An Evaluation of Metabolic, Dietetic, and Nutritional Status Reveals Impaired Nutritional Outcomes in Breast Cancer Patients.

Nutritional status can change in breast cancer patients after treatment. However, the metabolic implications of those alterations are poorly understood. We used a cross-sectional study design to compare body composition, lipids, glucose levels, and adiposity indices in breast cancer patients with a matched control and a healthy group. We recruited women who completed their chemotherapy (BC group) and compared them with a group of women without cancer age and body mass index-paired (MC group) and a group of healthy women (HC group). We estimated body composition by bioelectrical impedance analy

Patient Perspectives of Living with Coeliac Disease and Accessing Dietetic Services in Rural Australia: A Qualitative Study.

Adapting to living with coeliac disease requires individuals to learn about and follow a strict gluten-free diet. Utilising a qualitative inductive approach, this study aimed to explore the perspectives of adults diagnosed with coeliac disease who have accessed dietetic services in a rural outpatient setting. A purposive sample of adults with coeliac disease who had accessed dietetic services from two rural dietetic outpatient clinics were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were conducted by telephone. Data were thematically analysed. Six participants were recruited and interviewed. Three k

Potassium reduction in food by preparation technique for the dietetic management of patients with chronic kidney disease: a review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease patients often use food preparation techniques to reduce potassium intake. However, the most effective techniques have not yet been determined for all food groups. The present study aimed to analyse all of the available information on potassium reduction in the food and identify the best preparation techniques by comparing the trend of change in potassium level. METHODS: Nine databases were searched from 1976 to May 2020, according to the PRISMA Statement. We included all articles reporting the amount of potassium before and after the application of food pre

Born at 27 weeks of gestation with classical PKU: challenges of dietetic management in a very preterm infant.

Few cases of premature infants with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) have been reported. Treatment of these patients is challenging due to the lack of a phenylalanine (Phe)-free amino acid (AA) solution for parenteral nutrition. A boy born at 27 weeks of gestation with a weight of 1000 g was diagnosed with classical PKU on day 7 because of highly elevated Phe level at newborn screening (2800 µmol/L). Phe intake was suspended for 5 days and during this time intravenous glucose and lipids as well as small amounts of Phe-free formula through nasogastric tube were given. Because of insufficient wei

Position of the American Dietetic Association: individual-, family-, school-, and community-based interventions for pediatric overweight.

The American Dietetic Association (ADA), recognizing that overweight is a significant problem for children and adolescents in the United States, takes the position that pediatric overweight intervention requires a combination of family-based and school-based multi-component programs that include the promotion of physical activity, parent training/modeling, behavioral counseling, and nutrition education. Furthermore, although not yet evidence-based, community-based and environmental interventions are recommended as among the most feasible ways to support healthful lifestyles for the greatest nu

[Maple syrup disease: a rare entity that we must know. Review of its dietetic management].

Maple syrup disease is secondary to a deficiency of deshydrogenase complex of a cetoacid of branched-chain. This disease has a recessive autosomic inheritance, with an incidence of 1/200,000 newborns, without differences between male and female. Due to clinical presentation and biochemical response to tiamin, these patients can be classified in five clinical entities: classic, intermediate, intermittent, positive response to tiamin and deficiency of dihydrolipoyl deshydrogenase (E3). In these patients, an increase of seric branched-chain aminoacids is detected, it could be detected by (chromat

[Dietetic therapy of obesity. Preliminary considerations on the combined therapy with ursodeoxycholic acid in the prevention of cholesterol lithiasis].

The use of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) was found useful in reducing the incidence of cholelithiasis (p < 0.05) without provoking any other alteration in hepatic function. This preliminary experience underlines the appropriateness of carrying out further studies on the utility of preventive treatment for the formation of cholesterol calculi with biliary acids, and in particular UDCA, in obese subjects who are receiving dietary treatment. The protective action of ursodeoxycholic acid in the prevention of biliary lithiasis during the course of low-calorie diets was evaluated in 40 obese subjects

[Nutritional investigations and dietetic note-book. An instrument to establish the diet of hyperlipidemic patients (author's transl)].

Whenever an excess of blood lipoids is revealed by laboratory tests, investigations should be conducted along two lines: etiological, aimed at detecting an underlying disease amenable to treatment, and dietetic, aimed at determining the patient's calorie intake. In every case, dietetic measures should begin with a normal-lipid, alcohol-free diet providing a number of calories adapted to the patient's weight. Calorie restriction is achieved at the expense of carbohydrates. This adaptation phase usually lasts 2 months. It is made easier by dietetic note-books where the amounts of each food are e

Application of the 2011 international consensus cancer cachexia classification in routine oncology dietetic practice: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia (CC) is highly prevalent and associated with significant morbidity and mortality, yet underrecognized. In 2011, an international cachexia consensus (ICC) proposed a definition, assessment framework, and stages for classification: cancer precachexia, cachexia, and refractory cachexia. The authors anticipated that a "more practical classification approach for clinical practice" would be required, which we interpreted as a bedside assessment based on clinical data. We investigated whether the ICC classification could be employed in routine dietetic practice without acc

Effectiveness of two methods of advising mothers on infant feeding and dietetic management of diarrhoea at an outpatient clinic in Peru.

The effectiveness of two educational intervention programmes in promoting infant feeding practices was assessed among mothers of small children attending a hospital's Oral Rehydration Unit in Peru. One group of mothers received 5 min of counselling and a recipe pamphlet. The other group received the same counselling plus a 20-min cooking demonstration. Both interventions had a statistically significant (p < 0.05) impact on maternal knowledge and practices; differences between the impact of the two practices were negligible. After merging both groups into a single sample, it was observed that c
