The Hidden Everyday-Life Burden of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: A Household Implementation Framework for Modern Diabetes Technology and Family Care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Frameworks that classify the financial burdens of managing pediatric type 1 diabetes (T1D) primarily focus on measurable material hardship, affordability, and cost-related distress and therefore do not sufficiently detail the household-level resources that care requires from families. This study is a conceptual narrative review that aims to integrate the missing elements into a new three-level burden model, thereby linking the costs visible in clinical care, the household implementation burden borne by families, and the lived everyday experience of the child-parent-family tr

Can Telehealth Improve Access to Amyloid-Targeting Therapies for Veterans Living With Alzheimer Disease?

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-targeting therapies, such as lecanemab and donanemab, offer new hope for managing Alzheimer disease (AD). Provision of these medications, however, is challenging for patients, care partners, and clinicians. OBSERVATIONS: Telehealth has demonstrated success in the assessment and management of individuals living with dementia in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). It may substantially increase access to evaluation for veterans with early dementia and, when medically appropriate, amyloid-targeting therapies. Telehealth has the potential to overcome barriers related to t

Living during COVID-19: qualitative analysis of Experts by Experience UK University Associates' socioeconomic inequalities, including readiness recommendations.

A vulnerable group of people with disabilities and carers (Experts by Experience) wished for research during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist other people with disabilities in the future. Consideration of this vulnerable group seems to be limited in future policy pandemic readiness despite huge potential mortality. Literature reviewed critical public health theory through assessing health inequalities and health equity in relation to disability/chronic ill health. A standard qualitative thematic method distinguished socioeconomic health inequalities for people with earlier mental/psychosocial d

Navigating program evaluation amid health crises: Evaluator's experiences on conducting virtual focus group discussions.

Virtual Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) have become vital tools in program evaluations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where they provide an adaptable alternative to traditional face-to-face methods. These virtual platforms, such as Google Meet, allow evaluators to engage diverse stakeholders and collect valuable insights despite geographical limitations. However, despite their increasing use, there remains a significant gap in understanding how evaluators in South Africa perceive and implement virtual methodologies in the context of program evaluations. This study aims to address thi

Conjoint analysis of social inequality indicators in diet and physical activity app (non-)users: Representative online surveys in Austria, Germany and Italy.

BACKGROUND: Mobile interventions for health promotion (mHealth) are promising behaviour change tools. Yet they are infrequently used, and research suggests that use may be unevenly distributed in the population, potentially widening existing health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: This study tested for individual and joint associations between socio-demographic characteristics and nutrition and physical activity app use. METHODOLOGY: Nationally representative samples for Austria, Germany and Italy were recruited with N = 1974 participants in total. In an online survey, participants reported on nutri

From gestalt to gene: early predictive dysmorphic features of PMM2-CDG.

INTRODUCTION: Phosphomannomutase-2 deficiency (PMM2-CDG) is associated with a recognisable facial pattern. There are no early severity predictors for this disorder and no phenotype-genotype correlation. We performed a detailed dysmorphology evaluation to describe facial gestalt and its changes over time, to train digital recognition facial analysis tools and to identify early severity predictors. METHODS: Paediatric PMM2-CDG patients were evaluated and compared with controls. A computer-assisted recognition tool was trained. Through the evaluation of dysmorphic features (DFs), a simple catego

Insights on Postimplementation and Delivery of Telemedicine in Remote Areas of Rajasthan: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine has emerged as a critical strategy to address health care access gaps in hard-to-reach areas, particularly in resource-constrained settings. While telemedicine services have expanded across India, evidence on post-implementation experiences, specifically regarding the integration of portable diagnostic tools, and the assisting role of frontline health care workers, remains limited. Understanding these sociotechnical dynamics is essential for optimizing digital health interventions in remote areas. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore perceptions, experiences, and im

Ethical by Design: Engaging the Community to Co-design a Digital Health Ecosystem to Improve Overdose Prevention Efforts Among Highly Vulnerable People Who Use Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant structural barriers that exacerbated health inequities among people at-risk for overdose. Digital health technologies have the potential to overcome some of these barriers; however, development of these technologies often fails to include people who use drugs and community key stakeholders in the development and dissemination process. Consequently, this may exacerbate health inequities and the digital divide among underserved, highly vulnerable people who use drugs. METHODS: The current study employed community-engaged research metho

Use of superficial palmar arch for bridging the gap in digital revascularisation.

Traumatic hand injuries resulting in segmental loss of common digital artery are not uncommon. To bridge the gap and repair of transected common digital artery, the superficial palmar arch could be divided proximally on radial side and turned distally to the common digital artery for revascularisation. Revascularisation of the transversely crushed common digital artery can be performed based solely on superficial palmar arch for revascularisation of the segmental loss of common digital artery. However, because of known variability in the palmar arch, intraoperative verification is needed to en

Promoting healthy aging through intergenerational exchange and digital empowerment: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are major public health concern among individuals aged 65 and older, as they are associated with increased risks of morbidity and mortality. Intergenerational programs have emerged as promising interventions to mitigate these issues by fostering social participation and enhancing overall well-being. Interventions that also incorporate digital literacy support may further help address the relevant digital divide, which significantly contributes to social exclusion, particularly among older adults. This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility and p

Let's Code! How Can Programming Logic Make a Vascular Neurologist Even Better?

BACKGROUND: As digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) become integral to medicine, there is a growing need for physicians to develop computational thinking skills. In vascular neurology, a specialty reliant on algorithmic decision-making and complex data interpretation, programming logic (PL) offers a powerful cognitive framework. This review argues that PL can enhance diagnostic precision, clinical efficiency, and data-driven reasoning. By aligning core programming structures - such as conditional statements, loops, and data abstraction - with clinical workflows, neurologists can imp

Telehealth Use and Modality Choice Among US Adults: Shorrocks-Shapley Decomposition of a 2022 Cross-Sectional National Survey.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth use surged during the COVID-19 pandemic and has stabilized at levels substantially above prepandemic baselines. However, concerns persist that the digital divide may reproduce or widen disparities in access. Understanding the determinants of telehealth use-and particularly modality choice between video and audio-is essential for designing policies that promote equitable access in the post-public health emergency era. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify determinants of telehealth use and modality among US adults in 2022 and quantify the relative contributions of digit

The cutaneous mucinoses are a heterogeneous group of diseases in which mucin accumulates in the skin or within the hair follicle. We divide the cutaneous mucinoses into two groups: the distinctive cutaneous mucinoses in which the mucin deposit is a distinctive histopathologic feature that manifests as a clinically specific lesion, and the diseases associated with histopathologic mucin deposition as an additional finding. This article deals with the clinical and histopathologic features and the treatment of the distinctive cutaneous mucinoses and updates their classification. They may be divide
