Physical Activity Patterns in Adolescents and Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Limited information exists on the descriptive epidemiology of physical activity (PA) in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). The purpose of this study was to report device-measured PA and sedentary time for individuals with ID (age 10-70 yr) eligible to participate in PA promotion (i.e., self-reported PA <60-90 min·wk-1) and weight loss (i.e., body mass index ≥25 kg·m-2) clinical trials. We aimed to examine patterns of PA by diagnosis within a day and across days and US meteorological seasons. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used baseline accelerometer data from

Survey results on training in developmental disabilities in Canadian psychiatry residency programs.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health problems in children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities (DD) are an underserviced clinical area. Although the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada requires that experiences with patients with DD must be included during psychiatry residency training, the type and extent of this experience is not specified. The purpose of this study was to examine the current educational opportunities regarding DD in Canadian psychiatry residency programs. METHODS: A survey asking about training in DD was sent to psychiatry residency directors at all

Unique Pain Responses in Different Etiological Subgroups of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

We studied whether there exist variations in pain responses between different intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) etiologies. Self-reports and facial expressions (Facial Action Coding System = FACS) were recorded during experimental pressure stimuli and compared among 31 individuals with IDD-13 with cerebral palsy (CP), nine with Down syndrome (DS), nine with unspecified origin (UIDD)-and among 15 typically developing controls (TDCs). The CP and DS groups had higher pain ratings and FACS scores compared to the UIDD and TDC groups, and steeper stimulus-response functions. The DS gro

Ed Zigler's developmental approach to intellectual disabilities: Past, present, and future contributions.

Comprising two parts, Ed Zigler's developmental approach has greatly influenced how one conceptualizes children with intellectual disabilities (ID). In part one, Zigler championed a "two-group approach" concerning the cause of children's ID. He distinguished persons with a clear, organic cause of their ID from those displaying no clear cause. Members of this "organic" group often displayed IQs below 50 and co-occurring physical-medical conditions. The second, "cultural-familial" group, mostly showed IQs of 50-70, did not possess co-occurring physical or health problems, and often came from fam

Quality of Dietary Intake in Children With Developmental Disabilities: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental disabilities have a high prevalence of overweight and obesity. The role and contribution of their diet to weight status is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study describes the dietary quality of children with spina bifida and Down syndrome compared with typically developing peers. METHODS: Dietary intakes of 8 children with spina bifida or Down syndrome and 4 children without developmental disabilities, aged 8 to 18 years, were collected using six 24-hour dietary recalls through Facetime. Dietary quality was assessed by application of the Heal

Comparison of interventions to treat prompt dependence for children with developmental disabilities.

Prior research has examined interventions to prevent prompt dependence from occurring during the training of novel skills. Nevertheless, the relative efficacy and efficiency of different intervention procedures may be idiosyncratic across learners, suggesting the potential benefit of an individualized assessment. The purpose of the current study was to extend the literature on prompt dependence by comparing interventions for 3 participants with developmental disabilities who consistently engaged in correct responses following prompts but did not perform tasks independently. We compared the eff

The Role of Gender in Violence Experienced by Adults With Developmental Disabilities.

Violence against people with developmental disabilities is a highly prevalent yet understudied phenomenon. In particular, there is a paucity of literature surrounding the role of gender and the experiences of men. Using a cross-sectional study design, we surveyed 350 people with diverse developmental disabilities about experiences of abuse, perpetrators of abuse, and their physical and mental health status. These data were analyzed to determine whether gender influenced these domains. Statistical methods included chi-square, independent t tests, logistic regression, and hierarchical multiple r

Stimulus pairing training for Kanji reading skills in students with developmental disabilities.

Japanese students with developmental disabilities often exhibit difficulties in reading, particularly in Kanji (ideogram) reading, and in acquiring the equivalence relations between pictures, written words, and sounds. Previous research suggested that one student with autism could acquire Kanji reading along with equivalence relations through stimulus pairing training. However, maintenance rates tended to be very low, possibly due to the lack of picture stimuli. In this study, we examined the acquisition and maintenance of Kanji reading skills through stimulus pairing training using correspond

A nutritional rehabilitation program for persons with severe physical and developmental disabilities.

Our purpose was to design and implement a nutritional rehabilitation program for persons with severe developmental disabilities who resided in a long-term-care facility or a group home. We used weight for height (WH) to classify residents of both facilities into three groups: group 1 (n=32), WH less than 5th percentile (Z scores < or = -1.650), goal=gain weight; group 2 (n=21), WH between the 5th and 85th percentile (Z scores ranging from -1.645 to +1.030), goal=maintain present rate of weight gain; and group 3 (n=8), WH greater than 85th percentile (Z scores > or = +1.036), goal=slow down rat

Effects of reinforcement choice on task responding in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The effects of reinforcement choice on task performance were examined with 6 individuals who had been diagnosed with severe to profound mental retardation. Five highly preferred items were identified for each participant via stimulus preference assessments. Participants then were exposed to choice and no-choice conditions that were alternated within reversal and multielement designs. During choice sessions, participants were permitted to select between two preferred stimuli contingent on responding. During no-choice sessions, the therapist delivered a single item contingent on responding. Pref

An analysis of a group teaching procedure for persons with developmental disabilities.

This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. Three teachers and three groups of students participated. Results showed that the teachers increased their rates of questions and instructions, positive feedback, and use of functional materials, but they reduced their rate of prompts to almost zero. Food Insecurity Among People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Food insecurity disproportionately impacts people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD) and their families. This scoping review explores food insecurity in this population, considering prevalence estimates and disparities, consequences, risk factors, and protective factors. A systematic search identified 21 relevant sources. Food insecurity was consistently reported at higher levels among PWIDD compared to those without disabilities across sources. Consequences include worsened nutritional challenges, diagnosis-specific behavioral changes, and caregiver emotional distress. R

Dental Surgeries in Hospitals and Surgery Centers for Children With Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with intellectual disabilities and related conditions (IDRC) and autism often require dental treatment in surgical settings. Studies of older adults suggest that ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) can reduce costs without reducing quality, but it is unknown whether this is true for children with autism and IDRC and dental surgeries. This study compared outcomes among children with IDRC and autism receiving dental caries-related surgeries at ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs). METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used Medicaid data from 29 stat
