Disgust and imaginal exposure to memories of sexual trauma: Implications for the treatment of posttraumatic stress.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging evidence identifies disgust as a common and persistent reaction following sexual victimization that is linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Importantly, evidence suggests that compared with fear, disgust may be less responsive to repeated exposure, which may have implications for the treatment of PTSD. The current study sought to fill a gap in the existing literature by examining reductions in sexual trauma cue-elicited disgust and anxiety upon repeated imaginal exposure. METHOD: Seventy-two women with a history of sexual victimization completed a single laborat

Altered explicit recognition of facial disgust associated with predisposition to suicidal behavior but not depression.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal acts result from a complex interplay between vulnerability factors, such as reduced social and cognitive abilities, social stressors. To our knowledge nothing is known about the explicit recognition of others' facial emotions, a major component of social interactions, in patients at long-term risk for suicide. METHODS: Thirty-five non-depressed patients with a history of a serious suicide attempt and mood disorders were compared with 31 patients with a history of mood disorders but no personal history of suicidal acts, and with 37 healthy controls with no personal history

Beyond fear and disgust: the role of (automatic) contamination-related associations in spider phobia.

This study explored the role of threat and contamination-related associations in spider phobia. Treatment-seeking (n=60) and non-phobic (n=30) individuals completed threat and disgust-related Implicit Association Tests (IATs). Phobic individuals were assessed before and after one session of 2.5h in vivo exposure. To differentiate actual treatment effects from test-retest effects on the IAT, half of the phobic individuals completed the IAT twice before treatment. Results showed that: (1) threat and contamination associations similarly distinguished between phobic and non-phobic participants on

Evaluative differential conditioning of disgust: a sticky form of relational learning that is resistant to extinction.

The present study sought to (a) test whether autonomic (i.e., electrodermal) and evaluative conditioning can be differentially established to verbal CSs, and (b) whether extinction procedures can reliably attenuate differential conditioned evaluative responding. Thirty undergraduates underwent a 10-min adaptation period followed by three consecutive conditioning phases: habituation, acquisition, and extinction. Conditioning involved participants viewing two semi-randomly presented words on a computer monitor. During acquisition, one word (CS+) was reliably paired 12 times with the UCS (pictori

Neurocircuitry of disgust and anxiety in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a positron emission tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Disgust and fear are basic emotions that have different elicitors and expressions, and that appear to be mediated by different neurocircuits. Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is classified as an anxiety disorder, disgust may be involved in its pathogenesis. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of disgust-inducing visual stimuli in OCD have suggested disorder specific alterations in brain activation during these tasks. METHODS: Subjects with OCD and healthy controls (HC) underwent positron emission tomography (PET) brain scanning after injection of H(2)

The relationship between disgust sensitivity and avoidant behavior: studies of clinical and nonclinical samples.

Researchers have reported links between specific phobias (of small animals and blood/ injection/injury (BII)) and disgust sensitivity. Avoidance is one route by which disgust sensitivity may play a role in the etiology or maintenance of pathological fear. This paper discusses a series of three studies to examine behavior associated with disgust sensitivity. Study I examined disgust sensitivity and avoidance of disgust-evoking tasks among spider fearful and nonfearful participants. Study 2 reanalyzed previously published data on the relationship between disgust sensitivity and visual avoidance

Individual susceptibility to disgust modulates neural and systemic immune responses to virtual infections.

Disgust is a key psychological mechanism for avoiding pathogen exposure and constitutes a central component of the behavioral immune system. While disgust is thought to reduce infection risk through avoidance, it remains unclear how individual differences in disgust sensitivity shape downstream neuroimmune responses to perceived pathogen threats. Here, we show that lower disgust sensitivity is associated with stronger activation of type 1 innate lymphoid cells during exposure to infectious, compared with neutral, avatars in virtual reality. Disgust sensitivity further correlated with circulati

'They're eating our pets!': When disgust and perceived cruelty combine to heighten prejudice.

Accusations that foreigners are 'eating pets' tap into deep fears of impurity and cruelty. Despite the dark history of such moralized disgust and evidence that purity- and harm-based emotions can intensify bias, little experimental work has directly tested how these processes jointly shape prejudice. Across two main-text experiments and one supplemental replication (N = 2710, United States), we tested whether hostility is greatest when cultural outgroups are portrayed as consuming meat that elicits both visceral (purity-related) disgust and moral concern. A pretest confirmed that dog meat evok

Disgust memory enhancement extends to more accurate memory but not more false memories.

People show enhanced memory recall for disgust over fear, despite both being highly negative and arousing emotions. But does disgust's 'stickiness' in memory result in more false memories for disgust versus fear? Existing research finds low false-memory rates for disgust and fear, perhaps from using image lures depicting content unrelated to target images. Therefore, we presented 111 participants with disgust, fear, (and neutral) images during an attention-monitoring task. After 24-48 hours, participants completed a recognition test, where they viewed 'old' (previously seen) and 'new' images (

Does heightened subjective sexual arousal lower pain in women if disgust is minimized?

It has been proposed that acute pain can generally be reduced by sexual activity. Increasing subjective sexual arousal might thus help reduce pain during sex. Yet, in conflict with the view that subjective sexual arousal would generally reduce pain, previous research has failed to find that presenting a sexually arousing film stimulus attenuates pain during a cold pressor test (CPT) in women. This might be due to the sexually arousing film having also elicited disgust. Therefore, this study tested whether subjective sexual arousal could generally reduce pain, provided that concurrently-elicite

Schizophrenia decreases guilt and increases self-disgust: Potential role of altered executive function.

Our knowledge of how the more complex self-conscious emotions (SCEs) are affected in schizophrenia is sparse. SCEs, unlike basic emotions, involve sophisticated frontal-lobe-related cognition, impairment of which characterizes the neurocognitive profile of schizophrenia. We investigated, in a cross-sectional study, whether SCEs (shame, guilt and self-disgust) are affected in schizophrenia, and the relationship between changes in SCEs and executive (dys)function. Twenty-nine Greek and thirty Arabic patients with schizophrenia were recruited alongside twenty-two Greek and thirty Arabic matched c

Disgust sensitivity mediates the link between homophobia and sexual orientation obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Previous research has shown that intrusive thoughts in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often focus on emotionally significant aspects of individuals' lives (e.g., values and beliefs). The current study sought to expand our understanding of OC symptoms related to sexual orientation (SO-OC symptoms) by investigating the roles of homophobia (i.e., negative attitudes, affect, and behaviors toward individuals with a same-gender orientation) and disgust propensity and sensitivity. A total of 592 self-identified heterosexual college students were recruited to complete measures of homophobia, disg

Involvement of fear, incompleteness, and disgust during symptoms of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Fear has been assigned a central role in models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but empirical investigations into the emotions that underpin OCD symptoms are few, especially in pediatric samples. Using validated, clinician-led structured interviews, 124 youth with OCD reported on the presence and severity of symptoms across the main symptom dimensions of OCD (aggressive, symmetry, contamination) and the degree to which fear, incompleteness, and disgust accompanied these symptoms. For comparison purposes, the degree of fear, incompleteness, and disgust during symptoms was obtained also

Prospective associations between disgust proneness and OCD symptoms: Specificity to excessive washing compulsions.

Although considerable evidence has linked disgust proneness (DP) to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), few studies have examined the extent to which DP predicts OCD symptoms over time. Further, it remains unclear if DP is a risk factor for the contamination subtype of OCD specifically or if it is prospectively associated with other OCD symptom subtypes. The present study sought to address these gaps in the literature with a large sample of unselected community participants (n = 497) that completed measures of DP and OCD symptoms monthly over a 6-month period. Latent growth analysis revealed

Disgust regulation between menstrual cycle phases: Differential effects of emotional suppression and reappraisal.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Immunosuppression is characteristic of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and is accompanied by an adaptive disgust response to reduce contact with pathogens. However, research has not examined the effects of emotion regulation on disgust during the menstrual cycle. Accordingly, the present study examines the effect of suppression and reappraisal on disgust during the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle. METHOD: Menstrual cycle phase was estimated in a sample of naturally cycling women (n = 73), and those in the follicular or luteal phase were as

Scary and nasty beasts: Self-reported fear and disgust of common phobic animals.

Animal phobias are one of the most prevalent mental disorders. We analysed how fear and disgust, two emotions involved in their onset and maintenance, are elicited by common phobic animals. In an online survey, the subjects rated 25 animal images according to elicited fear and disgust. Additionally, they completed four psychometrics, the Fear Survey Schedule II (FSS), Disgust Scale - Revised (DS-R), Snake Questionnaire (SNAQ), and Spider Questionnaire (SPQ). Based on a redundancy analysis, fear and disgust image ratings could be described by two axes, one reflecting a general negative percepti

Beyond disgust: impaired recognition of negative emotions prior to diagnosis in Huntington's disease.

Previous studies of emotion recognition suggest that detection of disgust relies on processing within the basal ganglia and insula. Research involving individuals with symptomatic and pre-diagnostic Huntington's disease (HD), a disease with known basal ganglia atrophy, has generally indicated a relative impairment in recognizing disgust. However, some data have suggested that recognition of other emotions (particularly fear and anger) may also be affected in HD, and a recent study found fear recognition deficits in the absence of other emotion-recognition impairments, including disgust. Parents Develop Long-Term Disgust Habituation, but Only After Beginning to Wean Their Children.

Disgust helps humans avoid potentially pathogenic substances such as bodily effluvia. This reduces illness risks and is difficult to overcome with cognitive strategies or through short-term habituation (minutes to hours). Whether long-term habituation (months to years) exists is an unsolved question. While regular professional exposure to disgust elicitors is associated with lower disgust sensitivity and avoidance, this could reflect selection and survivorship bias. We use the natural quasi-experiment of parenthood: it greatly increases exposure to bodily effluvia, but disgust does not usually

Normatively irrelevant disgust interferes with decision under uncertainty: Insights from the Iowa gambling task.

This study investigates whether a not informative, irrelevant emotional reaction of disgust interferes with decision-making under uncertainty. We manipulate the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) by associating a disgust-eliciting image with selections from Disadvantageous/Bad decks (Congruent condition) or Advantageous/Good decks (Incongruent condition). A Control condition without manipulations is also included. Results indicate an increased probability of selecting from a Good deck as the task unfolds in all conditions. However, this effect is modulated by the experimental manipulation. Specifically,

Changing disgust through imagery rescripting and cognitive reappraisal in contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder (C-OCD) is characterized by strongly experienced disgust and fear, in response to potentially contaminating stimuli. Both emotions differ in their susceptibility for change by habituation and extinction, which are important processes for the success of exposure therapy. Even though the response rates for exposure therapy for C-OCD are very good, it seems promising to test additional therapeutic techniques which target disgust more directly. Therefore, imagery rescripting and cognitive reappraisal were evaluated for their potential to change l
