Heterogeneity of gaming disorder: A clinically-based typology for developing personalized interventions.

BACKGROUND: The eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) defines the three key diagnostic criteria for gaming disorder (GD). These are loss of control over gaming, gaming as a priority over daily activities, and impaired functioning due to gaming. While this definition has implications for the prevention and treatment of GD, there is significant heterogeneity in the symptoms and etiology of GD among individuals, which results in different treatment needs. Cognitive control, emotional regulation, and reward sensitivity are three critical dimensions in the etiol

Efficacy and safety of clonidine for the treatment of impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease: a multicenter, parallel, randomised, double-blind, Phase 2b Clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are frequently encountered in Parkinson's disease (PD). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess whether clonidine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, would improve ICDs. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre trial in five movement disorder departments. Patients with PD and ICDs (n = 41) were enrolled in an 8-week, randomised (1:1), double-blind, placebo-controlled study of clonidine (75 μg twice a day). Randomisation and allocation to the trial group were carried out by a central computer system. The primary outcome was the change at 8 weeks in symptom sever

Risk factors of impulsive-compulsive behaviors in PD patients: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the reliable risk factors of impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients through a meta-analysis on studies in which PD-ICBs were diagnosed by clinical interview. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI and Wanfang databases were searched. We selected studies ensuring that diagnosis of ICBs in PD patients depends on semi-structured interviews according to the clinical diagnostic criteria of ICBs. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate quality of the included studies. The analyzed factors included demographic information, cl

Symptom severity and its clinical correlates in kleptomania.

BACKGROUND: Kleptomania (compulsive stealing) remains poorly understood, with limited data regarding its underlying pathophysiology and appropriate treatment choices. METHODS: Participants (N = 112) age 18 to 65 with a primary, current diagnosis of kleptomania were assessed for the severity of their stealing behavior and urges to steal, as well as related mental health symptoms. To identify clinical and demographic measures associated with variation in disease severity, we utilized the statistical technique of partial least squares. RESULTS: Greater kleptomania symptom severity was associate

Impulsivity.

Disorders characterized by impulsivity include disorders of impulse control (intermittent explosive disorder, pyromania, kleptomania, pathological gambling and trichotillomania), paraphilias, sexual impulsions and sexual addictions and impulsive aggression personality disorders (borderline, antisocial, histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders). Impulsivity has a substantial impact on both individuals and society. Impulse control disorders may be conceptualized as a subset of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. In this article, we examine the genetic and neurobiological aetiology of the

Buying-Shopping Disorder among Women: The Role of Vulnerability to Marketing, Buying Motives, Impulsivity, and Self-Esteem.

INTRODUCTION: The influence of marketing on addictive behaviours has been studied among tobacco and alcohol users. Although the fashion industry is highly influenced by marketing, research has poorly studied vulnerability to fashion marketing as a factor related to buying-shopping disorder (BSD) while considering psychological characteristics (buying motives, impulsivity, and self-esteem). OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present work is to investigate the relationship between vulnerability to marketing and BSD. METHODS: Women (n = 242) were exclusively recruited through social networking. Th

Zebrafish models of impulsivity and impulse control disorders.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by generalized difficulty controlling emotions and behaviors. ICDs are a broad group of the central nervous system (CNS) disorders including conduct disorder, intermittent explosive, oppositional-defiant disorder, antisocial personality disorder, kleptomania, pyromania and other illnesses. Although they all share a common feature (aberrant impulsivity), their pathobiology is complex and poorly understood. There are also currently no ICD-specific therapies to treat these illnesses. Animal models are a valuable tool for studying ICD pathobiology

The experiences of carers looking after people with Parkinson's disease who exhibit impulsive and compulsive behaviours: An exploratory qualitative study.

AIM: To understand the experiences of carers who were confronted by the development of impulsive and compulsive behaviours. BACKGROUND: Impulsive and compulsive behaviours (ICBs) are a serious complication in Parkinson's disease (PD) strongly associated with dopamine replacement therapy used to treat patients. These behaviours comprise abnormal activities such as pathological gambling, binge eating, compulsive shopping and hypersexuality. These behaviours place a considerable burden on patients and on their carers and families. DESIGN: An exploratory qualitative study. METHODS: Using a conv

Imaging impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease and their relationship to addiction.

Established substance addictions and impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling share similar underlying neurobiology, and recent data extends these commonalities to the risk factors that increase an individuals' susceptibility to develop such behaviours. In Parkinson's disease (PD), impulse control disorders (ICDs) are increasingly recognised to develop after patients begin dopamine (DA) restoration therapy, in particular DA agonists. In both the PD and non-PD population, more impulsive individuals are at increased risk for impulse control disorders. Here, we review the ne

Dopamine agonist serum concentrations and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common among Parkinson's disease patients using dopamine agonists. We wanted to determine whether ICD patients have higher dopamine agonist serum concentrations than those without any sign of ICD. METHODS: Patients who used either pramipexole or ropinirole depot once daily were screened for ICDs using the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale. Those who scored above the cut-off for one or more of the four defined ICDs (gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive shopping,

Preservation of brain metabolism in recently diagnosed Parkinson's impulse control disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICD) are a common and disrupting complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) treatment. Although their relationship with dopaminergic activity is well studied, their brain metabolic correlates are mostly unknown. METHODS: In this work we studied brain metabolism using brain 18F-FDG-PET. We performed a case-control study nested within a cohort of PD patients free of ICD at baseline to compare ICD patients right after ICD diagnosis and prior to any treatment modification with matched ICD-free patients. We also compared both PD groups with healthy controls. R

Intermittent explosive disorder as a disorder of impulsive aggression for DSM-5.

A disorder of impulsive aggression has been included in DSM since the first edition. In DSM-III, this disorder was codified as intermittent explosive disorder, and it was thought to be rare. However, the diagnostic criteria for the disorder were poorly operationalized, and empirical research was limited until research criteria were developed a decade ago. Subsequently, renewed interest in disorders of impulsive aggression led to a recent series of community-based studies that have documented intermittent explosive disorder to be as common as many other psychiatric disorders. Other recent resea

Impulsivity in mania.

Impulsivity, a breakdown in the balance between initiation and screening of action that leads to reactions to stimuli without adequate reflection or regard for consequences, is a core feature of bipolar disorder and is prominent in manic episodes. Catecholaminergic function is related to impulsivity and mania. Manic individuals have abnormal dopaminergic reactions to reward and abnormal responses in the ventral prefrontal cortex that are consistent with impulsive behavior. Impulsivity in mania is pervasive, encompassing deficits in attention and behavioral inhibition. Impulsivity is increased

Impulsivity in borderline personality disorder: a matter of disturbed impulse control or a facet of emotional dysregulation?

Impulsivity is regarded as a clinical, diagnostic and pathophysiological hallmark of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Self-report measures of impulsivity consistently support the notion of higher impulsive traits in BPD patients as compared to healthy control subjects. Laboratory tests of impulsivity, i.e. neuropsychological tests of impulse control render weak and inconsistent results both across different cognitive components of impulse control and within the same cognitive component of impulse control. One important factor worsening impulsive behaviors and impulse control deficits in

The relationship between Impulse Control Disorders and cognitive dysfunctions in Parkinson's Disease: A meta-analysis.

Impulse Control Disorders (ICD) are associated with impairment in cognitive flexibility and cortical inhibition. In Parkinson's Disease (PD) the relationship between ICD and cognitive dysfunctions is still unclear: some studies found different cognitive profiles between Parkinsonians with and without ICD, whereas others did not. Moreover, findings from studies on ICD in PD are conflicting on which cognitive function is altered. A meta-analysis of 34 studies was performed to shed light on relationship between ICD and cognitive dysfunctions and to reveal the cognitive function compromised in Par
