Diffusion-weighted perinatal postmortem magnetic resonance imaging as a marker of postmortem interval.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate perinatal body organ apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values at postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMR) in order to evaluate postmortem changes. METHODS: Postmortem diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the thorax and abdomen were performed with diffusion gradient values b = 0, 500, and 1000 s/mm(2) on 15 foetal and childhood cases (mean 33.3 ± 7.8 weeks gestation) compared to 44 live infants (mean age 75.5 ± 53.4 days). Mean ADC values were calculated from regions of interest (ROIs) for the lungs, liver, spleen and renal cortex, compared to normative live infant

Correlation of magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging and clinical findings of cervical myelopathy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Despite significant advances in the development of diagnostic technology, the diagnosis of cervical myelopathy (CM) still remains based on the clinical findings, which do not provide the means for a sufficiently accurate diagnosis. Furthermore, conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using T1- and T2-weighted sequences lacks sensitivity to detect and characterize spinal cord lesions. Considering these uncertainties, several investigators have assessed the diagnostic value of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), an advanced MRI technique that measures the diffusion of water

Impact of poststroke seizures on neurological deficits: magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of poststroke seizures on the neurological deficits related to ischemic stroke is not well known. It has been reported that following poststroke epilepsy, transient or long-lasting worsening of the poststroke sequelae may develop, but the underlying mechanism of deficit worsening has not been systematically studied by magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (MRI-DWI). METHODS: From 2008 to 2009, 1,010 ischemic stroke patients were admitted to our stroke unit at the Ege University Hospital with first-time strokes. Of these, 76 (7.5%) patients developed delayed seiz

[Ovarian metastases from ventricular cancer diagnosed using diffusion-weighted 3T magnetic resonance imaging].

A 58-year-old female with a non-resectable ventricular cancer was followed by conventional 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pelvis and abdomen including diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI). B-values were 0 and 1,000 seconds/mm2, and the apparent diffusion coefficient was calculated. At one control, ovarian metastases were detected by DWI, but did not show on conventional T2 and T1. The ovarian metastases were surgically removed and histologically verified - even though metastasectomy is controversial. In conclusion, DWI at 3.0 T is feasible and can improve the detection of metasta

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging for enhanced visualization of malignant cerebral tumors and abscesses.

BACKGROUND: Several malignant tumors and brain abscesses have similar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. Because the prognosis and treatment strategies differ among these disorders, accurate preoperative diagnosis is very significant. Recently, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and calculation of apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) have been reported to be useful to differentiate between the two disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI and DWI were performed in 37 patients: 13 with glioblastomas, 14 with metastatic tumors, 7 with malignant lymphomas, and 3 with brain abscesses. The min

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of breast lesions: first experiences at 3 T.

PURPOSE: Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as a valuable tool for the detection of breast cancer. There is evidence suggesting that diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) may be useful to distinguish between malignant and benign breast lesions. We seek to evaluate the ability of DWI to differentiate between malignant and benign breast lesions at 3 T. METHODS: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and DWI of the breasts were performed in 31 female patients (age: mean, 46 years; range, 34-69 years) with suspected breast lesions on mammography and ultrasound using

Reduced fractional anisotropy on diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging after hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) that are measured by diffusion-weighted imaging are reduced in severe white matter (WM) and in some severe basal ganglia and thalamic (BGT) injury in infants who present with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). However, ADC values may pseudonormalize or even be high during this time in some less severe but clinically significant injuries. We hypothesized that fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure of the directional diffusivity of water made using diffusion tensor imaging, may be abnormal in these less severe injuries; therefore, the objective

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion-weighted imaging in isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency.

Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of the newborn that can be mistaken for neonatal asphyxia. Diffusion-weighted imaging of the brain demonstrates widespread diffusion restriction, and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy shows an elevated lactate level, a decrease in the ratio of N-acetylaspartate to creatine, and a rise in the ratio of choline to creatine. This precedes severe cystic encephalomalacia and suggests that the energy failure associated with neuronal dysfunction and myelin disintegration occurs early in isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency.

Detection of wallerian degeneration in a newborn by diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

We present the case of an infant with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in whom wallerian degeneration is demonstrated in white-matter fiber tracts by diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI was undertaken on days 2 and 9 and then at 9 months of age. On day 2, conventional MRI was normal, but diffusion MRI showed bioccipital abnormalities. On day 9, diffusion MRI showed marked abnormalities in the deep white matter of the occipital regions (left > right), corpus callosum, left posterior limb of the internal capsule, and left cerebral peduncle. Water apparent diffusion coefficient values

[Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings at early stage of acute Wernicke encephalopathy].

We describe a patient with acute Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) in whom diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) were helpful for early diagnosis. A 66-year-old alcoholic man was admitted to our department because of recurrent mild drowsiness. Thiamine concentrations in blood were at the lower limit of normal. DWI demonstrated an abnormal signal intensity in the dorsal part of the midbrain, and high-dose thiamine therapy was started. These lesions disappeared on DWI after one month of follow-up, in association with clinical improvement. These findings suggest that DWI is useful for de

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging of microstructural abnormalities in children with brain injury.

We present two pediatric cases demonstrating that diffusion tensor imaging is more efficient at revealing microstructural abnormalities of the brain than conventional magnetic resonance imaging because it enables measurements of the directionality and integrity of white matter fiber tracts. One patient suffered from left hemiparesis, and the other had right hemiparesis. However, whereas conventional magnetic resonance imaging showed only the findings of traumatic contusional hemorrhages in the left temporal and parietal lobes of the first patient and focal encephalomalacia in the left anterior

Integrated assessment of diabetic nephropathy by multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging with non-enhanced T1 mapping, diffusion tensor imaging, and diffusion kurtosis imaging.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the diagnostic utility of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) for early diabetic kidney disease (DKD). We aimed to assess renal impairment by combining parameters from non-enhanced T1 mapping, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). METHODS: We prospectively recruited 63 patients with type 2 diabetes, who were divided into three groups based on urine albumin-creatinine ratio: Group 0 (simple diabetes, n = 11), Group 1 (early DKD, n = 20), and Group 2 (advanced DKD, n = 32). All patients underwent renal mp-MRI.

Cerebral Autoregulation and Conventional and Diffusion Tensor Imaging Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Deviation of mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) from the range that optimizes cerebral autoregulatory vasoreactivity (optimal MAP) could increase neurological injury from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We tested whether a global magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain injury score and regional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) are associated with optimal MAP in neonates with HIE. METHODS: Twenty-five neonates cooled for HIE were monitored with the hemoglobin volume index. In this observational study, we identified optimal MAP and measured brain injury by qualitative and quanti
