Teaching reading to disabled readers with language disorders: a controlled evaluation of synthetic speech feedback.

In a long-term study two groups of language and reading impaired students (N = 15 + 15) were reading with the aid of segmented speech-feedback in a computerized program. One group received feedback that was simultaneously segmented visually and auditorily into syllables, the other received feedback by letter names. In both groups subjects were expected to synthesize segments into words and to compare their synthesis to whole word feed-back subsequently provided by the computer. They worked for half a lesson (approximately 20 minutes) a day for a total of 40 days. During this period the experim

Conceptual foundation for measures of physical function and behavioral health function for Social Security work disability evaluation.

Physical and mental impairments represent the 2 largest health condition categories for which workers receive Social Security disability benefits. Comprehensive assessment of physical and mental impairments should include aspects beyond medical conditions such as a person's underlying capabilities as well as activity demands relevant to the context of work. The objective of this article is to describe the initial conceptual stages of developing new measurement instruments of behavioral health and physical functioning relevant for Social Security work disability evaluation purposes. To outline

[Forensic evaluation of physical damage in the early Middle Ages--a comparison with current occupational disability guidelines].

The legal systems of the Germanic tribes in the early Middle Ages elaborated detailed catalogs of forfeits in compensation for certain physical injuries. The perpetrator had to pay the forfeit to the injured person, or in case of manslaughter, to the tribe of the dead. By doing so he could avert the feud which otherwise faced him. These catalogs of forfeits exactly reflect the relative value that was appointed to certain parts of the body and to sensory functions. The catalog of the Lex Saxonum (c. 802), in which physical injuries are listed, ranging from loss of single phalanges, differentiat

Crowd Evaluations of Entrepreneurs with Physical Disabilities: Stereotype Subtyping through the Lens of Benevolent Ableism.

We investigate how crowds evaluate pitches by entrepreneurs with versus without physical disabilities. Leveraging stereotype subtyping, we argue that entrepreneurs with physical disabilities are evaluated as a distinct subtype, rather than as people with disabilities or as conventional entrepreneurs. We hypothesize that benevolent ableism shapes how this subtype is evaluated, inflating both warmth and competence perceptions. Three experiments support our hypotheses, and key informant conversations with professional investors and entrepreneurs with disabilities corroborate the proposed mechanis

Medical certification in sickness benefit scheme (II): practical approaches for evaluating work disability.

Work disability evaluation plays a central role in medical certification in sickness benefit schemes. This guides effective decision making for return-to-work timelines. Countries that incorporate it have varied approaches. To improve fairness and consistency, Sweden adopted disease-specific guidelines, particularly for complex health conditions such as mental disorders, cancer, and neurological diseases, whereas in the United Kingdom, a fit note system highlights the ease of fitness-for-work assessments in clinical settings. For a successful implementation of the sickness benefit scheme in Ko
