Effects of dietary lead exposure on vitamin levels in great tit nestlings - An experimental manipulation.

Exposure to metal pollution negatively affects animal physiology, including nutrient metabolism, but in the wild an effect can seldom be attributed to a single metal. Moreover, little is known about how the metabolism of vitamins, essential micronutrients for developing juveniles, is affected by toxic metals. Therefore we experimentally investigated the effects of lead (Pb), a widespread toxic metal, on four fat-soluble vitamins A (total and retinol), D3, E (total and α-tocopherol) and K and carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin and unidentified) in great tit (Parus major) nestlings. In addition to

A dietary-wide association study (DWAS) of environmental metal exposure in US children and adults.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to toxic metals occurs through diet but few studies have comprehensively examined dietary sources of exposure in US populations. PURPOSE: Our goal was to perform a novel dietary-wide association study (DWAS) to identify specific dietary sources of lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic exposure in US children and adults. METHODS: We combined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with data from the US Department of Agriculture's Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database to examine associations betw

Natural occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in marketed foods and risk estimates of dietary exposure in Koreans.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is an unavoidable food contaminant. To evaluate the potential health risk of AFB1 to Koreans posed by food consumption, we determined the natural occurrence of AFB1 in food and estimated the excess risk for liver cancer through dietary exposure to AFB1. A total of 694 food samples collected from six different regions of South Korea were analyzed for their AFB, content. One hundred four of the 694 samples were found to give positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) readings for AFB1 and were further investigated with high-performance liquid chromatography. Subchronic dietary exposure of rats to cadmium alters the metabolism of metals essential to bone health.

Cadmium (Cd) was recently identified as a risk factor for osteoporosis. Skeletal damage may be the critical effect of low-level long-term exposure to Cd in the general population exposed via food, but the mechanisms behind this are not clearly understood. We investigated the effect of dietary Cd exposure on metals involved in bone turnover. Female rats received a Cd-supplemented diet (0, 10, 50, or 200 CdCl2 mg/kg diet) for 13 weeks. Cd and essential metals stored in the liver were measured by ICP-MS multianalysis. Mineral content of the livers was modified according to Cd level: iron, magnesi

UK dietary exposure to BSE in beef mechanically recovered meat: by birth cohort and gender.

BACKGROUND: Meat recovered mechanically from bovine vertebral columns for use in burgers, sausages and other meat products may have been contaminated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) from recovered spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia (DRG). We quantified UK exposure to BSE in beef mechanically recovered meat (MRM) by birth cohort (born pre-1940, in 1940-1969, post-1969), gender and calendar period (1980-1989, 1990-1996) because information on any two of BSE exposure intensity, vCJD incubation period and the new cases of vCJD tells us about the third. METHODS: Synthesis of evidence

Environmental chemicals in dogs: evidence review and new data linking dietary exposure and reproductive performance.

The domestic dog is proposed as a sentinel species for the adverse reproductive effects of environmental chemicals (ECs), sharing the human environment and some components of dietary exposure, whilst exhibiting similar reproductive changes as humans. Here we present a narrative review of published information incorporating new data that potentially link EC exposure to changes in reproductive function in the dog. We compare these findings with similar trends in humans and other species. Our conclusions include; (1) within a single UK assistance-dog breeding population, a decline in sperm motili

Short-term dietary deoxynivalenol exposure negatively affects performance, intestinal and reproductive functions in laying hens.

The detrimental effects of deoxynivalenol (DON) on broiler chickens are well documented; however, studies on laying hens fed diets naturally contaminated with this mycotoxin remain limited. To evaluate the impact of short-term DON exposure, 600 56-week-old Dekalb White laying hens were fed either a marginally contaminated control diet (CON) or a diet containing 2.45 mg/kg DON for 16 weeks. Production performance was impaired by DON as early as 8 weeks of exposure. Although no changes were observed in the physical characteristics of the eggshells, mRNA expression analyses revealed disruptions i

Exposure to Dietary Nitrite Exacerbates Lupus in MRL/lpr Mice by Enhancing Integrin Alpha M.

There is a recognized longitudinal association between serum nitrogen oxides levels and disease activity in lupus nephritis. Recently, increased exposure to high levels of nitrite has raised significant concerns, though its impact on lupus pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Using the MRL/lpr spontaneous lupus model, we employed integrated immunological and transcriptomic approaches to investigate nitrite's effects. Flow cytometry revealed significant elevations in splenic double negative T (DN T) cells, T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, and plasma cells following nitrite intervention,

Trophic transfer and dietary exposure risk of mercury in aquatic organisms from urbanized coastal ecosystems.

In this study, 26 surface seawater samples, 26 surface sediment samples and 114 organisms were collected to study the trophic transfer and dietary exposure risk of mercury (Hg) in organisms from the Jiaozhou Bay, which is a typical semi-enclosed urbanized bay. The total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations did not exceed the threshold limits and performed as: fish > crustaceans > mollusks. The trophic level values (TLs) were less than 3 in all the groups, indicating simple structure of food chain. With the increasing δ15N value, THg and MeHg were significantly biomagnified in

Microbiota of Four Tissue Types in American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) Following Extended Dietary Selenomethionine Exposure.

Selenium represents an essential trace nutrient that is necessary for biological functions. Deficiencies can induce disease, but excess can induce toxicity. Selenium deficiency is a major concern in underdeveloped countries, while also posing as a toxic pollutant in waterways surrounding landfills, agricultural areas, and fossil fuel production sites. We examined the microbiome of selenomethionine (SeMet) fed American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) at the beginning and end of a 7-week exposure experiment. Alligators were randomly divided into three groups: control and 1000 or 2000 ppm

Comparative toxicity of nanoparticulate and ionic copper following dietary exposure to common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Copper is an essential element for the normal growth and survival of all organisms including fish. However, its excessive presence in the environment can cause bioaccumulation and aquatic toxicology. The aim of the present study was to compare the dietary toxicity effects of two different Cu compounds, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) and ionic copper (CuSO4) in juvenile common carp, Cyprinus carpio. To prepare experimental diets, two nominal concentrations of 100 and 1000 mg Cu kg-1 diet were added to a basal diet. Carp (n = 450, average initial weight of 35.94 ± 5.35 g) were fed on the C
