BACKGROUND: Human dirofilariasis is an emerging zoonosis in many countries. Dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens may present with diverse clinical manifestations in humans due to aberrant localization of worm lesions causing diagnostic dilemmas. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe and update the demography and clinical spectrum of human dirofilariasis in western Sri Lanka. Nematode or nematode fragments isolated from excision biopsies that were confirmed as D. repens at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, between 2012 a

This report describes a rare case of ophthalmic dirofilariasis in a 68-year-old woman with red and foreign body sensation in the pterygium on her right eye. Slit lamp examination demonstrated a long-slender worm moving in her pterygium. The worm was removed surgically and then identified as Diroflaria repens by sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) gene. The situation of dirofilariasis in Vietnam has been reviewed. Since the first described case in 2010 there have been thirteen cases reported that suggested the emerging trend of the disease. Most of the documented cases of

Dirofilariasis refers to an infection caused by a specific parasitic roundworm. Dirofilaria repens - transmitted by mosquito bites - accounts for most human cases. The parasite forms a subcutaneous mass called cutaneous dirofilariasis near the original site of intrusion. The incidence of human infections shows an increasing tendency. We report a case of a 35-year-old woman presenting with three-week history of a painful swelling in the temporal region. The initial diagnostic work-up revealed a roundworm embedded in the subcutaneous fat tissue and temporal muscle. Differential diagnosis include

The article presents the results of studies of the clinical diagnostic laboratory of the E.I. Martcinovskii institute of medical parasitology, tropical and transmissive diseases related to diagnostic of human dirofilariasis brought in by Dirofilaria repens. During last 15 years, 165 cases were diagnosed. The most of dirofilaria (89.7%) migrated and localized superficially under skin or mucous membrane: on the head in 88 cases and out of them 43.6% in the area of eye-socket, in 25 cases on the body out of them 4 on genitalia, in 35 cases under skin of extremities. In 1 cases dirofilaria migrate

Cases of human dirofilariasis have been reported in several countries around the world, including a large number in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast regions of the United States. Most commonly, these cases have subcutaneous or pulmonary involvement; however, there have been few reports of dirofilariasis involving structures such as large vessels, mesentery, the spermatic cord, and liver. We present a case of an unusual presentation of human dirofilariasis presenting as a shoulder abscess and what is presumed to be pulmonary and splenic involvement in a 55-year-old female.

A 7 yr old female spayed Yorkshire terrier was referred to the author's institute for a 5 mo history of recurrent cervical spinal pain. Neurologic examination did not reveal any deficits. Hematologic and serum analyses were within normal limits. Thoracic radiographs that incorporated the cervical spine did not show structural abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine demonstrated a contrast enhancing, intradural extramedullary lesion at the level of the C2 vertebra. Hemilaminectomy was performed, during which a long, narrow nematode was visualized upon opening of the dura

This paper describes a case of dirofilariasis in a two-year old, female grey wolf (Canis lupus lupus). The autopsy revealed the presence of 42 adult forms of Dirofilaria immitis in the pulmonary artery, right ventricle and right atrium, varying in length from 9.5 to 30 cm. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the second report of D. immitis in grey wolves in Serbia. Our finding confirms that the wolf, as a subspecies distinct from the dog, should also be considered as a very suitable definitive host for dirofilariasis.

PURPOSE: Dirofilaria repens is an endemic parasite in Mediterranean countries that mostly affects animals. Rarely, however, it can infect humans. This case series presents patients with ocular infections due to D. repens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review was performed of patients with ocular dirofilariasis after the year 2000, treated at a tertiary referral centre in Greece. Data were collected on the ocular, microbiological, or/and histopathological aspects and treatment.
RESULTS: Eight cases of unilateral ocular dirofilariasis were identified, of which 5 were subconjunctival (1 masque

Coin lesions in the human lung present significant differential diagnostic problems to the physician. There are at least 20 known causes of such lesions, including neoplastic lesions, infectious diseases, and granulomas. The human medical literature contains many misconceptions about the life cycle of Dirofilaria immitis, including the method of entry of the infective-stage larvae and the development of the young adult worm. These misconceptions have obscured the recognition of the clinical presentation of pulmonary dirofilariasis and the potential for D. immitis to lodge in many other areas o

Due to the availability of factors whose reasons have not been studied so far for this area. Volgograd and Volgograd Region should be recognized to be a dirofilariasis-endemic zone. The lack of an actual system of prevention, as well as other objective and subjective factors are responsible for constantly increasing numbers of ill human beings and animals. The disease awaits further thorough studies to reveal the causes of this disease in the area; to elaborate a package of preventive measures, and to improve methods of diagnosis, surgical and medical treatments.

Two new human cases of dirofilariasis, both due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, recently occurring in Nuoro province (Sardinia) on people permanently resident in the island, are described. The parasite was located in one case into the uterine round ligament, in the other it was subconjunctival. Some observations about the diagnostic difficulties in the first one and the dramatic symptoms in the second, whose parasite was yet alive during the surgical ablaction, are discussed. These cases are the 9th and the 10th, respectively, reported in man in Sardinia, but it is possible that other case

Human dirofilariasis is a helminthic zoonosis that is common in some parts of the world. A sporadic case of dirofilariasis affecting the buccal mucosa has been reported in a non-endemic area of southern China. Clinical findings, diagnosis, pathogenesis and management are discussed. This is the fourth case of human dirofilariasis involving the oral mucosa reported in world literature.

Cutaneous nodular dirofilariasis is occasionally reported in dogs but is rare in cats. This report describes two cases of cutaneous nodular lesions due to Dirofilaria immitis adult parasites in domestic shorthaired cats living in an endemic area in northern Italy.

A 61-year-old man visited a community hospital because of hemosputum. A solitary nodule in the left lower lung field was pointed out on a chest roentgenogram. The patient was treated with antibiotics, but the solitary nodule increased in size. He was referred to our hospital because of high fever and observations of cavity formation and pleural effusion on a chest roentgenogram. The pleural effusion showed no cytologic evidence of malignancy, and cultures were also negative for bacteria. An increased percentage of lymphocytes was detected in the pleural effusion, but slight eosinophilia was fo

Dirofilariasis is characterized by the presence of numerous filarial worms in the subcutaneous tissues, and by the formation of subcutaneous nodules. The clinical symptoms and histologic features of the disease are discussed, together with a case report from Greece.

Human dirofilariasis by nematode worm Dirofilaria repens is an uncommon zoonotic infection presenting most commonly as subcutaneous nodules after mosquito bites. Although the subcutaneous nodules can occur anywhere in the body, orbital and periorbital locations are most commonly involved. Imaging makes the cornerstone of diagnosis in cases with strong clinical suspicion since the nodular subcutaneous swelling has many clinical differentials. We present a case of an 11-year-old boy with infraorbital swelling, which was diagnosed to be dirofilariasis on imaging and postoperative histopathology.
