population using radiographic and histological examinations, and to find out any association of pulpal calcification with systemic disease and dental conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 197 teeth freshly extracted because of severe periodontal destruction were collected and prepared for histological and radiographic studies of the incidence of pulpal tissue

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of bacterial infection on the pulpal and periodontal tissues in replanted teeth using germ-free and conventional rats. Forty maxillary and mandibular first molars from ten 6-week-old germ-free male Wistar rats were used. The animals and all materials were maintained in a germ-free environment inside vinyl isolators throughout the experimental periods. Twenty conventional male Wistar rats served as controls. The first molars were intentionally replanted immediately after extraction. At 3 days, and 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks after replantat

Ten immature autotransplanted lower premolars from six patients from 7 to 12 years of age were studied and assessed clinically and radiographically at Regional Clinical Hospital in Temuco between January 2004 and April 2006. All transplantations were performed both because of a missing anterior tooth by dental trauma or by healing complications after injuries. The mean age at the time of the surgery was 10 years (range 7-12 years) and the postoperative follow-up period varied from 5 to 27 months with a mean of 16.9 months. All teeth were stabilized with flexible composite resin wire splints. W

INTRODUCTION: Regenerative endodontic therapy aims to restore the pulp-dentin complex through biological approaches; however, current cell-free techniques often fail to achieve true dental pulp regeneration and may result in fibrous tissue formation or canal calcification. This study investigated dynamic hydrogels as advanced scaffolds for dental pulp stem cell (DPSC)-mediated regeneration, leveraging their viscoelastic properties to regulate cellular behavior and immune responses.
METHODS: Dynamic hydrogels were synthesized using host-guest chemistry (Gel-Mal/HA-Ada-CD-SH) to mimic aspects o

UNLABELLED: The traumatized primary teeth have a great clinical significance because it not only have consequences on itself but also on its succedaneous developing permanent teeth due to its close anatomical relationship. The extent of severity is adjudged by the type of trauma and the age of the child at the time of trauma. For instance, avulsion and intrusive injuries present with high percentage of developmental disturbances in permanent teeth than subluxation and extrusive injuries. When considering the age of the child at the time of trauma, consequences are less severe in children over

PURPOSE: This study aims to propose the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) as a model for studying two features related to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), i.e. augmented proliferative capacity and altered osteogenic differentiation.
METHODS: We isolated a DPSC from the pulp of deciduous teeth of a 6-year-old NF1 patient and two other healthy children of similar age. Cell proliferation was assayed by counting with a haemocytometer after successive cell re-plating. In order to compare osteogenic differentiation, we used osteoblast-differentiating medium and quantified alizarin stain, which relates
