[A contribution to the problem of reducing the size of the tongue for orthodontic purposes].

After a summary of the theoretic basis for the indication of an operative reduction of the tongue by the therapy of malocclusion, the results of the tests were individually analysed. A sure influence of the reduction of the tongue can only be proved for the averting of a threatening relapse after an operation of progenia. The ability of speech stayed without any influence in 12 cases and in 3 cases it got better or worse. The numerous late sequels in form and function of the tongue make it necessary to be carefully in indication of the reduction of the tongue by the therapy of malocclusion.

Interdisciplinary management of dental anomalies: fusion and supernumerary teeth.

A 16-year-old boy presented with a fused permanent maxillary left central incisor with a supplemental tooth and an additional supplemental tooth lingual to the permanent maxillary right central incisor. Following leveling, alignment, and endodontic therapy, the maxillary fused left central incisor was sectioned and the mesial portion extracted as planned. Fixed orthodontic treatment commenced after 10 days to align the maxillary anterior segment. After completion, the midline diastema was closed with veneers. This case highlights the treatment options of a fused tooth and the need for multidis

[Some environmental and hygienic aspects of preschool children's health in an industrial town].

The results of a medical genetic study of the spread of congenital morphogenetic types (CMGT) among 3-7-year-old children living in Magnitogorsk whose territory is highly polluted with chemical compounds are presented. In Magnitogorsk, the mean of CMGT cases per child is 2.89, which is much greater than the respective values for environmentally favorable cities and towns in Russia. The most common signs are as follows: diastema (137.79 cases per 1000 children), clinodactyly (135.98 per 1000), epicanthus (122.44 per 1000), and wide umbilical ring (110.71 per 1000).

Full veneer versus traditional veneer preparation: a discussion of interproximal extension.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Traditional veneer preparation has come to represent an almost universally accepted guideline of veneer preparation. It calls for an interproximal finish line at or just into the contact point. However, in certain situations, such an approach can have functional and esthetic limitations. PURPOSE: This article reviews those functional and esthetic limitations and discusses an alternative technique, the full veneer preparation. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed in relation to veneer cases with malaligned teeth, diastema, discoloration, black s

[Early orthodontic treatment].

Several preventive procedures are recommended for the interception of early malocclusion. Therefore some important characteristics of normal dental development are mentioned. This preventive approach is focused around selected topics as forced bite, midline diastema and retarded eruption. This influence of functional disturbances on dentofacial morphology is discussed. An overview of possible therapy by the general dentist is presented for problems, aroused by thumb- and fingersucking, agenesis of upper lateral and mandibular second premolars as well as early loss of deciduous molars. Finally,

Comparative evaluation of modified frenectomy with papilla preservation flap versus conventional technique in upper labial frenectomy: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cosmetic concerns among patients have led to an increased demand for dental treatments aimed at achieving a perfect smile. One of the main cosmetic issues in adults is the gap between the upper incisors, known as diastema, and the upper lip frenulum is often a contributing factor to this condition. Therefore, it is imaportant to focus on this aspect. OBJECTIVE: To explore a new technique for cutting the upper lip frenulum in patients with a gap between the central incisors while avoiding the negative effects of the traditional technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized c

Orodental malformations associated with human MSX1 sequence variants.

BACKGROUND: MSX1 sequence variants have been known to cause human tooth agenesis (TA) with or without orofacial clefts. However, their roles during the whole processes of tooth development are not fully understood. This study aimed to characterize a 4-membered family with TA carrying a novel MSX1 pathogenic variant and investigate the disease mechanism. METHODS: The authors conducted whole exome analysis to define the disease-causing sequence variant. They performed microcomputed tomography, morphometric analyses, transcriptome profiling, and molecular characterization to study the affected t

[The second primary molar in the lower jaw in cases of agenesis of the second premolar; use it or break it?].

In cases of agenesis of the mandibular second premolar, a choice can be made from among several treatment options. Besides preserving the second primary molar, it can be decided to close the diastema orthodontically, following extraction of the primary molar. This can be done in several ways: full or partial (hemisection) removal of the primary molar. The procedure for a hemisection initially consists of removing only the distal part of the relevant primary molar, in order to preserve the breadth of the alveolar process and to enable spontaneous mesialization of the first permanent molar. Extensive dentigerous cyst associated with a mesiodens: CT findings.

The most common of the supernumerary teeth in humans are mesiodentes, which arise in the midline of the maxilla between the central incisors. The most common pathologic findings associated with a mesiodens are retention of the adjacent incisors, malposition, and diastema. The development of a dentigerous cyst in association with an impacted mesiodens is relatively uncommon. We report the case of a 35-year-old man with an extensive dentigerous cyst associated with a mesiodens who presented with a painful swelling in the left nasolabial area. We discuss the imaging findings in this case, particu

Hypodontia in an adolescent with the HbSC genotype: a case report.

The haemoglobin SC (HbSC) genotype is a variant form of haemoglobin disorder that often presents less frequent clinical symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD) than the homozygous state (HbSS). Various dental abnormalities, such as enamel hypoplasia, hypomineralization, midline diastema and delayed eruption of the teeth, have been associated with SCD. This report presents the case of an adolescent patient with HbSC who had hypodontia, transposition of a permanent canine, retained primary teeth, multiple carious lesions and poor oral hygiene complicated by sickle cell crisis. This report focuses

Palatal radicular multigrooves associated with severe periodontal defects in maxillary central incisors.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a rare condition of palatal radicular multigrooves on teeth 11 and 21 with severe periodontal defects and the findings at 3-year follow-up. METHOD: Radiculoplasty using hand curettes and rotary burs were used to remove the multigrooves on the root surfaces and change the wrinkled root form to the relatively flat and smooth normal root morphology. Minor tooth movement and frenotomy were performed for a diastema between teeth 11 and 21. Supportive periodontal therapy started immediately after completion of the active treatment. RESULTS: Improved healthy p

A Multidisciplinary Aesthetic Treatment Approach for Peg Lateral of the Maxillary Incisors.

Developmental anomaly of the maxillary lateral incisors most commonly leads to the occurrence of peg lateral. It is a variant of microdontia where the lateral incisors are smaller than the normal size. This appears as unilaterally or bilaterally. This condition is characterised by the converging of the mesial and distal surfaces forming a cone shape. A variety of treatment options exist for this anomaly including orthodontic treatment, restorative technique and veneer. This case report deals with an individual presenting with peg lateral of the maxillary arch along with midline diastema. The m

Reduction glossectomy of congenital macroglossia due to lymphangioma.

Macroglossia is a rare clinical condition defined as an enlarged tongue. Macroglossia can cause structural deformities like diastema and disproportionate mandibular growth and present functional disorders such as dysarthria, dysphonia, and respiratory problems. A 7-year-old boy who had lymphangiomatous macroglossia was treated with a reduction glossectomy by anchor-shaped combination of a U-shape and modified key-hole resection. Postoperatively, the reduced tongue was contained completely within the oral cavity, but open bite remained due to prognathism. Sensory and motor nerves to the tongue
