The enteric nervous system (ENS) forms intimate connections with many other intestinal cell types, including immune cells and bacterial consortia resident in the intestinal lumen. In this review, we highlight contributions of the zebrafish model to understanding interactions among these cells. Zebrafish is a powerful model for forward genetic screens, several of which have uncovered genes previously unknown to be important for ENS development. More recently, zebrafish has emerged as a model for testing functions of genes identified in human patients or large-scale human susceptibility screens.

Rodents of the genus Peromyscus (deer mice) are the most prevalent native North American mammals. Peromyscus species are used in a wide range of research including toxicology, epidemiology, ecology, behavioral, and genetic studies. Here they provide a useful model for demonstrations of artificial insemination. Methods similar to those displayed here have previously been used in several deer mouse studies, yet no detailed protocol has been published. Here we demonstrate the basic method of artificial insemination. This method entails extracting the testes from the rodent, then isolating the spe

Small perturbations of young animals' sensory experience or hormonal milieu have been shown to alter ontogenetic pathways and to potentially produce huge effects on CNS functioning and behaviour later in life. From a social point of view, variables such as the expression of affiliative bonding and of playful interactions among littermates, the quantity/quality of maternal care, or episodes of maternal or sibling deprivation during critical phases in development, seem to interfere as epigenetic factors with the rigidly ordered temporal sequences of events that occur during the ontogenesis of CN

PURPOSE: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a predominantly type 2 inflammatory disease with a high symptom burden. Data are lacking on the comparative health status of patients with CRSwNP. This analysis compared baseline physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and overall health status of patients with severe CRSwNP enrolled in a Phase 3 clinical trial with general population norms and with other chronic diseases.
METHODS: In this post hoc cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the SINUS-24 study (NCT02912468), HRQoL was measured using the 36-ite

Tooth agenesis is the failure of tooth bud development, causing definitive absence of the tooth. It is the most common dental anomaly, affecting up to one-quarter of the general population. The main cause is related to abnormal function of specific genes which play key roles during odontogenesis, particularly MSX1 and PAX9. MSX1 is a transcription factor highly expressed in the mesenchyme of developing tooth germs, whereas PAX9 is a transcription factor that shows a direct relationship with craniofacial development, particularly the formation of the palate and teeth. Despite the high frequency

Roundworms belong to a diverse phylum (Nematoda) which is comprised of many parasitic species including whipworms (genus Trichuris). These worms have adapted to a biological niche within the host and exhibit unique morphological characteristics compared with other nematodes. Although these adaptations are known, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. The availability of genomes and transcriptomes of some whipworms now enables detailed studies of their molecular biology. Here, we defined and curated the full complement of an important class of enzymes, the protein kinases (kinomes)

Liberal transfusions of adult platelets increase preterm infant morbidity and mortality. This harm may be because of functional differences between neonatal and adult platelets. Preclinical murine models remain essential for investigating the underlying mechanisms. A prerequisite for developing and using these models is a cross-species comparison of developmentally regulated molecules in platelets. The objective of this study was to define proteins and biological pathways that differ between neonatal and adult platelets in mice and ascertain developmentally regulated molecules and pathways tha

BACKGROUND: The dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic parasite affecting humans and livestock across the globe. Basic research on the molecular biology and genetics of E. granulosus improves our understanding of the biology and potential drug targets in various developmental stages of E. granulosus in both definitive and intermediate hosts. There has been increasing interest in the identification of microRNAs in parasitic organisms. The purpose of the current study was to compare the activity of a selected profile of miRNAs in different developmental stages of E. granulosus.

The biology of masculinization is fundamentally important for understanding the embryonic developmental processes that are involved in the development of the male reproductive tract, external genitalia, and also the tumorigenesis of prostate cancer. The molecular mechanisms of masculinization are of interest to many researchers and clinicians involved in varied fields, including molecular developmental biology, cancer research, endocrinology, and urology. Androgen signalling is mediated by the nuclear androgen receptor, which has fundamental roles in masculinization during development. Various

Ectodysplasin (Eda) is the most studied tumor necrosis ligand in the field of developmental biology. In all vertebrates studied so far, inactivating germline mutations in Eda lead to the genetic disease called hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). In humans, HED is a life-threatening condition in particular in infants due to absent or severely reduced sweating leading to hyperthermia. HED is also characterized by sparse hair, and oligo- or anodontia. Research of the Eda pathway has not only increased our knowledge on ectodermal appendage development and etiology of developmental disorders,

Adaptation is a central precept of biology; it provides a framework for identifying functional significance. We equate mammalian development with adaptation, by viewing the developmental sequence as a series of adaptations to a stereotyped sequence of habitats. In this way development is adaptation. The Norway rat is used as a mammalian model, and the sequence of habitats that is used to define its adaptive-developmental sequence is (a) the uterus, (b) the mother's body, (c) the huddle, and (d) the coterie of pups as they gain independence. Then, within this framework and in relation to each o

Advances in developmental biology combined with progress in human genetics are helping us decipher how the craniofacial region develops and how the consequences of misdirected development result in malformation. This review describes the molecular etiology of a number of craniofacial developmental anomalies. The more common craniofacial anomalies cleft lip and palate and craniosynostosis, as well as cleidocranial dysplasia, hemifacial microsomia, holoprosencephaly, enlarged parietal foramina, Treacher Collins syndrome and cherubism are discussed.

Lung branching morphogenesis has been studied for decades, but the underlying developmental mechanisms are still not fully understood. Cellular movements dynamically change during the branching process, but it is difficult to observe long-term cellular dynamics by in vivo or tissue culture experiments. Therefore, developing an in vitro experimental model of bronchial tree would provide an essential tool for developmental biology, pathology, and systems biology. In this study, we succeeded in reconstructing a bronchial tree in vitro by using primary human bronchial epithelial cells. A high conc

For over half a century, developmental scientists have used autonomic measures to draw inferences about the physiological mechanisms underlying infant attention, self-regulation, and social behavior. These interpretations rest on a binary model of the autonomic nervous system that divides it into opposing sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, a model established more than a century ago. This review traces the historical description of the autonomic nervous system and summarizes three challenges to the traditional model with evidence from contemporary biology and neuroscience suggesting tha

The need to discover new treatments for human schistosomiasis has been an important driver for molecular research on schistosomes, a major breakthrough being the publication of the Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum genomes in 2009. This 'Primer' considers recent advances in the understanding of schistosome biology by providing a snapshot of selected areas of contemporary functional schistosome research, including that on the genome, the tegument, cell signalling and developmental biology, offering biologists a valuable insight into the life of these fascinating parasites at the bas

Avian embryos are widely used models in developmental biology and biomedical research, yet systematic comparative morphology across specific pathogen-free (SPF) poultry species remains limited. We investigated the embryonic development of three SPF duck breeds Shanma (HSM), Shaoxing (HBW), and Jinding (HJD) and SPF White Leghorn chickens (BM8 line) under controlled SPF conditions. Fertilized eggs were incubated at standardized temperature and humidity, and embryonic growth was monitored daily. Developmental stages were classified according to the Hamburger-Hamilton (HH) system and grouped into

SUMMARY: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are single stranded gene regulators of 18-25 bp in length. They play a crucial role in regulating several biological processes in insects. However, the functions of miRNA in Glossina pallidipes, one of the biological vectors of African animal trypanosomosis in sub-Saharan Africa, remain poorly characterized. We used a combination of both molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques to identify miRNA genes at different developmental stages (larvae, pupae, teneral and reproductive unmated adults, gravid females) and sexes of G. pallidipes. We identified 157 mature
