Full control of hidradenitis suppurativa requires the prevention of new lesions. These appear to be induced by a complex series of hormonally driven molecular activities that lead to obstruction of the follicular duct, rupture and destruction of the sebaceous glands, the development of deep dermal sinuses that subsequently rupture to the surface, and production of an invasive subcutaneous mass that is resistant to medical therapy. Preliminary observations suggest that the use of a healthy and fully natural zero dairy and low glycemic-load diet may provide relief from progression of the lesions

BACKGROUND: Congenital chylothorax (CC) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in newborns. It is defined as an accumulation of chyle in the pleural cavity. The few publications regarding medical management and therapeutic dietary intervention motivated us to share our experience.
METHODS: Neonates diagnosed with congenital chylothorax and treated at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital between 2013 and 2020 (n = 6, gestational age: 36 3/7, 32 5/7, 36 4/7, 35 0/7, 35 4/7, 37 3/7 weeks) were eligible for this report. The cornerstones of treatment for chylothorax conventionally c

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inborn error of phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism that, if untreated, causes Phe accumulation in the brain leading to neurophysiologic alterations and poor outcomes. Lifelong management centers on dietary Phe restriction, yet long-term complete metabolic control is unachievable for many adults. High blood Phe levels or chronic Phe and intact protein restriction in the diet may lead to somatic comorbidities. A systematic literature review was conducted to evaluate somatic comorbidities experienced by adults with PKU.
METHODS: Clinical and observational stud

Functional bowel disorders, classified as disorders of gut-brain interaction, are highly prevalent and characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in the absence of identifiable structural abnormalities. The pathophysiology of these disorders is multifactorial. Given this complexity, a symptom-directed treatment approach is essential. As the majority of these patients report food-related symptoms, first-line therapy typically involves the implementation of general dietary and lifestyle advice, as recommended by the British Dietetic Association's (BDA) evidence-based guidelines and U.K's

Phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency, commonly named phenylketonuria (PKU) is a disorder of phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism inherited with an autosomal recessive trait. It is characterized by high blood and cerebral Phe levels, resulting in intellectual disabilities, seizures, etc. Early diagnosis and treatment of the patients prevent major neuro-cognitive deficits. Treatment consists of a lifelong restriction of Phe intake, combined with the supplementation of special medical foods, such as Amino Acid medical food (AA-mf), enriched in tyrosine (Tyr) and other amino acids and nutrients to

Protein content reduction in broiler breeder diets has been increasingly investigated. However, broiler breeders reared on low protein diets are characterized by a deterioration of the feather condition. Furthermore, polydipsia induced by controlled feed intake increases litter moisture and as a consequence pododermatitis. This project aimed to study the litter moisture, pododermatitis and feather condition of breeders fed with a 25% reduced balanced protein (RP) diet during the rearing and laying period over three successive generations. The experiment started with two treatments for the F0 g

It is well known that large dose of leucine reduces the food intake and causes growth retardation in experimental animals when leucine is given with a low-protein diet. However, the mechanism for the anorectic effect of leucine has not yet been clarified. We demonstrate here that the anorectic effect of leucine was significantly reduced in a vagotomized rat.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates whether the nutritional state of guinea pigs is a risk factor for the ototoxic side effects of cisplatin, gentamicin, and gentamicin in combination with ethacrynic acid.
METHODS: A normal nutritional state was maintained with a standard 18.5% protein diet while nutritional deficiency was produced by feeding a 7% protein diet. Hearing loss was measured by auditory evoked brainstem responses.
RESULTS: Guinea pigs on the low protein diet had a significantly higher drug-induced hearing loss. Cisplatin-induced hearing loss was 32 dB in undernourished animals bu

Paired groups of rats whose growth rates were restricted to similar degrees by feeding either protein- or energy-deficient diets had very different patterns of nitrogen metabolism. The protein-deficient animals showed evidence of dysadaptation in that liver protein was much more reduced than in the energy-deficient ones, whereas total muscle protein was higher. Plasma albumin concentrations decreased only in animals fed the low protein diet; with energy restriction a small but significant rise in albumin was seen. Although plasma amino acid concentration fell in both protein- and energy-restri

A number of epidemiological studies worldwide have demonstrated a relationship between poor early growth and an increased susceptibility to insulin resistance, visceral obesity, type 2 diabetes and other features of the metabolic syndrome in adulthood. However, the mechanistic basis of this relationship and the relative roles of genes and the environment remain a subject of debate. The 'thrifty phenotype' hypothesis proposes that poor fetal nutrition leads to programming of metabolism and an adult phenotype that is adapted to poor but not plentiful nutrition. The maternal reduced-protein rat m

AIMS: Therapies to prevent vein graft disease, a major problem in cardiovascular and lower extremity bypass surgeries, are currently lacking. Short-term preoperative protein restriction holds promise as an effective preconditioning method against surgical stress in rodent models, but whether it can improve vein graft patency after bypass surgery is undetermined. Here, we hypothesized that short-term protein restriction would limit vein graft disease via up-regulation of cystathionine γ-lyase and increased endogenous production of the cytoprotective gaseous signalling molecule hydrogen sulfide.

Reducing protein intake in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) limits glomerular stress induced by hyperfiltration and can prevent the progression of kidney disease; data in pregnancy are limited. The aim of this study is to analyze the results obtained in CKD patients who followed a plant-based moderately protein-restricted diet during pregnancy in comparison with a propensity-score-matched cohort of CKD pregnancies on unrestricted diets. A total of 52 CKD pregnancies followed up with a protein-restricted plant-based diet (Torino, Italy) were matched with a propensity score based on ki

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to summarize the current evidence on the effect of very-low-, low-, and high-protein diets on outcomes related to chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and bone health in patients with CKD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Dietary protein restriction in the form of low- and very-low-protein diets have been used to slow down the progression of CKD. These diets can be supplemented with alpha-keto acid (KA) analogues of amino acids. Observational and randomized controlled trials have shown improvements in biochemical markers of CKD-MBD, including reductio

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) was evaluated in 157 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). It was noted that HPT developed early in CRF at a time when plasma calcium and phosphorous were within normal limits. As creatinine clearance decreased below 80 mL/m, there was a significant decrease in plasma calcitriol and a slow and progressive significant increment in plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH). The effect of dietary intake of calcium and phosphorous was evaluated in these patients with early renal failure (ERF). They were divided into two groups. Group A was placed on a protein- and p

Preclinical data suggests that protein and calorie restriction (PCR) might improve treatment tolerability without impairing antitumor efficacy. Therefore, we have studied the influence of PCR on irinotecan pharmacokinetics and toxicity. In this crossover trial, patients with liver metastases of solid tumors were included and randomized to treatment with irinotecan preceded by 5 days of PCR (~ 30% caloric and ~ 70% protein restriction) during the first cycle and a second cycle preceded by a normal diet or vice versa. Pharmacokinetic blood sampling and biopsies of both healthy liver and liver me

We investigated the effects of energy restriction on tissue riboflavin depletion and subsequent repletion of deficient tissues. Groups of male Sprague Dawley rats with average body weights between 268 and 275g were placed on energy-restricted diets consisting of 8g (31kcal or 130kJ) per day of a basal diet adequate in all other nutrients and either 12mg of riboflavin/kg or no added riboflavin. The ad libitum controls received additional energy as a mixture of sucrose, starch, and corn oil (10:3:1 by wt). No significant difference in the degree of riboflavin deficiency was detected between ener

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy is the most common glomerulonephritis syndrome in the world, yet there is currently no cure. While blood pressure control, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibition, and immunosuppression may slow disease progression, low-protein diets, defined as a daily dietary protein intake of 0.6 to 0.8 g/kg body weight, may also decrease immune complex deposition and disease severity, as evidenced in animal models. The link between secondary immunoglobulin A nephropathy and celiac disease has also led to the rise of gluten-free diets and zinc supplementation as potentia

The developmental growth of the combined right and left ventricles was followed from weaning to senility in rats receiving an unrestricted diet (controls) or pair fed to one half of this food intake. The normal developmental increases in the ventricular weight, protein mass, and nucleic acid contents were retarded by this long term dietary regimen. Although the same maximum values for each variable were ultimately reached in the ventricles of the calorie restricted animals, these were achieved approximately one year later (that is, well into the extended lifespan afforded by such underfeeding)

Background: Dietary management of phenylketonuria (PKU) focuses on restricting phenylalanine (Phe) intake. The European PKU guidelines and the PKU Dietary Handbook recommend a simplified PKU diet, allowing unrestricted consumption of many low-Phe foods, called free foods. While this approach may reduce the treatment burden for patients, its implementation varies. This study investigated practices of Swedish metabolic dietitians regarding the simplified diet and the use of free foods for classical PKU (cPKU) and compared these with European recommendations. Methods: A survey was distributed to
