Effects of guanidinoacetic acid and live yeast cells on cattle rumen fermentation and greenhouse biogas production in vitro of ten shrub species.

Enteric gas production during rumen fermentation, enteric methane (CH4), contributes to approximately 14-18% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a reduction of 2% to 15% in consumed energy. Therefore, reducing enteric CH4 production may have environmental (CH4 is a potent greenhouse gas), nutritional (decreased energy losses), and economic benefits (enhanced animal productivity). The trial aimed to evaluate the effects of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) and live yeast cells (YEA) on methane, carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, and on ruminal fermentation characteri

Persimmon leaf extract ameliorates hyperlipidemia by modulating lipid genes expression and gut microbiota in high-fat-diet-fed mice.

BACKGROUND: Hyperlipidemia is characterized by abnormally elevated blood lipids. Persimmon leaf has multiple pharmacological activities and is valued for its lipid-lowering effect. However, few reports have revealed the hypolipidemic mechanism of persimmon leaf. In this study, compositions from the ethanol extract of persimmon leaf (PLE) were identified by high-resolution liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography. The mechanism of PLE against hyperlipidemia induced by high-fat diet in mice was then explored based on lipid

A Mixture of Ethanol Extracts of Persimmon Leaf and Citrus junos Sieb Improves Blood Coagulation Parameters and Ameliorates Lipid Metabolism Disturbances Caused by Diet-Induced Obesity in C57BL/6J Mice.

This study investigated the effects of a flavonoid-rich ethanol extract of persimmon leaf (PL), an ethanol extract of Citrus junos Sieb (CJS), and a PL-CJS mixture (MPC) on mice fed a highfat diet (HFD). We sought to elucidate the mechanisms of biological activity of these substances using measurements of blood coagulation indices and lipid metabolism parameters. C57BL/6J mice were fed a HFD with PL (0.5% (w/w)), CJS (0.1% (w/w)), or MPC (PL 0.5%, CJS 0.1% (w/w)) for 10 weeks. In comparison with data obtained for mice in the untreated HFD group, consumption of MPC remarkably prolonged the acti

Hypoglycemic effects of aqueous persimmon leaf extract in a murine model of diabetes.

Previously, powdered persimmon leaves have been reported to have glucose- and lipid-lowering effects in diabetic (db/db) mice. As persimmon leaf is commonly consumed as tea, an aqueous extract of persimmon leaves (PLE) was prepared and its anti-diabetic efficacy was investigated. In the present study, PLE was tested for its inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase in vitro. An oral maltose tolerance test was performed in diabetic mice. Next, the acute effect of PLE was examined in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. Last, the long-term effect of PLE supplementation was assessed in db/db after ei

Ethanol Extract of Persimmon Tree Leaves Improves Blood Circulation and Lipid Metabolism in Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet.

The leaves of the persimmon tree (PL) are known to have beneficial effects on hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We recently demonstrated that PL had antithrombotic properties in vitro. However, little is known about the antiplatelet and anticoagulant properties of PL in vivo. Omega-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA)-containing fish oil has been widely prescribed to improve blood circulation. This study compared the effects of dietary supplementation with an ethanol extract of PL or n-3 FA on blood coagulation, platelet activation, and lipid levels in vivo. Sprague-Dawley ra

Astragalin inhibits airway eotaxin-1 induction and epithelial apoptosis through modulating oxidative stress-responsive MAPK signaling.

BACKGROUND: Eotaxin proteins are a potential therapeutic target in treating the peribronchial eosinophilia associated with allergic airway diseases. Since inflammation is often associated with an increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress is a mechanistically imperative factor in asthma. Astragalin (kaempferol-3-O-glucoside) is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory activity and newly found in persimmon leaves and green tea seeds. This study elucidated that astragalin inhibited endotoxin-induced oxidative stress leading to eosinophilia and epithelial apoptosis in airwa
