Cheiloscopy and dermatoglyphics in normal and obese individuals: A study in Indian subpopulation.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity has been steadily increasing worldwide. Reliable and noninvasive tools that can be used to diagnose such conditions may help us in mass screening and prevention. Finger prints and lip prints have been used as the genetic markers in some diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Studies to correlate a possible association of such markers among obese individuals have not been reported in India to date. The present study was conducted to determine and compare the lip print and finger print patterns in normal and obese individuals and also to evaluate any possible c

Dermatoglyphic characteristics of a population from the central Rhodopes (south Bulgaria).

The finger and palmar prints of a total of 386 individuals (182 males and 204 females) at an age between 10 and 18 years from the region of the villages Petkovo and Banite, situated along the river Malka Arda in the Central Rhodopes, were studied. The following dermatoglyphic traits were analyzed: pattern intensity index (PII), the main line or Cummin's index (MLI), the frequencies of the proximal palmar triradius (t), the true hypothenar patterns (Hy) and the accessory interdigital triradii (AIT). The specific dermatoglyphic complexes after Heet were also determined for the population under s

Dermatoglyphic analysis of polydactylies in man: identification of digital morphogenetic fields.

We analyzed dermatoglyphic patterns of patients with pre- and postaxial polydactylies. It was found that (i) an additional finger was always accompanied by the respective digital triradius, radiants and the main line, and (ii) in postaxial polydactylies a circular pattern of epidermal ridges around the 6th finger and a 2nd additional triradius are formed. On this basis it is suggested that the palmar main lines, radiants and digital triradii serve as marker structures and borders in the process of differentiation of digital morphogenetic fields out of a unitary field organized in a fashion des

[Evaluation of the metacarpophalangeal profile (MPP) and of the dermatoglyphic pattern in Crouzon's syndrome].

The evaluation of metacarpophalangeal profiles (MPP) and dermathoglyphics patterns in two families affected by Crouzon's syndrome differing from genic expressivity, showed indicative findings for brachidactyly and "broad thumb and hallux" character. These abnormalities show Crouzon's disease not to be a true craniofacial dysostosis and number it among the wide sphere of syndromes presenting acrocephalic alterations.

Dermatoglyphic patterns in patients with mitral valve prolapse: a clue to pathogenesis.

Fingerprints were obtained from 100 patients with mitral valve prolapse and compared with those of 100 control subjects matched for sex and race. Arches were found in 16.8 percent of all digital patterns in patients with mitral valve prolapse but in only 2.5 percent of all digits in the control group. Whereas no patient in the control group had four or more arches, 19 percent of patients with mitral valve prolapse had this finding. In addition, arches were found on 16 and 9 percent, respectively, of digits IV and V in patients with mitral valve prolapse but were not found on these digits in th

[Dermatoglyphic studies in cases of the Meyer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome].

A group of patients suffering from the Meyer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome were examined by dermatoglyphic methods. The results were compared with those obtained by examining a control group of healthy men and women. The dermatoglyphic studies revealed a pronounced influence of the X chromosome and the presence of a sex chromosome mosaicism with three or more X chromosomes, a finding that agrees with the results of cytological and chromosome analyses. The evidence of these dermatoglyphic studies strongly supports the hypothesis indicating a genetic origin of the disorder. The relation betw

Dermatoglyphics: A Noninvasive Diagnostic Tool in Predicting Class III Skeletal Malocclusion in Children.

BACKGROUND: Dermatoglyphics is a scientific study that deals with the epidermal ridges and their configurations on certain body parts such as fingers, palms, and soles. In humans, during the intrauterine life (IUL) the primary palate, lip, and dermal ridges are formed during the same period, the genetic code engineered in the genome normal or abnormal is mirrored on these developing structures. Thus making dermatoglyphic a preceding tool in dental diagnosis. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The study aimed at evaluating dermatoglyphics as a tool in diagnosing malocclusion by comparing qualitative and qua

Dermatoglyphics in patients with Cenani-Lenz type syndactyly: studies in a new case.

We describe an additional case of Cenani-Lenz syndactylism in a 4 1/2-year-old boy from a consanguineous Turkish family. The digital anomalies consisted partly of synostosis and partly of malformations of the phalanges. Although there was no radio-ulnar synostosis or abnormality of the bones of the feet, the findings are comparable to those described in the Cenani-Lenz type of syndactyly. We analysed the dermatoglyphics of our patient and compared them with those previously reported. We also investigated the relationship between the bony malformations and the dermatoglyphic patterns in our pat

An Assessment of Correlation between Dermatoglyphic Patterns and Sagittal Skeletal Discrepancies.

INTRODUCTION: Investigators over years have been fascinated by dermatoglyphic patterns which has led to the development of dermatoglyphics as a science with numerous applications in various fields other than being the best and most widely used method for personal identification. AIM: To assess the correlation between dermatoglyphic patterns and sagittal skeletal discrepancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 180 patients, aged 18-40 years, were selected from those who attended the outpatient clinic of the Deparment of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Mar Baselios Dental College, K

Reliability of specific finger dermatoglyphic patterns and their association with dental caries.

The etiology of dental caries is generally agreed to be a complex problem with many indirect factors that may obscure the direct cause or causes. There is substantial evidence that heredity plays an important role in this disease. Dermatoglyphics is a study that can be used to indicate congenital abnormalities. This study sought to determine a correlation between the prevalence of dental caries and dermatoglyphic fingerprint patterns, and thus assess the reliability of such patterns for identifying a susceptibility to dental caries. The results showed that the association between people with d

Role of dermatoglyphics as an indicator of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the oral cavity.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one name that causes panic and holds an undeserved high ranking as a killer. Another important condition which has become a major public health issue in South East Asia is oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). Not all the people using tobacco suffer from these diseases. Genetic predisposition might explain such an individual variability that can be predicted by using various cytogenetic markers. However, these studies are far more costly and complicated. So, dermatoglyphics may be of immense clinical significance to segregate those individuals who are

The dermatoglyphic characteristics of transsexuals: is there evidence for an organizing effect of sex hormones.

It has been proposed that gender identity and sexual orientation are influenced by the prenatal sex steroid milieu. Human dermatoglyphics and brain asymmetry have also been ascribed to prenatal hormone levels. This study investigated dermatoglyphics (total ridge count and finger ridge asymmetry) in 184 male-to-female transsexuals and 110 female-to-male transsexuals. In a subgroup, the relationship between dermatoglyphic asymmetry and spatial ability was tested. All investigations included controls. For all subjects hand preference and sexual orientation were noted. We hypothesized that the der

[The dermatoglyphic analysis of polydactyly and the segregation of the morphogenetic fields of the fingers in man].

We studied dermatoglyphic imprints of patients with preaxial or postaxial polydactyly. Development of the additional finger is shown to be always accompanied by the corresponding finger triradius and basic line; postaxial polydactylies are characterized by the circular epidermal ridges around the rudiment of the sixth finger and the presence of the second additional triradius. On the basis of these data we suggest that major lines of the palm and finger triradii serve as landmarks denoting the borders of individual morphogenetic fields of fingers during their segregation from general morphogen

An infant with ring 17 chromosome and unusual dermatoglyphs: a new syndrome?

A case of ring 17 chromosome in a 5-month-old male infant is investigated and compared with five previously reported cases. The findings commonly observed in these patients include mental and motor retardation, seizures, short stature, muscular hypotonia, and microcephaly among others. Dermatoglyphic studies showed an increased number of ulnar loops. More interestingly, bilateral transverse hypothenar creases were noted. Two of the reported cases also had unspecified genital abnormalities. The variation in clinical findings among these patients may be explained by a difference in the breakpoin
