Redistribution Effect of Demineralized Dentin on Hydrophobic Monomers.

Inadequate dentin bonding persists as a major cause of secondary caries and restoration failure, accounting for >60% of global dental restorative costs. Prevailing adhesion theory attributes this to challenges in displacing water from the demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) to infiltrate hydrophobic monomers. However, techniques such as ethanol-wet bonding, which eliminate water, yield only partial improvement, suggesting limitations in this water-centric view. Using chromatography equivalence modeling and Nile red molecular tracing, we identified a solvent-independent redistribution effect exer

Age Estimation Using Maxillary Central Incisor Analysis on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Human Images.

Forensic dentistry plays an important role in human identification, and dental age estimation is an important part of the process. Secondary dentin deposition throughout an individual's lifetime and consequent modification in teeth anatomy is an important parameter for age estimation procedures. The aim of the present study was to develop regression equations to determine age in adults by means of linear measurements and ratios on sagittal, coronal and axial slices of maxillary central incisors using cone bean computed tomography (CBCT). Multiplanar measurements of upper central incisors were

Dentinogenesis imperfecta: endodontic implications. Case report.

Dentinogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary disorder resulting in defective dentin in both the primary and secondary dentitions. The complications of dentinogenesis imperfecta are difficult to manage and provide a challenge to the dentist. This case report concerns treating an African American patient with dentinogenesis imperfecta who appeared for treatment with endodontic pathosis. It illustrates the need for appropriate and timely restorative treatment to prevent pulpal pathosis. Also demonstrated is the difficulty of endodontically treating dentinogenesis imperfecta teeth because of pulpal o

Chronic focal sclerosing osteomyelitis associated with a cracked tooth. Report of a case.

Chronic focal sclerosing osteomyelitis is a periapical lesion that involves reactive osteogenesis evoked by chronic inflammation of the dental pulp. In most cases, this lesion develops in the mandibular molar region in response to a low-grade infection of the pulp that results from a deep carious lesion. A case is presented in which incomplete tooth fracture was the apparent cause of this type of periapical pathosis.

Effects of silver diamine fluoride in human dentin: A systematic review of in vitro studies.

The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on dentin in permanent teeth. Eight databases (PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, Science Direct, LILACS, and Livivo) and three "gray literature" sources (Open Access Theses and Dissertations [OATD], Open Grey, and ProQuest) were used. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed, and methodology quality was assessed using the QUIN tool. The review included in vitro studies investigating the effect of 38% SDF on demineralized per

Early cellular events in an actinomycin D-created dentin niche in the rat incisor.

Administration of actinomycin D at a dose level of 0.375 microgram/g resulted in the selective disruption of developing odontoblasts at a critical stage of morphogenesis. A dentin niche was formed which was later repaired by cellular reparative dentin. The cellular changes which resulted in dentin niche formation were studied histologically and ultrastructurally in serial longitudinal and transverse sections from tissues obtained 10 h to 80 h following injection of the drug. Five stages were identified: initial destruction (10-20 h), rapid destruction (30-40 h), debris removal (50-60 h), proli

Human root caries: histopathology of initial lesions in cementum and dentin.

The histopathology of human root caries was examined in extracted teeth by different optical methods. The present part of the study details the sequential stages of initial caries in both cementum and peripheral dentin. Significant differences are shown between the mechanisms operating on the various dental hard tissues during development of caries. Histologically distinguishable reaction patterns depended on both the degree of the cariogenic challenge and the respective structural features of cementum and peripheral dentin. Earliest lesions, histologically visible as small clefts traversing c

Histologic and radiographic assessment of caries-like lesions localized at the crown margin.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS: Little is known about the impact of crown margins on the demineralization and remineralization process or on the interpretation of radiographs for the detection of early secondary caries. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to correlate the findings from 2 different radiographic techniques with the results of a histologic assessment of carieslike lesions at the crown margin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten fully impacted third molars were extracted and restored with complete metal crowns with chamfer preparations. For each tooth, the prepared margin ended in enamel on one sid

Facile Ag+-assisted bonding strategy to build a low-defect hybrid layer with intrinsic antibacterial and enzymolysis inhibitory properties.

As the most widely used material for dental tissue repair, dental resin composites face durability challenges, and their longevity critically depends on the hybrid layer's integrity. Incomplete adhesive infiltration within demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) creates structural defects in this layer, rendering it vulnerable to stress, enzymatic degradation, and bacterial invasion. These factors contribute to secondary caries, the predominant complication of resin-based restorations. Enhancing adhesive infiltration and the hybrid layer's antibacterial capacity is thus pivotal to extending the rest

Selective vs stepwise removal of deep carious lesions in primary molars: 24 months follow-up from a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: For well-defined deep (> 2/3 dentin extension) carious lesions, selective (SE) or stepwise (SW) carious tissue removals have been recommended, while there is limited comparative evidence for both. We compared SE and SW over 24 months in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: A two-arm superiority trial was conducted comparing SW/SE in primary molars without pulpal symptoms but well-defined deep lesions. Seventy-four children (1 molar/child) aged 3-9 years were recruited. In a first step, peripheral carious tissue was removed until hard dentin remained, while in proximity to the p

Adhesive interface between resin and etched dentin of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions.

The interfacial structure between an adhesive composite resin and the dentinal walls of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 60 seconds was investigated. Almost all dentinal tubules were occluded with rod-like structural depositions that remained undissolved even after acid conditioning. The hybrid layer between the adhesive resin and surface-demineralized dentin was found to be 0.3 to 3 microns, much thinner than that routinely found in either normal dentin or cariously affected dentin. The hybrid layer was thinnest at the occlusal walls of the cavity wher

The effect of Chlorohexidine, Er:YAG laser and diode laser 980 nm as dental cavity disinfectants on dentine morphology and microleakage of composite restoration: an in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION: Residual microorganisms may remain even after thorough mechanical cavity preparation, leading to secondary caries. Additionally, the smear layer generated during this process can impair the adhesion between composite resin and dentine and limit the penetration of disinfectants into dentinal tubules. This study aimed to compare the effects of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 980 nm diode laser, and Er:YAG laser as cavity disinfectants on dentine morphology, mineral content, and microleakage of composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty extracted sound human primary molars were r
