The influence of periodic surfactant drip irrigation on the fate of petroleum pollutants in soil in arid regions.

Taking conventional sprinkler irrigation (SPI) as a control, this study explored the effect of drip irrigation (DRI) on the phytoremediation efficiency of petroleum-contaminated soil in arid areas. It investigated the migration and distribution of petroleum pollutants and water in the soil, plant physiological indicators, as well as the petroleum removal effect under the DRI. The results showed that compared with SPI, DRI could weaken the migration of petroleum to deep soil, enhance the absorption of petroleum pollutants by plant roots, and increase the biomass of ryegrass by 13.793%. Seasonal Metabolic Acclimatization Varies in Direction and Magnitude among Years in Two Arid-Zone Passerines.

Adaptive plasticity in avian thermal physiology is increasingly apparent, with a well-studied example being metabolic upregulation during cold winters in small birds inhabiting temperate and boreal latitudes. Recent studies have revealed greater variation in the direction and magnitude of seasonal metabolic adjustments among subtropical/tropical birds experiencing milder winters compared with higher-latitude counterparts, suggesting that patterns could vary among years within populations. We quantified seasonal metabolic variation (summer vs. winter) in Kalahari Desert populations of two Afrot

Endemic melioidosis in residents of desert region after atypically intense rainfall in central Australia, 2011.

After heavy rains and flooding during early 2011 in the normally arid interior of Australia, melioidosis was diagnosed in 6 persons over a 4-month period. Although the precise global distribution of the causal bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei remains to be determined, this organism can clearly survive in harsh and even desert environments outside the wet tropics.

[Fleas of the eastern Kyzyl Kum and their epizootic significance].

The fauna of fleas in the East Kisil-Kum includes 24 species. Different physicogeographic regions of sands are characterized by different spectra and number of species of fleas. The greatest share in collections is composed by Xenopsylla gerbilli caspica--the parasite of Rhombomys opimus. In autumn the other parasite of this rodent, Coptopsylla lamellifer, is a mass species. All the most significant and long changes in the number of these species are associated with changes in the density of their hosts' population. The most significant in epizootic respect is the flea X. gerbilli caspica from

Plant growth promotion and pathogen protection by the desert endophyte Pseudomonas grandensis R4-79.

Desert ecosystems have limited resources and harsh climatic conditions and cannot support cropping in most farming models. Recently, microbial applications have emerged as promising strategies to enhance plant survival and adaptation in such extreme environments. However, the beneficial microbes and our understanding of their functional roles and adaptation mechanisms in desert ecosystems remain underexplored. This study reports the isolation and characterization of the Pseudomonas sp. R4-79 strain from the arid environment of Wadi Rum, Jordan, associated with the desert plant Ifloga spicata.

Molecular and Serological Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Two Species of Rodents: Ctenodactylus gundi (Rodentia, Ctenodactylidae) and Psammomys obesus (Rodentia, Muridae) From South Tunisia.

The molecular and serological prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection was investigated among rodents living in desertic areas in the Tataouine district, in the south of Tunisia. A total number of 43 rodents were captured from four sites classified as arid and Saharan climatic zones. Sera, hearts, spleens and brains were collected from each rodent. Sera were tested for the presence of anti-T. gondii IgG by the ELISA technique. PCR was used to detect T. gondii DNA from different tissues. Two rodent species were identified as Ctenodactylus gundi (Rodentia, Ctenodactylidae) (N = 28; 65%) and Psa

Bionomics of Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Different Climates of Leishmaniasis in Fars Province, Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus and Sergentomya are distributed in the old-world regions and transmit leishmaniases through mammalian and reptile hosts. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most important diseases in Iran. Iranian sand flies belong to three Oriental, Palearctic, and Afrotropical Regions. Fars Province is located in Palearctic, but southern parts are affected Oriental region situations on phglebotomine population variety. Therefore, a comprehensive study was required on the vectors of the disease in this Province. METHODS: Regarding the approved role of the environmental factors

Dryland Soil Rewetting Induces Strong Volatile Organic Compound Emissions With Potential to Form Ozone and Aerosols.

Drylands cover nearly half of Earth's terrestrial surface and are expanding under climate change. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly influence atmospheric chemistry, yet microbial VOC emissions from dryland soils remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate VOC emissions associated with petrichor-the characteristic scent following rainfall after prolonged drought-across a steep aridity gradient extending into the Negev Desert. Soil rewetting triggered strong VOC fluxes (1-3.5 nmol m-2 s-1 ground area) dominated by sesquiterpenes and benzenoids, with emission patterns an

Epidemiological study for the assessment of health risks associated with graywater reuse for irrigation in arid regions.

Graywater reuse is rapidly gaining popularity as a viable source of reclaimed water, mainly for garden irrigation and toilet flushing. The purpose of this study was to determine, by epidemiological survey, the risk for gastroenteritis symptoms associated with graywater reuse. The study comprised a weekly health questionnaire answered by both graywater users and non-graywater users (control group) regarding their health status over a period of 1year, and periodic sampling for graywater quality. Participants were also asked to respond to a one-time lifestyle questionnaire to assess their level o

The effect of cactus spines on light interception and Photosystem II for three sympatric species of Opuntia from the Mojave Desert.

Cactus spines reduce herbivory, direct water toward roots and reduce the impacts of high- and low-temperature extremes. Yet, shading of stems by spines reduces incident photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD), photosynthesis and growth. This study compared spinescence, PFD interception, stem temperature, Photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and xanthophyll pigment composition for three species of cacti from the Mojave Desert, CA. The species vary in spinescence: Opuntia basilaris, which has no central or radial spines; Opuntia erinacea, which is densely covered with spines; and Opuntia phaeac

Green-blue water system innovations for upgrading of smallholder farming systems--a policy framework for development.

Rainfed agriculture and other depletion of water by green flows have as yet an untapped potential for improving livelihoods in semi-arid areas through income and food security. A vivid evidence of this is seen in the fact that, although working full time on food production, majority of smallholder farmers are frequently affected by shortage of food or famines. At the same time enough examples exist to show that productivity of labor, water and land under rainfed farming can be doubled or even trebled through proper land management and improved agronomic inputs supported by modest investments t

Results of using the serological method of epidemiological investigation of plague foci in the Muyunkum and Eastern Kyzylkum deserts in 1978-1982.

Results of serological examination of 81,853 mammals from the Muyunkum and 26,303 from the Eastern Kyzylkum deserts were compared with results of a corresponding bacteriological examination for plague. In both foci and in all phases throughout the epizootic of plague, the serological method made it possible to detect infected animals 6-10 times more frequently in comparison with the bacteriological method. The big meriones mice, i.e., the basic carriers of plague in natural foci, were found to be infected considerably more (in percentage) frequently than the meridian meriones. Differences in t

Mechanisms underlying the health effects of desert sand dust.

Desertification and climate change indicate a future expansion of the global area of dry land and an increase in the risk of drought. Humans may therefore be at an ever-increasing risk of frequent exposure to, and resultant adverse health effects of desert sand dust. This review appraises a total of 52 experimental studies that have sought to identify mechanisms and intermediate endpoints underlying epidemiological evidence of an impact of desert dust on cardiovascular and respiratory health. Toxicological studies, in main using doses that reflect or at least approach real world exposures duri

A rather dry subject; investigating the study of arid-associated microbial communities.

Almost one third of Earth's land surface is arid, with deserts alone covering more than 46 million square kilometres. Nearly 2.1 billion people inhabit deserts or drylands and these regions are also home to a great diversity of plant and animal species including many that are unique to them. Aridity is a multifaceted environmental stress combining a lack of water with limited food availability and typically extremes of temperature, impacting animal species across the planet from polar cold valleys, to Andean deserts and the Sahara. These harsh environments are also home to diverse microbial co

The epidemiology of Sarcocystis spp. in cattle of Western Australia.

Oesophagus samples from 714 cattle from Western Australia were examined by artificial digestion to detect the presence of Sarcocystis spp. The overall prevalence of infection was 52%. The prevalence of infection increased with age and was highest in the entire males (92%). The prevalence was lower in cattle which originated from arid and semiarid regions (9 and 31% respectively) than those from tropical (87%) and temperate (60%) regions. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed and it is concluded that environmental and management factors as well as host age and sex influence the p

[Soil Microbial Nutrient Limitation Characteristics During Anthropogenic Transition from Desert Steppe to Shrubland].

The practice of planting xerophytic shrubs for vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid grasslands has become a common model. In fact, it is accelerating the process of regional grassland shrub encroachment. At present, studies on the ecological consequences of anthropogenic shrub encroachment on grassland ecosystems have been gradually carried out. However, the changes in soil microbial nutrient utilization and limitation during the anthropogenic transition from desert grasslands to shrublands have not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, a representative grassland-shrubland mosaic formed

Isolation and characterization of biosurfactant-producing bacteria from the Thar Desert.

The Thar Desert, one of the most extreme arid ecosystems, harbours a diverse and resilient microbial community adapted to high temperatures, low moisture, and osmotic stress. In this study, soil samples collected from sand dunes in Churu, Rajasthan, were explored for the isolation of biosurfactant-producing bacteria. A total of ten morphologically distinct bacterial isolates were obtained and screened for biosurfactant activity using drop collapse (DC), emulsification index percentage (EA24) %, surface tension (ST), and interfacial tension (IFT) assays. Among them, three isolates S4, S6, and S
